I think Quizilla just wasn’t very profitable. Like many sites, it started without a clear and viable business model that could support it as it grew large. Tumblr and many other sites have had similar issues.
I remember when it was announced that it was closing, and a whole generation of fandom was somewhere between “Oh no, my childhood!” and “Thank god my shame will be hidden forever!” Meanwhile, us LJ types were like “What’s a quizilla???” Heh.
i’ve had this sitting in my likes for days because i’ve been waiting for myself to get enough energy and free time to reply to this
quizilla was, if anything, the worst place you could possibly do fanfiction on at first. it was a site made for quizzes, by a single dude. the fics were written in the ‘question’ part of the quiz, which meant no paragraphs. the fics were usually a wall of text. some people used several ‘questions’ to cut up the fics into several parts.
and we drank it all up and accepted it and loved it, because for most of us, this was THE first place we had ever encountered fanfics, and we were like 11-14yo. we didn’t know that there was other alternatives, that we didn’t have to write it all in bigass chunks.
it wasn’t until later updates we actually got an update specifically to implement fanfics to the site, because the creators knew that’s what we used the site for, and all was well in the world. fics were at this point created en masse. you could now also code your fics, so they all had their own unique look! queue most Big fics (and all authors who wished to stand out) ending up looking like…… most geocities pages?
(and it was so fucking fun to do it. look, gif backgrounds, animated cursors, midi my chemical romance music? that was the shit back then. like, sure, it was hard as hell to read anything, but that wasn’t important. also you ended up feeling so cool as well, you figured out coding)
until 2006, when MTV/Teen Nick bought the site. and they wanted to fix the place, turn it into a proper place for proper quizzes, school related stuff, you know, clean stuff. but they couldn’t just… remove fics, because they knew that it’d nuke the site.
so they did a Purge.
All fics now looked the same, they removed the entire coding aspect. The site got a completely new layout and all, and everything now looked the same. And p much all fics were now gone, bc they said that they were only gonna remove Explicit stuff (which is, if anything, a nail in the coffin for ANY fanfic/fancontent site), which already pissed off many users.
but they also removed a lot of slash stuff. which means they changed out their hammer and nails into a nailgun and decided to just staple the entire coffin shut at mach speed. (around this point i also ditched the place, I think i ended up on uhhh…….. fanfiction.net and dA?)
2014 they admitted that there wasn’t a lot of traffic anymore on the site (man, wonder why), and shut the page down.
so yeah, op is correct: While it had a goal in the start (’Start A Quiz Site’), the direction it went in was not expected, and TeenNick buying the place in an attempt to turn it back onto its original purpose absolutely killed the site, because people who already knew of Quizilla knew it as ‘where young teens go to write weird self insert porn fics’, people ON Quizilla left because the site didn’t want us anymore, or people had never heard of it and other alternatives were available.
granted, Quizilla would have died from under its own weight in the end anyway. The original owner selling off the site was already a clear sign of it, TeenNick buying the site just added 8 years to the sites life.
Thanks for linking me to this post. I found the site around 2006-2007 when I was barely even a preteen. I read my first Sasuke x Naruto lemon on there (because we had to call them lemons…people were very inventive about skirting the restrictions and often used the quiz format hide to the real explicit stuff because the “answer” didn’t really have a word limit and could act as the body of the fic itself. And also while the site was primarily used by preteens and teens (of which I was included at the time) there was still a fair share of older members who stuck around from before it was bought (there were profiles you could share basic information with readers and give a bio and some of them I remember were older. I suspect a lot of the members who stayed after the purge where primarily fanfic writers and not anyone posting original work since most of the content did end up being fanfic of one sort or another). While there was probably a lot of restrictions on what sort of content was allowed…no one really gave a fuck and just did whatever they wanted as long as the title and description of a fic didn’t give anything away. There really wasn’t a sense of being reported if no one who actually read your cringy tween fic was going to report you and they likely weren’t because they were also cringy tweens. I used the site for years and let me tell you. Try as they might, they couldn’t scrub it clean. There was a lot of NSFW and dark content. Think a bunch of edgy kids who all watch a lot of anime are going to do if stuffed into a room together with no other after school pastime other than to come up with stories. And then you have Quizilla post 2006. And I have a feeling that, aside from the business model not generating enough money, the fact they couldn’t wrangle a bunch of middle and high schoolers to stop writing cursed smutfic had a thing or two to do with the site shutting down for good.
My memory isn’t the best but trust me. Just trust me when I say it was everywhere and it was even more of a forbidden fruit since the site had “officially banned it”.

Aside from not being able to code fics to look however you wanted it was actually pretty neat and could’ve been pretty cool if it hadn’t been bought and turned into a “site for kids” because there really isn’t any other place I’ve seen where you can post quizzes and fics at the same time. Because while limited in some ways there are some unique things you can do with the quiz format. You could basically write text based adventure games of a sort without having to use a separate application or download anything and no one had to leave the site they also did other stuff on to do it. And there were different categories for poetry, lyrics, etc. It was probably originally intended for original works but fanfic ended up being what most people used it for, at least post the purge. You could use the quizzes to poll your readers on what they thought about, say, what you should write next. You could use the quizzes to fashion your own sort of “choose your own adventure” stories or just give different endings to a story without the “go to chapter xx for y” that’d you have to do otherwise. I don’t remember if there was a messaging system but I do believe you could comment and there was also a rating system. But to be sure I’d have to do some real digging to find the exacts of how or if users interacted with each other. My actual recollection of the quality of writing to be found there is vague because I was in middle school and some of high school when I last used the site and now it’s lost to history. But I can say I did have a lot of fun there. Granted I didn’t have anything else to compare it to but I was a lonely kid, it was post my parents divorce, my older sisters wanted nothing to do with me, and I lived far enough away from the school I attended that no one I knew lived close enough to play with after class…so I wasn’t complaining.
Generally there wasn’t a feel of doom that the site was closing in the future because anyone who could’ve warned for that had left already and gone on to other things. And then after it did warn about closing down or a lot of the user base went to places like DeviantART. I know I did and I wrote on there for a short while before I found sites like Ao3 and have stuck there since. I don’t use DeviantART anymore at all. I hate DA for fanfic and the atmosphere there kind of sucks though I did like the fact that having your own page and journal was a great way to communicate with your audience and keep them up to date.
I’d also like to point out that…there was no rating system at all. No warning system. No tagging system. You got whatever the author cared to put in the description and that was it. And let me say that’s one thing I don’t miss.
Hahaha. Yeah, “What are warnings????” was a feature of so much of fandom in the past. AO3 looks how it does because it came after both FFN and what some of us call the “archive era” when it seemed like every fandom had its own little eFiction archive.
A lot of the AO3 design is a reaction to those spaces and to liking LJ culture but not how hard it was to find all the chapters of a fic.
I’m not surprised people weren’t thinking in terms of site closure: that tends to be something you see with not just older users but people who’ve been through a few site closures or mass migrations of fandom.
Starting to see a pattern of people killing a site that’s popular with fandom by trying to increase its mass appeal by making it more kid / family friendly and alienating/driving away its original user base in the process.
I’m not gonna lie, I was getting really confused about the dates, because I wasn’t even allowed on the internet until 2008, but I distinctly recalled a really big shitfest towards the summer of that year. Based on fanlore digging, turns out there were multiple community-rocking incidents at Quizilla; it just so happened I witnessed one that wasn’t a part of this discussion.
When I joined, there were still a lot of fics that liked being as custom-looking as possible, with (often poorly edited) fanfic banners and the occasional song coded into the fics, and there were definitely a bunch of lemons that often hid in the answer/results portions of quizzes. (At some point, they even added the ability to organize all of your separate fic posts into chapters, but I don’t recall if that was pre-mass emigration or not.) What really made me wanna learn HTML on that site, though, was so that I could customize my Quizilla account’s homepage. Make me look like a cool user with one, you know?
But then one day we all woke up to the entire website completely changing its entire layout to a pretty drastic degree - and they had removed all of our homepages. Needless to say (coupled with the fact that they apparently also erased Quizilla’s original mascot), a lot of us were very unhappy. After a lot of screaming and shouting in official Quizilla staff journal posts, a lot of us just had enough and started leaving the site in droves over the course of the summer. I personally ended up on FanFiction.Net because a bunch of my favorite authors decided to move there. (And because I, for the life of me, couldn’t make heads or tails on how LiveJournal worked in order to follow some of my other favorites that chose that instead. Wouldn’t figure that shit out till Inception came around.)
So. Yeah. When the whole NSFW purge last year kicked off, I was a tired, spiteful soul sipping my tea over the Quizilla memories it was all kicking up, just thinking “Ah, yes - time for the new generation to know fear.”
