So I had a thought

my guess is somewhere in the middle. gordon "dies" (likely at the citadel explosion) and that provides an ideal separation condition because now the player has to stay off the game so gordon doesn't come back to life and the AIs can have in-universe closure and not worry about where their friend has disappeared to/if he abandoned them (again)/if he's coming back.

Gordon's death would also provide a reason as to why the series can't continue. We as the audience know it's because hl3 will never happen, but in-universe it's because the protagonist is dead, so there's no one to drive any sort of plot.

Of COURSE there is no canon precedence to this let alone ANY canon evidence for the way he was during this time. But the way I think of it

I like the idea that he was MUCH more naive and inexperienced during this time.

And just like he takes on extra duties for Tenna in the current day, maybe back then he was more excited to have such a "high" position. Like he was eager to become his second-in-command, and to be the best at his job he could be

And because he didn't have as much life experience yet, he was a lot more optimistic about it (And it probably got to his head a bit. I like to think he has a bit of a "Not Like The Other Girls" (/genderneutral) complex towards the Pippins. He's *not* like those trite other guys who spend all day playing games and making bets. He's SMART. He's CAPABLE. And obviously the King RECOGNISES that. He's not LIKE them)

But this is where like.

Okay for context when I say "ship" I do NOT mean this in the "I hope they're happy and work out!!" way. I think / want this to be an awful time that influences who he is as a character and also makes you look at him with big sad puppy eyes and want to pick him up and comfort him because it makes you go Oh I am so sorry you went through this

I think that the Green Pippins LOVES this position. He LOVES the way it makes him feel better than everyone else but all this serves to actually do is make him more isolated from the rest of his kind. He wouldn't have ANYONE else to lean on. No community to want whats best for him. Just him and the King who does not see him with the same degree of significance- who truly just sees him as a pawn and some*thing* to make his life easier and amuse him

Which would be heartbreaking 🥺 Like the King would be his whole world but to the king he's just a tool but he's too rose-tinted glasses to recognise that fact at all. He thinks the Diamond King sees him highly too......

I was going to make a comment about Green Pippins being in love with him but I think it would be more / different from that. Like there's love (romantic) (wanting to appreciate and be there for someone in a respectful way) and then there is sheer codependence (could call it love but its not healthy) (I need "you," "you" are all I have, I am nothing without "you")

Maybe he'd realise how much he was being taken advantage of after moving to TV World. And the idea of him getting out of that situation... Just to put himself right back INTO it with Tenna. Making himself the ultimate right-hand-man once again. Having left that life behind but not being able to cope with the absence of that constant validation, that authority figure telling him "You're not like the rest. You're better than all of them, you're special." Even if that isn't a healthy attitude for him. EVEN IF HE KNOWS IT BUT STILL CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT. And what is the position of Mike if not the ULTIMATE temptation in that regard. Not only being different and special, but also said authority figures BEST, MOST TRUSTED FRIEND?? The things that could DO to a guys ego!!!

And so you've got this added motivation towards his relationship with Tenna where he's becoming victim to the way he was taught to navigate the world once again. BUT THEN. BUT THENNNN

THE OTHERS EVENTUALLY JOIN HIM IN BEING MIKE!! JONGLER AND PLUEY JOIN THE TEAM!!! AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS??

FINALLY, HE'S FOUND HIS WAY BACK TO HAVING FRIENDS AGAIN. TO HAVING COMMUNITY. SOME GUYS WHO HAVE HIS BACK!!! EVEN IF HE DOESN'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO DO THIS FRIENDSHIP THING ANYMORE, HE STILL GETS TO TAKE PART IN IT!!!

Wavewave strikes me as a couple who would have separate habsuites, but not because of a hidden or strained relationship or anything, but just because to them it’s the most logical set up. They each have their habsuite, their space, with very detailed rules about when the other can and cannot enter. They can coexist in one habsuite if they want, sometimes even living in just one for several days at a time, but they’re not obligated to be sharing space constantly.

hard agree. they're both incredibly private and even secretive people, but instead of that personality trait/preference causing problems in the relationship, they both get it. understand it completely.
