What if every choice you made in a long string of terrible choices was the Wrong One?

Even if he went back, even if he said where the Beacon was, even then. Nothing would change! He would still lose his mother and his chance at research and on top of that he would likely be arrested for treason! He saw his own execution in the Beacon, he knows where this ends. So he lies and lies and lies because what does he have to lose? He's caught between Trent and losing everything, so he has to charge forward.
