Not queerbait: A cookbook has no soup recipes. You assumed there would be some based on vibes and wishful thinking. No soups were ever advertised or promised.

Also not queerbait: A cookbook that was advertised as containing soup recipes has soup recipes but not for the types of soups you like.

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.

Its also notable that people are warned and opt in to those kind of things. The rough stuff is there and easy to find if you're into that, but if you're not, its also easy to avoid. I don't think I've ever read surprise horrific violence unless I missed a tag. Ao3 has the best filters I've ever seen, and users are generally good at tagging their shit, which is necessary or the whole system breaks down. Ao3 is amazing.

The funniest thing about this is how prevalent tumblr posts are on other platforms. I see them on instagram like every time I go on there. Honestly, Tumblr is the only social media I can stand for more than a few minutes because it's quiet, the tags are chronological, and no one is making money here. Beautiful!

If you haven't unexpectedly played caregiver to someone you love, I can see where Mel comes off as maybe unsympathetic. Don't get me wrong, she is wrong here, but its from years of repression, which you have to do while you solo caretake. And all advice to caregivers is always like 'Never be angry. Always put their feelings and comfort first. Adjust your behavior to their wants and needs. But also take care of yourself (with no advice on how to find time/money to do that when you're repressing your every thought and feeling to better serve the person you caretake. (Which you sometimes fail at like Mel did here.))' Basically to solo caretake someone you have to ignore your own needs, which builds resentment and poor mental health. That is what Mel is probably dealing with hence 'I have seen Elf 164 times' and why Danas advice is the opposite of helpful. Mel might be feeling sorry for herself but, its because she's grieving the loss of who she might have been. And she doesn't fulltime caretake anymore so maybe now that could change, but she has no idea how to be her own person anymore. She only knows how to be there for Becca and suddenly Becca doesn't want her there. I don't think its a coincidence that caretaker Mel went into the health field. Its the only thing she knows she can do. What Mel needs is a therapist to listen to her and help find herself as an adult outside of being a caretaker.

I will never get over Blitz calling Inge 'delusional'. Like what is he even talking about? Did she say Hearth could save his dad, or that the bracelet would protect him, or is Blitz just upset because she gave his elf an accessory that doesn't match his scarf? We'll never know for sure. It really reads like Blitz is jealous as hell though. Blitz literally fires this shot at a character who has never been anything but perfectly nice to everyone and then never explains the critisism. There are many scenes that could indicate Blitzstone cannon, but that one feels especially egregious.

I have a really hard time reconciling the book 1 version of Rune and Brand's relationship to the Tower with they way that he's portrayed at the end of book 3. Like in the first book Rune is legitimately frightened of him sometimes, mostly for Brand's sake. I just...I'm always wondering if KD Edwards changed the direction of the character, just didn't spend quite enough time developing the Tower for my satisfaction (hard to come back from whipping a teenager in my book), or if that discrepancy between the Towers (The Tower who refers to Brand as a sheild and then swears to protect him only for Rune's sake and the Tower who fondly includes Brand as one of his children) is actually plot relevant. I think there's an argument for all three explanations, but god do I want it to be plot relevant. I'm dying to find out which it is.

That’s not problem solving. It’s barely catharsis, in practice. It doesn’t just create more problems than it solves, it destroys more solutions than it creates.

Put the apocalypse down, and back away slowly.

Real solutions to complex, systemic problems are not so easily reduced to “us good, them evil; kill them.”

Personally, I think the secret to the magicians (S1-4) is that the pathetic main character is actually pathetic. He's not secretly powerful or chosen or given a level up through a training montage. He just cares so, so fucking much about everything and everyone that he becomes the main character. And the way that he cares is not ideal. It's painful and selfish. Its so painful and selfish that it feels real in a way that few other shows can truly master because their main character must be 'good' and a stand in for the general audience. (Which is why killing him was not some subversive win for the underdog like the writers toted. Like...killing Ned Stark was subversive. Quentin's existance is already fucking subversive. Him choosing Eliot over Alice would have been fucking subversive. Alice getting a plotline/personality outside of Quentin would have been fucking subversive (that scene in season 4 where she talks to herself is soooo good. Why would more of that depth require Q's death?)) Killing Q just took away a vital aspect of what made the Magicians special and added nothing.

So...the raven boys graphic novel I think works as an interesting suppliment to the actual novel, but it doesn't have the same dreamy quality.

To me, the Raven cycle should feel like a long, meandering walk in the woods. Like... it's nice, and you feel like you can finally breathe. Sometimes you hear rustling noises, but you don't see anything. It's beautiful and you stop to look around every few minutes. Are you being followed? No, just a squirell. The path starts going sharply downhill. You can't remember if the trail is an in-and-out or a loop or how long it's supposed to be. You can't tell if you're near the end, but you're still going down so at some point you will have to go up. You're not sure what direction you're headed anymore. The trees are getting taller and farther apart. You're walking toward something, but you never quite reach it. The trail never goes back up. Suddenly, you're back at your car and no time has passed, but your clothes are soaked through and you're starving.

The books make you feel what the gang is feeling because you're in their heads. The graphic novel does not. To borrow a beautiful phrase, it is less of itself out loud.

Choreman is hilarious because it is completely unintentional, but it still works so well. Like Chase grew up rich, socially abandoned, and people pleases as a coping mechanism. Foreman grew up poor, had good parents, and learned defiance as a coping mechanism. They don't like each other because they both think the other is too much like House. Neither feels like they have a true home. Neither can escape House's orbit. Neither really wants to. Foreman literally swears that he will never like Chase. They hang out outside of work. They take House to karaoke together. They seek each other's advice over and over. They give each other brutally honest opinions tinged with fondness. They become family. And in the end, they are all that's left.

The vibe has shifted. Lines hit a little harder. Ot3 is a little more obvious. Season 3 has been great so far! Seasons 1 and 2 were pretty good, but they were missing something, and that something was John Rogers.

With all this talk of outie Mark not seeing innie Mark as a person, I think it's worth remembering that this isn't just a problem with Outie Mark. Innie Mark betrayed his new team of innies in the first episode of this season. He refused to work with them, and they were effectively killed (as mentioned by Dylan and proven by the old man Mark yelling on Lumon's steps). It's not that Mark S cares about all innies and their sanctity of life as people. He mostly cares about him and his friends. Just look at his behavior at Irv's funeral, where he literally says, 'he isn't dead, he's just not here', implying that Irving's innie and outie are the same person. (Although that line is post the start of his reintegration) Mark S's own consideration of innies as people is inconsistant at best and Outie and innie Mark both exhibit this same selfish blindness just at different points in the story.
