THE TRAGEDY OF VALERIE SOLANAS
In 1968, Valerie Solanas attempted to assassinate Andy Warhol for stealing her play, (which really happened). This act of violence made her famous to promote her radical feminist diatribe: The S.C.U.M. Manifesto, designed to crush the monstrous patriarchy.
Abused as a child, later becoming homeless, Solanas supported herself through begging and prostitution, writing her SCUM Manifesto in 1967, shooting Andy Warhol in 1968 (he perished 19 years later of gallbladder damage from chronic amphetamine use), she then spent a few years in psychiatric institutions, editing & writing for the Majority Report magazine, and getting a few notorious letters and interviews into Hustler, High Times, and The Village Voice, before dying of pneumonia at age fifty-two, destitute and alone in a hospice.
Her long term legacy is the resulting effect of the Manifesto upon society which led to an upheaval of the Feminist Movement and resulted in the National Organization for Women (NOW) splitting into two camps and birthing 2ND Wave Feminism, or Radical Feminism. Which was more inclusive of Gay Lesbian and Minority Representation in the Feminist Movement.

By recounting the story of this gifted yet borderline woman, Thea Rojzman reveals how Valerie Solanas was forged—from the repeated abuse she suffered at the hands of her father, through her life on the streets and the necessity of turning to prostitution, to her encounters with the figures of 1960s New York pop culture.
