I cannot stand the homophobic.
Imho [in my humble opinion] the very worst type of discrimination
not because racism or sexism or discrimination based on religion is all sunshine and ponies and rainbows,
but because of the way our society perceives discrimination.
Politically speaking, racism and sexism are battles very nearly won in favor of the side supporting equality. Yes, there are
thinking women belong in the kitchen.
Yes, i've heard a ton of "go make me a sandwich" comments from boys, and even from the foolish - foolish girls who think nothing of perpetuating this sexism, however innocent it seems from its shrouds of intended humor -
yes, the races are misrepresented in the media -
and the KKK still exists, and every place where humanity flourishes seems to have some problem, extent or subtle, with xenophobia-
But in america, to blatantly say you think a certain gender or race/ethnicity is disgusting, is not accepted by citizens as a whole.
for some reason, saying "i'm not being discriminatory or anything [wtf? this confuses me every time - you can't negate a hateful comment by verbally denying it first] but i think it's wrong to be gay", and using your religion / conservative background as your reason, is.
you say homosexuality is a biblical sin.
you realize the bible condones stoning of non-virgins at marriage, absolutely forbids the eating of shrimp and pork and most kinds of poultry, and - here's the best one - specific guidelines on HOW TO TREAT SLAVES.
if such guidelines existed - follow the logic - surely God's chosen people had slaves. meaning it was condoned.
there are people who'll tell you even these rules were advanced and liberal for their time period and that we've adjusted them to the modern day. where there is no slavery.
does it not also make sense to carry this rule to homophobia? that maybe - just maybe - the old testament, at its ripe old age of several thousand years, is outdated? that maybe, it shouldn't be used as a justification for blatant discrimination?
don't you tell me i don't know what i'm talking about,
i love God our Father, i have read my bible cover to cover multiple times, i was raised a christian.
i dare you to find the verses that contradict what i said.
and it's the little things that keep homophobia going, really. especially in the modern day. you find homophobia more in the way people treat you differently, as though they think you're made of delicate china and going to break if touched - or how people laugh a little too loudly at the things you say, in the hopes that you won't get the wrong idea that they're biased against you or something insane like that - or how your own parents pray for you, fervently believing God will magically touch you and turn you "right" - or how apparently everyone believes heterosexuality is the norm, and to be gay, bisexual, transgender, or anything other than 'straight' is not. this is false. the majority of us are bisexual, but closeted because we ourselves say, repeat and eventually soak in and believe that finding our own sex beautiful is wrong and twisted.
assume "oh, s/he's gay & biased"
and thus dismiss my opinion.
my sexuality is completely irrelevant. i will tell you that i mostly like boys, but since you don't know who the effing hell i am, or which gender i belong to, that won't make a difference.
to reference the other types of discrimination once more: should a girl's opinion on the feminist movement be ignored, simply because she is biased towards that moment? should a victim of discrimination not be taken seriously on the grounds that s/he is biased?
homophobia should be classed with the likes of other, almost exclusively unaccepted types of discrimination.
i don't f***ing understand why human rights is even an issue.
WE LIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
NOT EXACTLY A PRIMITIVE AGE.
note- MY APOLOGIES for any errors made in this post.
i am recovering from a headache, and just drank about half of the earth's drinkable water and way too much coffee to try to remedy it, and am about to die of stress, so forgive me please.
