EVERY single staff member in that hospital thought they were married
the concept of mulder, an atheist, reverently kissing scully on the forehead and then on both sides of her face in a manner that depicts the sign of the cross is just a little too insane for me.
So far my favorite thing about the X-Files is that they stablish pretty early on that Mulder will break into, trespass or infiltrate government-adjacent and military facilities, he will get caught doing it, and then Scully will have to go and get him like "yes, he did something illegal, but he's just a silly little guy" as if Mulder's her annoying-but-harmless dog who got into someone's trash and not a grown ass man trying to expose government secrets.
And at first, both the viewer and said government agents who caught Mulder sneaking around will be under the impression that Scully is the reasonable, levelheaded rule-follower in this dynamic, but the show is quick to point out that if someone does refuse to hand Mulder back she is more than willing to highjack a car and hold another officer at gunpoint in a hostage situation, she would just prefer to ask politely and avoid the hassle.

Timekeeping in the Voltron Universe
This post is a guide of all the information that I’ve discovered or calculated over the course of writing my various analysis posts about the VLD story on how the intergalactic timekeeping units that are used throughout the series compare to those of Earth. I've been putting this together for a while as a resource for me and anyone else who intends to write VLD fics so that those who plan on incorporating the differences in time measurements into their stories can have a baseline to build off of.
(I'm aware that others in the fandom have made similar posts, but I haven't seen any that have done the math on some of the time comparisons)
Ticks
Ticks are established early in the show as the equivalent of seconds, and the Let’s Voltron podcast actually timed the team’s little ticks vs seconds comparison from S1E06 Taking Flight and found that a tick is 1.399 seconds.
Dobashes
Dobashes are the equivalent of minutes. How many ticks there are in one dobash is not something than any official sources have provided any indication of.
Vargas
Vargas are the equivalent of hours, and S3E03 The Hunted implies that they are very close in length. When the paladins are pursuing Lotor’s ship at the start of the episode, Pidge says “At our current rate of speed, we’ll be in attack range in an hour.” When we cut to Lotor’s ship barely a minute later, Acxa says “the lions will be on us in one Varga.”
While the number of dobashes in one varga is unknown, it at least gives us an indication that the amount of time elapsed is still about sixty minutes in Earth time.
Quintants
Quintants are the equivalent of days, and the show actually tells us how many Vargas are in one day. In S2E08 The Blade of Marmora, the path to the Blade of Marmora’s base is said to close for two Quintants once Keith and Shiro reach it. When we cut back to the Castle of Lions in the middle of Keith’s trials, it’s been “roughly ten Vargas” according to Coran, and when Allura asks how much longer they have to wait, Lance correctly estimates “thirty more Vargas.”
This means that 2 Quintants is the equivalent of 40 Vargas, meaning that one Quintant is 20 Vargas long.
In Earth time, this means that a Quintant is only about 20 hours compared to the 24-hour days of Earth. Dividing 20 by 24 to find the percentage establishes that 1 Quintant = 0.833 Days
Movements
Movements are the equivalent of weeks, and while it’s never explicitly confirmed, Coran’s mention of the paladins forming Voltron “six times a movement” in S1E02 Some Assembly Required implies that there are 6 Quintants in a Movement.
Since Quintants are only 20 hours, six of them would be the equivalent of five 24-hour Earth days.
Phoebs and Deca-Phoebs
Phoebs are the equivalent of months and Deca-Phoebs are the equivalent of years. The Deca indicates that there are 10 Phoebs in a year, and I actually managed to figure out the comparison to Earth years while crafting my second VLD timeline guide.
When Shiro and Allura are detected during their infiltration of a Galra cruiser in S1E10 Collection and Extraction, the computer identifies Shiro as “Fugitive prisoner 117-9875.”
The format of his prisoner ID number indicates the year on the empire’s calendar that Shiro was captured, meaning that the Galran calendar places the beginning of Season 1 in imperial year 9876, since the discovery of Voltron occurs a year after Shiro’s capture.
Initially, I thought this meant that the references to Altea being destroyed “10,000 years ago” were a generalization and that it wasn’t exactly 10,000 years.
However, Coran’s insistence on correcting Hunk that the Castle of Lions is 10,600 years old in S1E01 indicates that it was indeed exactly 10,000 years between Altea’s destruction and the return of the Blue Lion.
So, dividing 10,000 by 9876 to compare gives me the math of 1 Deca-Phoeb = 0.9876 Years.
Since 1 year on Earth is 365 days, 365 times 0.9876 gives me 360 days in a sincle Deca-Phoeb.
And since there are 10 Phoebs in a Deca-Phoeb, 360 divided by 10 gives us approximately 36 days in 1 Phoeb. Since 1 Quintant is 0.833 days, 1 day is the equivalent of 1.2 Quintants. 1.2 times 36 gives me approximately 43 Quintants in a Phoeb.
This means that there are a total of 7 full Movements (or 5 7-day Earth weeks) in a Phoeb with one extra Quintant at the end, and 1 Deca-Phoeb is approximately 430 Quintants.
Final Time Comparison Chart
1 Tick = 1.399 Seconds
1 Varga = 1 Hour
1 Quintant = 20 Vargas = 20 Hours = 0.833 Days
1 Movement = 6 Quintants = 5 Days
1 Phoeb = 43 Quintants = 7.167 Movements = 36 Days = 5.14 Weeks
1 DecaPhoeb = 430 Quintants = 71.67 Movements = 360 days = 51.4 Weeks
Just realized I did the math wrong for the years to Deca-Phoebs comparisons, so I went ahead and corrected it.
An Updated Guide to the Timeline of VLD
Last Edit: 04/04/2026
After reviewing my timeline notes in more detail, I decided I wasn’t happy with editing my original VLD timeline guide, but I didn’t want to just delete the earlier meta outright. So I decided to start over and make a brand new meta that reflected my current research notes without me having to constantly go back and edit the old one every time I realized I had missed something.
And boy am I glad I did because in the process I noticed details that I completely overlooked when I made the last timeline guide that trying to edit the original post would’ve led to redoing the whole thing anyway.
So now I present to you my most complete and up-to-date notes on the timeline of Voltron Legendary Defender as of April 2023. Under the cut because this is going to get long.
Updated the timeline notes again and ended up doing a major overhaul of pretty much everything past Season 1. Had a bit of a 🤯moment over the things I figured out and lost sleep over it a few nights, but it was worth it to get everything up to date.
*Note: contains Rivals & Polo book spoilers !!*
I’ve been desperate for more Taggie x Rupert so I decided to read Polo (the next book in the series after Rivals) and I'm so thrilled that we get to see them happy together – so I thought I'd share some quotes where Rupert is absolutely in love with and devoted to her.
... and sharing a bonus quote, featuring Taggie being equally in love with Rupert (we get very little of her perspective in this book, but I thought this was sweet):
Girl really needs to hear that but the thing is - if it's not her, it's nobody in that madcap household full of impractical genius dramatic types.
Honestly, the age gap thing makes so much sense. She doesn't have daddy issues per se, she just has overall parent issues ie her parents basically don't parent at all and she's the one who has to be the grown up. Now yes, she's 20. But her parents are in their 40s and the hosts and yet they hared off to bang or w/e leaving her to deal with the whole insane party. And you get the sense it's been like this forever.
The thing is, it totally makes sense for her to end up with Rupert - like she's a caretaker by nature but with him it's (1) one person (2) who actually appreciates her domestic goddess routine instead of taking it for granted and viewing her as dim (3) unlike her fam won't leave her utterly alone 100% of the time to cope with 100% of the stuff. Like seriously - her sister is a minor but neither her brother nor her parents do anything to clean up, it's the freaking neighbor who helps wtf.
Probably the first time Rupert tucked a pretty woman into bed without climbing in after, in years.
At least someone appreciated it.
PS That was very kind of him (and largely because Taggie was distraught over the pics) but also hilarious.
(It's kinda telling that while Taggie ends up with someone close to her father's age, he is unlike daddy, eminently practical in real life matters.)
*Note: contains Rivals (book and show) spoilers!*
Ok, I lied – here's one more round-up of my favorite quotes now that I've finished reading Rivals, featuring: Gertrude helping Taggie and Rupert fall in love (alternatively titled: Rupert realizing both Taggie and Gertrude are actual angels)! <3
This was inspired by @rosehathawhey's post showing Rupert warming up to and falling in love with Gertrude in season 1, and also by @mckittenpants's analysis on that post noting that Rupert showing his fondness and affection for Gertrude is a (more acceptable) way of showing how he really feels about Taggie. 😭
I'm re-reading Rivals and keep finding Taggie x Rupert parallels I missed the first time – like, they just want to take care of each other !!
Taggie's the primary breadwinner after Declan leaves Corinium (Declan, Maud, and Caitlin all borrow money from her at various points throughout the book), and I forgot how many times Rupert is the only person worried about her working too much and steps in to help financially (first two quotes show they both fund Venturer's alcohol, third quote is just a bonus).
This comparison (between his ex wife and his next wife) killed me. Rupert will listen to Taggie talk about literally anything and he'll never, ever get bored 🥺
I feel like these next two quotes are such a clear example of how they change each other for the better – Rupert makes Taggie stronger, while Taggie makes Rupert softer (and I'm insane just thinking about it!).
These last two quotes aren't really parallels, but I'm kind of hoping they're in the next season because we need Rupert riding across the fields toward Taggie at dawn à la Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Rupert and Taggie steaming up a car à la Titanic (1997).
I know the Rivals screenwriters have already made a lot of changes to the season 1 storyline, but now that I've read the book I'm secretly hoping they include a few specific scenes in season 2! Here are the 6 book scenes I want the writers to consider for next season:
1. As a follow-up to Taggie's dream sequence in season 1, Rupert dreams of her in season 2.
2. Taggie dances with Bas to get Rupert’s attention and he shatters a wineglass in his hand while watching them.
3. Delcan and Maud forget Taggie's birthday, so Rupert swoops in to take care of her (and, you know, be a better caregiver than her actual parents).
4. Rupert reads Taggie's horoscope compulsively (this is niche, but I just want evidence of him pining, down bad, obsessed, etc).
5. More Yearning! Rupert yearns for Taggie literally whenever he's away from her (she does the same, but I want to see him to suffer a little).
6. Taggie and Rupert confess their love – hopefully many times (please, I just want them happy together).
Regardless of whether or not they stay true to the book, I'm stoked for season 2 (and, honestly, I love all the changes they made in season 1 to "modernize" the source material, especially to Taggie's character).
