A Brief Intro to WDW’s Blizzard Beach
Walt Disney World’s Blizzard Beach opened in 1995, and at 64 acres is Disney’s largest water park to date.
The back-story for Blizzard Beach is that a freak snow storm hit WDW, and a ski resort was built. When the Florida sun melted all the snow, WDW was left with a worthless attraction – until they spotted an alligator surfing down a dry snow slope. And just like that, Blizzard Beach was born!
One of the ‘ski resort’ elements that still remains is a chair lift which takes guests from the beach to the top of Mount Gushmore. Mount Gushmore is easily the most iconic element of Blizzard Beach. It is 90 feet tall, and one of the highest points in Florida. Mount Gushmore hosts several water slides, but the most popular is Summit Plummet. Summit Plummet is one of the highest water rides in the world. It measures 120 feet, and attains speeds of more than 55 mph.
Blizzard Beach also has a 3000 foot long lazy river. One of the unique themeing elements for this ride is the ‘melting snow’ that drips on you as you meander slowly through its many twists and turns and tunnels.
It’s been two decades since Blizzard Beach first opened, and it still attracts nearly 2 million visitors a year. That’s one successful ‘failed ski resort’!
