Movies released this year that I enjoyed🫶🏻
Key word here is enjoyed! I may or may not think each one is the best movie ever in every single aspect, but enough of the themes/artistry/etc. spoke to me that in my humble opinion they’re worth watching <3
Also, I’m aware these are all mainstream/big blockbuster type of movies and that there are so many other amazing films from smaller studios or independent artists that came out this year that I probably didn’t see because I didn’t hear about them - if you know of any please feel free to share/recommend! (or if you have seen any of the below I would love to talk about them & your thoughts!)
Captain America: Brave New World
Okay I know some people had problems with this one and if I watched it again I probably would notice them/care more, but what I cared about when I was watching it (and absolutely LOVED) was Sam Wilson's characterization!! We need nuanced, empathetic, shockingly kind heroes in these complicated times we are living in like never before. I adored these qualities as portrayed in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series and I loved how they were shown here, too. I hope we continue to see more of him.

This one made me cry. A lot. I wanted to write a whole Substack essay about it but I got busy, I might come back to it when time and executive functioning allows. One of the recurring themes I have been noticing lately in movies and just like life in general I think as a result of society becoming more and more isolated is the deep and utter need inside all of us for the connection that God designed us for. Connection with Him and other people. Even people like me who are naturally need a lot of alone time to function. As I have been inconveniently (or conveniently?) been made aware of since healing from some other things and having the bandwidth to realize it, um, being naturally introverted/anxious/having sensory issues/other mental health things does not give me a lifetime get out of gym pass from needing to be around/serve/support and love other people! This movie embodies that, my goodness. Though each of the characters' reasons for being a loner varies, it is very clear how crucial and life-saving being in a community really is for all of them. Also I love Bucky💕

See above for thoughts on loneliness because this one is another movie portraying that. 100% cried during this one, too. Honestly mad that not a lot of people watched this one (a unique, original, non-sequel story??!) likely due to a bad release date so close to two more annoying live-action remakes that no one I know really likes anymore, but apparently still make so much money I fear they will never stop making them. Elio is very neurodivergent coded so I think it hits a bit harder seeing why Elio feels the way he does and wants to be with the aliens, especially when you have seen/heard/watched the experiences of neurodivergent children and adults you care about in your life.
Superman
Oh wow did this movie make me love Super-Man. It was just so so good. & important. You probably already know (hopefully) since I think most people probably saw this one? but kindness is the real punk rock, baby. It really is. I don't even care if that sounds cheesy. When it becomes so normal for everyone to just be awful to each other all the time, the counter-cultural move becomes to radically reject that, like Clark does. I want to be like Super-Man, guys. He is very much a Christ-like figure/character in my opinion and I am so happy we will get to see this version more in future movies !!! this is awesome !
Fantastic 4: First Steps
I really liked this one, too! I loved the retro Disneyland Tomorrowland-ish aesthetic, it was so fun and creative! I loved the characters & their relationships to each other which were the heart of the film. I have personal issues/fears around pregnancies and births and all of that so some of the scenes were a little hard for me to watch, but I'm glad I watched it anyway. Sue Storm, y'all. What an incredibly strong individual, I just.. wow. I thought it was a really fantastic (as it should be) refresh/reboot of Marvel's First Family, I'm really glad it was made and that I got to see it <3
Wicked: For Good
Wicked is really freaking deep y'all. I loved this movie (and its Part One last year). Read anything Susanna Schwartz has written about it on Substack, she explains the themes very well. Still enjoying the soundtrack and striving to be more Elphaba than Glinda in my daily life. Or I guess more reformed/growing Glinda who is on a path to actually doing good not just being seen as good by other people. This is just full whimsy and wonder and depth and I am so glad. Rejoicify.
Zootopia 2
Thank God thank God thank God after being extremely disappointed 2+ years in a row (I'm looking at you Wish & Moana 2..) an actually good Walt Disney Animation Thanksgiving release !!! yes !!! I had a blast watching Zootopia 2. I adored the first one and am so happy this one was actually great, too. I love when animated movies have complex themes and do not dumb things down/infantilize their audience or bank on nostalgia to veil their lack of depth (this one did not do that). Hilarious and heartwarming, can't wait for future installments since I guess we're going to have a whole franchise now, fun.
K-Pop Demon Hunters
Oh I really thought I would go the rest of my life not watching this movie & I am glad I didn't! When it came out this summer it didn't sound like something I would be into and a lot of people were aggressively obsessed with the songs so I guess I had a little contrarian spirit in me avoiding it as a result so I held off until November when I finally gave it a chance. This was a really wonderful movie and as my brother's girlfriend said, "it's like such a good representation of spiritual warfare," and she's so right!! I was not expecting to care or enjoy this movie much at all but I cried and am now happily bopping along to all those songs, too. Such a fantastic message. Beautiful animation. Very unique and original vibes, aesthetics, etc. So glad I gave it a chance.

The author of the post (Benjamin Carlucci) explains so well how this movie is just an incredible representation of the gospel I just, wow. of course it is also a hilarious and compelling mystery like all the previous Knives Out stories.

Just realized that that Annabeth’s anxiety about not being able to enjoy Percy’s recommendations and things in the mortal world is going to make her jealousy and feelings about the whole Rachel situation even more painful to watch because she is someone Percy can and does do fun mortal things with wow I hate (and love) it here !!
Currently losing my mind at all the press & reviews after the premiere of the first few episodes of PJO Season 2 last night, cannot wait until it is out on Disney + for the rest of us 🥹🥹🥹
