How a last-minute switcheroo gave Sleeping Beauty Castle its ‘fairy tale’ charm…
According to Sam Gennawey’s The Disneyland Story: The Unofficial Guide to the Evolution of Walt Disney’s Dream:
“At some point during the design process, Walt had told Ryman that his interpretation [of Sleeping Beauty Castle] was a little ‘too realistic’. Still, Ryman continued on his own course.
“When the team gathered for the final design sign-off meeting with Walt, the model was as realistic as it had been when Walt had expressed his concern.
“At the very last minute, just before Walt joined the meeting, Ryman removed the top of the model and turned it around.
“Everybody complained that Walt would be mad, but Ryman knew better.
“Walt took one look and gave his approval.”

When people criticize Sleeping Beauty’s Castle for being ‘fake’…
Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle was famously inspired by Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.
Over the years, this has caused many cynics and critics to dismiss it as ‘fake’.
Well, duh.
No one over the age of ten ever imagined otherwise. And anyway, isn’t all art technically ‘fake’? (Van Gogh’s Sunflowers? Not real flowers. They’re not even scratch-n-sniff!)
The irony here is that Neuschwanstein Castle is also a ‘fake’, built some 400 years after the rest of Europe had stopped building castles and intentionally designed to evoke both the Middle Ages and the “musical mythology” of Mad King Ludwig’s friend, Richard Wagner.
So, yeah – take that, snooty critics!
Disney legend Marvin Davis (1910 - 1998) was a master planner, art director and scenic designer. Shown above are some of his ‘elevation drawings’ for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
