Three teenage girls running downstairs while giggling was not a good sign. Your daughter, Aliana, had her two friends sleeping over for the weekend. They were sweet girls, and you and your ex husband thought of them as your adopted daughters. But whatever they were plotting was not good for you.
Especially when the sentence started with, âMom, thereâs this trendâŚâ Here we go again. Another trend on her clock app or whatever she called it.
Aliana didnât post much on social media. She participated on rare occasions and got a good amount of likes on her scattered videos. Probably because of you being a victim each time.
They explained it to you and it seemed harmless. Harmless, as if you didnât know your daughterâs father.
All you had to do was call your ex and say goodnight to him. It was meant for parents who had been separated for years. They showed you a few videos so you could get the gist of it. You rolled your eyes when you read the comment section with people talking about how the divorced couples wanted each other.
âFine, fine, Iâll do it.â You gave in which caused the three girls to cheer and giggle even more.
It was a little after 9 PM. If he still had the same routine, Leon was probably unwinding from another day as a government agent. The chance that he would pick up? You hoped he didnât.
The girls settled on the opposing couch. They were waiting as you clicked on Leonâs contact information. Aliana quickly pressed the record button, focusing the camera on you sitting in a rather worn out oversized shirt and sweatpants.
You mumbled another, âThis is so stupidâ, before finally calling.
The phone rang once, twiceâ
âHello?â Leonâs voice came through the speaker. You were definitely caught off guard when he answered earlier than you expected. But you composed yourself when you remembered you were being recorded. âIs everything okay?â
âHey. Yeah, everythingâs fine.â You responded, and then pressed a finger to your lips to keep the girls quiet. The camera was heavily trained on you as you kept on the charade, âWhy wouldnât it be?â
âI donât know,â He let out a sound between a scoff and a laugh. âMaybe because you donât call me, and not this late. Something wrong with Aliana, or?â
âI told you, everythingâs fine. Sheâs fine. I was just thinking about you right now,â You were trying to come up with a lie that sounded plausible enough so he wouldnât suspect anything, âAnd then I decided to call and see if you were still awake so I could say goodnight.â
Silence. The girls were doing their best to hold in their laughter. One friend got a bit too loud and had to get hushed by the other. Thankfully, he didnât hear it, solely because he was focused on another part of your little lie, âYou were thinking about me?â You expected it should have raised more suspicions to him besides the late phone call.
âThatâs what I said. And then I decided to call to say goodnight,â You repeated. You shook your head at the camera, met with the wide grins of the three girls.
âOkay. Thatâs a little weird. Since when did you start sitting around, thinking about me?â Leonâs chuckle echoed from your phone, still clueless to him being on speakerphone. You didnât really realize the way your lips formed a smile at his quick laugh. âI mean, I havenât had a good night in a while.â
The shift in his tone was very clear as he said his next words, choosing to push the boundaries now that youâd started it all.
â⌠I could have a good night.â
âOh yeah? How?â You asked. The girls were eating the interaction up because it was going exactly in the direction they were hoping for.
âI donât know.â He paused briefly, â⌠I think if you let me come overââ The girls quietly gasped, clamping their hands over their mouths.
âOkay, no. Goodnight, Iâm ending the call now.â You were fast to cut him off. Even if you were divorced, Leon enjoyed making a few jokes here and there about your past relationship. In a way, it was sweet and also annoying.
He laughed loudly into his phone at how you turned him down, the same it had been each and every time, âHold on, hold on, hold onâ No, no, no. Donât go, Iâm still talking to you!â
âWell, Iâm not. So goodnight.â You were trying to get him to shut up before he said something slightly more vulgar, and the poor girls heard it.
âWhy canât I come over? You used to let me come over all the time!â Leon argued back. Those were the last things they heard him say before you took him off speaker phone and stood up from the couch. You muted yourself, glaring at your daughter who his behind her phone.
âYou see what you did? Now, heâs not going to leave me alone!â The video ended and their laughter was loud from the living room as you headed towards the kitchen, still arguing with your ex husband.
âLeon, you are not coming over⌠No, I donât care if you bring a bag, youâre not coming over.â
Unfortunately you caved, and he did end up coming over. Not that night, but a couple of days later while Aliana was at her friendâs house. It didnât go exactly as planned since she found out about it because Leon was caught up in the moment and had forgotten to turn off his location.
Tony, sarcastically: Yes, that's exactly what we're doing.
Tony: In our very limited time, we took a class in a very unnecessary form of communication just so we could talk about you behind your back. Congrats, you've figured us out.
Y/N, whispering to Thor: That's exactly what we did.
People keep saying thereâs a ceasefire but every single day we wake up to another explosion, another family destroyed, another name added to the list of martyrs. Iâm writing this because the world thinks Gaza is âcalmâ now.
Itâs not. The bombs didnât stop. The drones didnât stop. The funerals didnât stop.
During this so-called ceasefire, dozens of people were killed. Homes were burned. Children were pulled from under the rubble. Youâll see the photos Iâm adding below - all taken during the âpauseâ. This is what our reality looks like.
My own family is suffering too. We lost relatives. We lost our home.
312 Palestinians have been killed, entire families wiped out during a time that was supposed to bring safety.!
