The new edition of SCARLET TRACES, combining HG Wells’ War of the Worlds and our sequel Scarlet Traces, out now! #ianedginton #disraeli #2000ad #scarlettraces #waroftheworlds
A rather handy graphic explaining why you should read my new book THE COLDEST WINTER.
Within Days:
Four years ago I was as close to rock bottom as I’ve ever been.
I spent something like two solid months sitting in coffee shops in and around the City of London (which is not the same as London City), broken but breathing, mostly failing to work. Watching and listening.
Unusual Concentrations is a novella. It’s not about me, per se, but it is about that time. Or at least, it’s about some of the things I saw and heard and daydreamed during those dark days, and what I wish I’d done about them.
I think it’s funny. And sweet. And dark. And extremely odd.
It’s about crime, coffee and careless talk.
I’ve been meaning to work back round to prose for several years, and there are in fact a few (more conventional) irons in that fire right now, about which more soon. But this peculiar little story felt like the perfect artefact with which to experiment in self publishing.
So that’s what I’m doing. Later this week (or possibly next, because life) it’ll be online in .mobi, .epub and .pdf formats, for a ridiculously low price. Couple of bucks, probably. I’ll let you know.
-S.x
I first came to know Si through his novels, which are strange and brilliant. Looking forward to this.
Shading added; done! #helium #ianedginton #Disraeli #2000AD
HELIUM part one: flat colours under the inks with the clouds hand-“painted” in #Disraeli #2000AD #ianedginton #helium
Inks over pencils, rough pencils and models. The chequer pattern on the models acts as a key so I can draw in more detail. The clouds aren’t inked as I’ll be “painting” those in #ianedginton #helium #2000AD #Disraeli
Pencils for page one of HELIUM (the additions in red). To save time, I only tightly pencil critical stuff like human figures and faces. #2000AD #Disraeli #helium #ianedginton
Rough pencils for the first page of HELIUM, drawn in Manga Studio. Imported renderings from a 3d model act as “pencils” for the airship #helium #ianedginton #Disraeli #2000AD
3d model of the cargo ship CINDER HORSE made for the first episode of HELIUM. The colour chequer patterns act as a key to help me draw additional detail when I’m tracing from the rendering #helium #ianedginton #Disraeli #2000AD
Thumbnail layouts for the first page of HELIUM - sketched in (Evernote) Penultimate on the iPad and then imported into Manga Studio EX5 on the Mac. #helium #Disraeli #ianedginton #2000AD
Preview // Prog 1934
New Readers: Jump-on Here!
Three new stories start this Prog - An all-new Judge Dredd thriller: Blood Diamonds by Michael Carroll & Colin MacNeil.
Absalom makes a welcome return in Under A False Flag by Gordon Rennie & Tiernen Trevallion.
Finally, the creative team behind Stickleback, Scarlet Traces & Leviathan are back with a brand new, double-length Thrill: Helium by Ian Edginton & D’Israeli.
Also, new(-ish!) Sláine art droid, Simon Davis really gets to strut his stuff on current series, Primordial - written by Pat Mills, of course - as we see his version of the celtic warrior’s warp spasm, as shown on this week’s mind-blowing cover. Zarjaz!
Don’t say the Mighty Tharg doesn’t spoil you, you lucky Earthlets!
JUDGE DREDD // BLOOD OF EMERALDS Mega-City One, 2137 AD. Home to 50 million citizens, and still recovering from the decimation of the Chaos Bug, this urban hell is situated along the east coast of post- apocalyptic North America, where crime is rampant, poverty is rife, and unemployment near universal. Tensions run a constant knife-edge and only the zero-tolerance Judges — empowered to dispense instant justice — can stop total anarchy. Toughest of them all is JUDGE DREDD — he is the Law! In the wake of Chaos, Judges from other Justice Departments have bolstered the ranks, including Fintan Joyce from Emerald Isle… Michael Carroll (w). Colin MacNeil (a). Judge Dredd created by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra
ABSALOM // UNDER A FALSE FLAG UK, 2015. Inspector Harry ABSALOM is an old-school copper — curmudgeonly anti- authoritarian, he’s been with the force for over forty years. Suffering from an inoperable cancer, he’s also the head of a special squad that enforces The Accord, a diplomatic treaty made in the sixteenth century between the throne of England and the powers of Hell, which means his team are responsible for tracking down and taking to task those demonic entities that break that agreement. But his superiors have a hold over Absalom to keep him in line, hiding his grandchildren in a notorious place known as The Mills… Gordon Rennie (w). Tiernen Trevallion (a). Harry Absalom created by Gordon Rennie & Dom Reardon
SLÁINE // PRIMORDIAL Albion, in a time of legend. Celtic warrior SLÁINE united the tribes of the Earth Goddess Danu and became the first High King of Ireland. After ruling for seven years, he travelled through time to fight for the Goddess in other eras before returning to save his people from the Fomorian sea devils. Now, having journeyed to the Isle of Monadh to rescue Sinead from the Drune Lords, he’s being hunted by Trojan soldiers, who are led by his old friend Gort. The Drunes are experimenting on producing a highly powerful warrior of their own, called the Primordial, that will bring order to Albion… Pat Mills (w). Simon Davis (a). Sláine created by Pat Mills & Angie Kincaid
HELIUM // PART ONE NEW THRILL! The far future. It has been over three hundred years since the Great War ended, but there were no victors. Eighty-five per cent of the Earth’s surface now lies beneath a vast gaseous ocean known as the Poison Belt — a toxic, mutated cocktail of biological and chemical weapons designed by both sides to win the war. Instead, it almost spelt extinction for the human race. Those that survived cling to the High Lands — alpine valleys and mountaintop islands, safe from the noxious fog, and ply the clean air in ships of all description. Meanwhile, beneath the Belt, rumours of life abound… Helium created by Ian Edginton & D’Israeli
Ian Edginton’s and my new series for 2000AD, HELIUM, starts this week in Prog 1934. That first panel with the school kids is my favourite on of the whole episode… #disraeli #comics #ianedginton #2000AD #helium

Say “NO” to contests like these. Take back your worth.
I went to read the tags hoping it all would be against the contest, but there’s still people considering doing it or asking artists and friends to do it. So I feel it’s still really important to share. Don’t do it!
On Thursday at SDCC, I was racing through the Fantasy Artists section of the main convention hall on my way to somewhere else when I happened to glance up at Allen Williams’ booth and came to a screeching halt. As in, I literally screeched “WAAOW!” and stopped in my tracks. (Hopefully that wasn’t too weird! I imagine Allen must be used to it by now.)
I’d seen his work before, but only online, and never in any sort of higher resolution, and… oh. Just… Oh. Seeing it up close… So very special.
I don’t talk about this much, but I have a kind of sound/texture synesthesia with some visual crossovers. Once in a great while, a piece of art will set it off. Some of Allen’s more surreal, textural work makes it go absolutely nuts.
I spent a good fifteen minutes shyly smiling at Allen and his splendid partner Vicki and thumbing through the racks as they spoke with other con-goers, trying to decide what to buy. They had a bunch of beautiful stuff for sale, including some affordable giclee prints. I finally settled on the top image, because seriously, that looks exactly like what my texture/sound/visual synesthesia feels like when I’m engrossed in a piece of music. (As does the final image I’ve included in the above gallery, which I hope to own a print of someday.) I paid for it and blurted out some praise before staggering away in a daze.
All day, I kept staring at the delicate, feathery pencil linework, feeling music and hearing textures, wishing that I could have been more articulate when I met Allen. But what was I gonna say? “Hello, stranger! My heart and gut-strings aren’t often twanged by visual art in quite this way, but holy shit, somehow this looks exactly like what my sound/texture synesthesia feels like and I am totally freaking out right now”? That’d be a bit full-on, even for me!
Fast-forward to today: I was rushing through the Fantasy Artists section once again, buried in my phone, when my dear friend Neville, who I haven’t seen in years and have missed terribly, called my name. I rocket-launched myself at him for huggings. It was only after I’d calmed down a little that I realized we were standing *in* Allen Williams’ booth. Vicki remembered me from before!
Turns out Neville and Allen know each other very well. Which makes sense, because Neville’s work is amazing, too. So I found myself standing there once again, trying to put together words to explain to Allen that the texture of his work makes my synesthesia go nuts, when filmmaker Kevin McTurk, who I make music for, and whose work is also completely mind-bogglingly lovely, showed up to say hello to everyone, and more huggings ensued!
So then I just stood there, all melty happy DERP, surrounded by art that makes my brain go into automatic bliss overdrive, listening to Neville talk about the amazing new project he just announced at a panel, watching Kevin show clips from his new Victorian ghost story puppet movie to Allen and Vicki, and feeling quietly bolstered, because it’s always so nourishing to be in proximity to kind and brilliant people who are that genuinely invested in what they do, and interested in what their friends do.
And I realized that that’s why I keep coming back to SDCC, even though it’s exhausting and frustrating and smelly and sort of a corporate carny shitshow in many ways. Because it’s still populated by creative folks who are full of enthusiasm and kinship and kindness and excitement, and those are My People.
Allen even gave me a hug me goodbye! But I *still* couldn’t figure out how to tell him “your art makes my brain go fizzzzz” without sounding ridiculous. So I’ve decided I’d write it here instead. Hopefully it makes sense/isn’t too weird. I dunno. Sometimes when I get this overjoyed I just gotta yarf up a blog.
TL;DR: Yay art, yay friends, yay music, yay hugs, yay SDCC, and an extra big yay for Allen Williams’ exquisite art.
Good night. See you next year, lovelies.
I initially posted this entry about Allen Williams last summer. Last night I was gutted to hear that Allen is currently duking it out with both squamous cell carcinoma AND his insurance company.
I cannot say enough loving things about his art. Also, meeting him and Vicki was one of my SDCC highlights last year. It breaks my heart to know that they, like so many other families in the States, are being forced to squabble over his $50K health coverage on top of getting through chemotherapy and all the rest.
Please, please boost the signal on this, and if you’re in a position to do so, buy some of his art, or donate to his GoFundMe campaign.
Merry Christmas one and all!
