ok can we agree that the WORST feeling is when you’re just sitting around consciously procrastinating and you’re just overly aware that each second that passes is more time wasted and you like watch hours pass and you’re STILL procrastinating and you CANT STOP and your panicked brain is trapped inside a body that refuses to be productive and inside you’re screaming but outwardly you’re just eating chips
OH MY GOD THIS IS ME. This is exactly what happened on Sunday!!!
Me rn
This was me binge-watching Steven Universe episodes and eating mac n’ cheese last night.
Pretty much how I feel at this point in the semester. I don’t want to answer any more emails, grade any more work, or talk to my colleagues. This break can’t come soon enough.
When you have co-author who highlights and color-codes everything in your draft.
COMMENT. and. EDIT. PLEASE. I don’t need the %*#@-ing rainbow on my manuscript.
A Student’s Change of Heart
So I get an email today from an undergraduate who has been doing average/below average in my class (think Cs and Ds). This all stems from him not turning in assignments on time.
He wanted to explain to me that he was going back and doing all of the assignments he missed, not to get points, but just to learn the material. He thanked me for believing in him and said that he had a change of heart. He went from not wanting to do the assignments “because it’s a zero anyway” to wanting to do them just to learn the material.
Yes, my heart just pooped its pants.
Looking ahead at due dates
Is it just me or was this year like … Really fucking overwhelming? Like everything’s that’s happened to you this year has shaped you into a completely different person that you were at the beginning of this year
For me, yes for sure. My sibling died this year, and I feel like my entire view on life has been shifted. It has changed how I think about life, people, how I interact with people, talk to people. Everything.

The Conference Burnout
So I remember being so enthralled by conferences as a doc student, and even the first two years of attending, it was still so exciting and new. Now I find the sheen has worn off. I’m seeing these people I once idolized as just regular humans, and humans that I don’t particularly even like that much. Why? Because I hear them laughing about how they just finished their presentation on the plane or just before they presented; because I hear the same tired story of how our profession needs to change, yet they do nothing to change their own pedagogy or change the culture at their schools; because I see people only interested in hearing themselves speak and not being open to the ideas of others.
This isn’t all of the conferences I go to, but the big ones for my profession have definitely left me disheartened with the irrelevant research being done (it’s my blog so I can state my opinion; other people may find it fascinating). I’ve just not had a good time.
Okay, share over. It just depresses me a bit.

Somehow this is the most inspiring thing I’ve read in a long time. I’m going to go write now.

hahahahah
My least favorite part of academic conferences. Ask a good question; we don’t want to hear your pompous, self-promoting speech.
