I have multiple thoughts on this.

1) wow he does this a lot

2) I wish he did it happily sometimes

3) I now feel better for having to actively resist the urge to make Matt lick/wet his lips every other sentence in my fics

4) the post says #thetonguething but this was shared with “blep” in the tags and lemme just say I feel like “the tongue thing” and “blep” are two VERY different ways to react to these

A+ work everyone, and I would agree with @lily-ellison‘s tags that this is not a blep and would be more accurately categorized as a Tongue Thing. But it is certainly a happy Tongue Thing and that, friends, is what matters.

Hey everyone, it would appear that we have made a significant error, as extensive research (by which I mean I opened 6 tabs, including refreshing one to somehow sneak past a paywall) has revealed that what we’ve been referring to as “bleps” are more accurately categorized as “mlems.”

“’Mlem’ is a conscious act of licking, while a ‘blep’ — a tongue protruding from an animal’s mouth — just kind of happens.”1 Although I maintain that Matt’s lip-licking is probably more reflexive than deliberate, he certainly is not leaving the tongue hanging out of his mouth, which suggests it is more of a mlem.

Additionally, mlems (especially for cats, and we all know Matt is a cat2) often have an added degree of emotion behind the movement.  “When you see a cat mlem, it might be out of defiance or anger. This is licking with a purpose.”3 Similarly, Matt often seems to lip-lick as an expression of emotion, such as frustration or anxiety.

Again, I don’t think the licking is with a purpose insofar as he intends to lick and/or intends to communicate any emotion with the licking; but I do think the lip-licking is with a purpose insofar as his subconscious (specifically, the amygdala)4 is intentionally licking to self-soothe or self-regulate in response to specific negative emotion.

In the rare instances of a happy mlem, e.g. with Karen, the action is most likely the result of the amygdala and hypothalamus (regulating heart rate, breathing, body temperature, etc. and responsible for producing bonding chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin).5

So overall, I think his lip-licking, when not “the tongue thing,” is more like a mlem than a blep.

Consider also the fact that some mlems may occur when frustrated or angry because Matt’s body instinctively hunts for threats when he’s riled up. Just scent and sound may not be enough to fully read his environment. His subconscious drives him to use all his senses in a search for The Bad Thing so that he can punch it into submission. Also explains some happy mlems and neutral mlems - tasting adds an additional level of awareness of someone’s happy feelings. Sadly mleming the serotonin in the air does not let him steal it for his own serotonin-deprived brain but I’m sure it tastes nice.
