MARSHA P. JOHNSON!
Marsha P. Johnson, born August 24th, 1945, was quote: โan American LGBTQ activist, sex worker, and performer.โ (Wikipedia.org, โMarsha P. Johnsonโ). She is very much known for her contributions to fighting for LGBTQ rights, as well as being LGBTQ herself! She is also known for her participation in riots and protests (such as the Stonewall Riots, and Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, AKA S.T.A.R.)
Marsha was assigned male at birth, and started dressing and appearing more feminine since she was five years old! She even started to describe herself as a drag!
We of course, canโt mention Marsha without mentioning her protests and advocacy! Yes, weโve already mentioned them, but weโre gonna go more in depth:
Iโm going to quote womenshistory.org to start off this section. โThroughout the 1970s, Johnson became a more visible and prominent member of the gay rights movement.โ (Womenshistory.org, โMarsha P Johnsonโ). To add onto this, Marshaโs involvement in riots is well documented!
Marsha actively spoke out against transphobia despite danger towards her life, and began the S.T.A.R. organization with Sylvia Rivera. The organization aimed towards giving community to LGBTQ+ youth with non-accepting or hateful families!
Rivera and Johnson also began the Star House, which was a place where LGBTQ+ youth could feel safe!ย
Marsha began performing with the drag queen group โHot Peachesโ in the 70s as well. This also helped her attract the attention of pop stars and famous people! She also was included in a series of prints called โLadies and Gentlemenโ by Andy Warhol.ย
Marsha had stated in a 1975 that her ambition was โgay brothers and sisters out of jail and on the streets again.โ!
Despite her cheery demeanor, she still had her fair share of problems. Other than discrimination, Marsha faced mental challenges and had many breakdowns which led to her being in and out of a couple mental hospitals.ย
She also participated in sex work to gain money, which led to her being diagnosed with H.I.V. in 1990, and speaking out against the treatment of those with it in that time, and how people treated them like monsters.
Unfortunately, on July 6th, 1992, Marshaโs body was found in the Hudson River. Despite it being originally ruled a suicide, it was later heavily suspected (though not confirmed) of foul play.ย
