ARTIST STATEMENT
I chose the Corinthian Room as an influence for my unit 2 final. The concepts I wanted to explore were the ideas of camouflage, “hiding behind a mask” versus how something truly is, and cultural appropriation. I wanted to achieve these concepts through taking Greek comedy and drama masks and tweaking them to fit my ideas. The camouflage aspect is shown through use of color and design because some colors recede into the background whereas some pop forward from the flat background color (i.e. the geometric/emotionless mask’s color is mostly the same as the background color, so some parts recede whereas others pop forward). The colors of the flowers and various symbols I chose for each mask also blend in or stand out depending on how the colors interact with each other (i.e. some parts of the vine are the same value of the background blue but the flowers above the geometric mask pop out because they are close to being the blue’s complement). The whole idea of hiding behind a mask instead of showing your true self is achieved by the duality of the masks I have drawn. The flowy, very organic, emotion filled mask is pops out against the background because of the complementary colors used mostly in the face (showing your true self), but the rigid, geometric, emotionless mask’s color matches that of the background, and as I stated earlier, seems to hide almost like someone just trying to seem ‘normal’ in society and straying away from being ‘different’. Finally, cultural appropriation is being addressed in the way I took masks associated with Ancient Greek theatre, as well as the mythology story of Persephone and Hades (the plants and owl were associated with the god and goddess), and turned it into a different set of masks with new meaning behind it. I had also appropriated my chosen color scheme from colors appearing in the Masonic Temple and the European masterwork, “Crowning of the Thorns” by Caravaggio.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
My piece is about the long distance relationship i have with my boyfriend, Patrick, who lives back home from where i grew up. I got my inspiration from the powerpoint for unit 1 with the collage of a portrait with leaves as hair as well as finding inspiration pieces on the internet. The piece i found on the internet also had sheet music as the background and had a loose painting style that caught my eye which allowed some of the sheet music to pop through the skin color. I incorporated gradation through the use of acrylic paint on his skin, hair, and shirt. I de-saturated the blues on his shirt for gradation as well as adding blue-greens for a different type of gradation. I used the same technique with the blues for his hair as a background before i glued coffee grounds and then finally painting more browns and blue for texture. For his skin, I used different yellows, browns, and some reds to create gradation while again mixing white in some areas for light. Then to balance the piece i added warmer colors to the shirt and cooler colors to shadows on his face. I used sheet music to represent Patrick going for music education at school (it is stained with different flavors of coffee because that's something he drinks a lot), the coffee grounds were to add texture to the hair (also furthering his love of coffee),and the envelopes and the stamps are representative of our long distance relationship.
