Jason huffs softly, glancing at the room number for the lecture hall for the third time upon walking up to it. Heâd entered the wrong room one too many times this first week to embarrass himself again. Lucky for him, he had the right time, the right room number, everything. He just needed to enter and find a seat. Easy, right?
First semester for a freshman English course? Of course, everyone was early. He made the mistake of coming 5 minutes before the start time.
He glances around the lecture hall. Sure, when he registered, there were 300 seats in the class, 90 full. He didnât expect it to fill up so quickly.
He spots youâyou were sitting in the middle row, one seat in from the end of the row. He recognized you. A friend. From before he died. You never did like his whole Robin thing. His whole vigilante thing. Probably the only seat he could take without walking through 20 people, so he decides to sit next to you.
âHey,â he mumbles quietly, voice gruff as he squeezes into the tiny lecture hall chairs.
âDid you want me to move in one?â You whisper, already packing up your stuff to move seats.
âNo, no, itâs fine.â
He glances over your stationeryâover you. Cute, he thinks.
âYouâre a freshman?â He asks, still eyeing your various pens and agenda.
âI am,â you confirm, glancing at him. âAre you?â
He huffs a laugh. He is, he just doesnât look it. You havenât seen him in years, of course, you wouldnât recognize him. 6â0â, 200-something pounds? Anyone would think heâs a bodybuilderâa fully grown adult. âI am.â
âExplains the build. Not- not that itâs bad.â
He huffs another laugh, perking up when the professor enters the room, already beginning to speak. He pulls out his laptop to take notes, watching as you do the same.
Three hours. Three hours of pure English lecture next to his childhood friend. If Jason knew what heaven was like, it would be this. All he had to do was somehow explain to you that heâs your best friendâyour boyfriendâfrom all those years ago.
The semester progressed, and the two of you grew close. If you werenât at his dorm, he was at yours.Â
Tonight, though, neither of you was in a dorm. Roy had somehow convinced both of you to attend a frat partyâdespite the fact that both of you would do anything but go to a party. Roy was getting initiated, though. You two wanted to support him.
Attached at the hip was an understatement. You and Jason never left each otherâs side during the party.
âItâs so loud,â you yell into Jasonâs ear, swirling the beer in your cup.
âYou wanna go upstairs or something? Roy gave me a tour of the house a bit ago,â he yells back.
You shake your head, not wanting to ruin Royâs night. âIâm sure he wants us down here. Conversing and such.â
âYour call, princess. Iâll scoop you up, and weâll go get ice cream.â
âHa ha. I know you just want ice cream. Weâre here to support Roy.â
âFine, then. Donât come crawling back to me when you want ice cream then, angel.â
You huff a laugh, sniffing the beer in your hand, huffing at the smell. Jason sees this and plucks the cup out of your hand.
âI was drinking that,â you huff, offended.
âYeah, yeah. Donât pretend like you like it,â he hums, downing the cup quickly.
âI think someone spiked your drink, princess,â he grumbles, body slumping onto you.
âHoly- Roy!â You yell, glancing around for the redhead.
Roy pops up seemingly out of nowhere, beaming. âHey, sweet cheeks! Whatâs goinâ on with Jay?â he presses his hand against Jasonâs forehead.
âHe drank my drink, and someone spiked it,â you explain quickly, struggling to prop him up.
âWhoa, okay. Letâs get him back to the dorms, yeah?â
You nod, allowing Roy to help you bring Jason back to his dorm.
Finally, the two of you lower him onto his bed, propping his head up.
âYouâll be alright?â Roy glances at you. âMaybe I should stay and make sure he doesnât choke on his barf.â
âYouâre fine, Roy. Go have fun. Congrats,â you smile, pushing him out of the dorm room.
The door shuts, and Jason groans, arms outstretched toward you.
âHowâre you feeling, Jay?â You mumble quietly, walking over.
âI missed you,â he grumbles, hugging you tightly.
âWhat do you mean? Iâve been with you all night,â you huff a laugh.
âNo, I⊠Robin. I missed you when I died.â
âYou- I was Robin, and you were my best friend. And then I died, and all my family and friends stopped being vigilantes because of what happened to me. Except for Bruce. That fucker. I love my dad.â
âJay- Jason. Jason Todd. Youâre telling me youâre the same Jason from when I was a kid?â you say quietly, pushing back the sweaty white tuft of hair from his forehead, searching for a small scar on his forehead from when he bumped his head when he was younger.
âIn the flesh,â he smiles.
âWhite hair. Heterochromia. Youâre so much bigger. Thereâs no way youâre the same Jason,â you grumble, analyzing his appearance.
âItâs a lot to explain. But please believe me,â he huffs quietly. âHow can I convince you?â
âI- I donât know,â you mumble quietly, finger tracing over the forehead scar you found. The same scar you would kiss before he left your after-school dates. The same scar you kissed hours before he left to find his mother. The same scar in the last place you kissed before he died.
âYou⊠you used to call me birdie. Birdie, right? And we would hang out at the park after school, so we had a chance to hang out without teachers or parents watching. Please believe me, angel.â
You did do that. You did all of that with him. But something is telling you itâs not him. That somehow, for some reason, someone had it out to get you and decided to hire someone to take Jasonâs name and appearance. You canât believe it.
âWhatâs my favorite color?â
âI never told you, but I told Jason when we went out. Whatâs my favorite color?â
You watch as he speaks. Despite being drugged out and drunk, he answered perfectly.
You watch as he mumbles stories from when you were kids. Little gifts he got for you, little notes you passed to him. Everything.
This was the Jason Todd you knew.
