There was a hoard of research done recently that argued, to an extent, that playing music with another person could be more intimate than sex. Something about the release of oxytocin in the brain, the bonding neurotransmitter that invoked feelings of trust. And while Devan crooned on about how she fell in love with you, heart and soul, the way a fool would do, madly⊠Aurora couldnât help but think that those neuroscience geeks had some kind of point. The electricity that crackled in the air, she realized suddenly, would be nothing in comparison to when Devan really let herself go.
Aurora was a good enough actress to simply pretend that she was having fun, but for some reason, she couldnât shake the smile off of her perfectly glossy pink lips even as the song finished. She played the ending chord with a sort of flourish, curling her fingers as she lifted her hands in the air. A laugh bubbled up from her chest, and she tilted her head forward, really getting into it. âOh god,â She inhaled, placing a hand on her heart. Really, this was cake. âI should have known youâd get all the words perfectly. Not that I doubted you for a second, of course.â The only thing, really, that would have made this all perfect would have been if her eyes could shine. Black eyes didnât exactly shine, did they? And Devan had such beautiful ones, so emotional when she sangâŠ
Aurora scoffed, waving a hand casually, as she nudged the other girl from on the piano bench. âOh, please. Youâve got to let yourself have a little fun every once in a while. Surely any teacher would understand an impromptu jam session?â Thatâs it, Aurora. Support, but donât be overtâ not yet.Â
Auroraâs stomach did a somersault as the book suddenly appeared, sheâd been waiting for this moment for as long as sheâd concocted it in her head, obsessed over it, and finally made it happen in what could not have been a more perfect moment. âMay I?â Aurora asked, as she nonchalantly held out a hand which she hoped the binder would be placed in. The fun of a surprise was obviously gone, as Aurora was sure she knew 95% of what was in that binder, and if she really wanted to, she could take a pretty good guess at what Devan would want to rehearse.
"I wouldnât have offered if I didnât want to play for you," Aurora teased lightly, the grin on her lips incomparable to the sun, all things considered. There were many things that Aurora wanted to do to (and with) the girl seated beside her, but she had to calm herself down. Baby steps, she reminded herself. Youâll get there. "I think Sergei might roll over in his grave, but he can surely spare me for a few songs." Aurora immediately adjusted her posture, set her hands in ready-to-play position on the keysâ all she needed was the girl. "Miss Kane," Aurora bowed her head, adding more to the gallant charade of what a gem she hoped she was coming across as. "What will your first selection be?"
