Jervis neither believes nor disbelieves in ghosts. He’s a neuroscientist; he’ll check the wiring, acoustics, carbon monoxide, sleep deprivation, suggestion, and every other mundane explanation first.

But he’s also Bermudian-born, raised by an Ulster-Scots mother, spent his adolescence in London, and later served during the Troubles. He grew up surrounded by cultures rich in folklore, superstition, ghost stories, and complicated ideas about death. So he respects the story even when he questions the explanation.

“I don’t know” is, after all, a perfectly respectable scientific answer.

The brainworms won. I finally cracked Jervis’ CV.

His first Ph.D. is in Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience, which focuses on the relationship between human behavior and the underlying processes of the brain; not the general “brain smart” concept discussed in pop-science. Why do we recognize faces? How do we know where our body ends and someone else’s begins? Why does synesthesia happen? Why does AIWS happen? Why do we hallucinate? Why do we see patterns? Why does the brain fill in missing information? How does the brain reorganize itself after injury? What happens when those systems go wrong?

Then he goes and gets a second doctorate in Neuropharmacology, because apparently one Ph.D. wasn’t enough. 😂 And that’s where the million dollar question shifts from, “How does the brain work?” to, “Okay… can we change it?”

Seizure medications. Sensory filtering and overload. Memory. Fear. Cortical excitability. Neurotransmitters. Anesthetics. Everything that lets you tweak the nervous system instead of just observing it.

It’s also why I think he’d end up at Wayne Enterprises doing pharmaceutical R&D instead of staying in academia forever. He doesn’t just want to understand the brain; he wants to help people. Then Alice comes along, and suddenly everything he’s spent his life studying becomes personal to a heartbreaking degree.

hope as a defense mechanism. as a coping strategy. as a way to see there is still a future to fight for and then to keep fighting for it. hope as in it being the thing you hold on to so it can save you. hoping so I won’t feel defeated by cruelty in the world, keeping hope alive because others desperately want us to lose it.
