Charles Silverstein, who played a pivotal role in depathologizing homosexuality and coauthored the landmark book “The Joy of Gay Sex,” has died at the age of 87. The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies announced Silverstein’s death last Monday. The organization described him as “a hero, an activist, a leader, and a friend,” and added that, “His contributions to psychology and the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals have been felt around the world.” Those contributions included a presentation in front of the American Psychiatric Association in 1973. “What I did was write a parody, a satire, of all the absurd things that the American Psychiatric Association had diagnosed,” Silverstein previously said of the presentation. “I threw back at them their diagnoses over the decades and how funny it all sounds now, and pointed out that their fun had hurt a lot of people.” Head to the link in bio to read more.
