One of the only two gay bars in my town got rent-hiked out of their location... the landlord was a homophobic POS who didn't care about the people that found refuge within its walls.
No more local downtown drag shows, you gotta head out of the city limits now. No more walkable, street level, accesible gay bar, the one 30 minutes across town is just off the highway with a flight of steps leading up to it.
There's other bars in the neighborhood, sure... hell there's BETTER bars with better music and better service and better prices but they aren't OUR bar. The people at those bars look at you funny when you walk in with rainbow hair and piercings, and call you slurs to your face.
The lease on the property was (illegally imo) cut short at the beginning of July, mere days after the end of pride month, and the historic bar's most prosperous year to date.
It's not about the bar itself, it's about the message the city is sending. YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.
