Just my little corner of Tumblr. I'll mostly post here about video games and maybe something else if I feel like it. Profile pic by @perculiarmarsu on Tumblr!
Ah, Sage. An interesting concept that I do unfortunately think gets a little ruined by just being meme'd as "gun healer," but that's just me. I played SGE a little during EW, getting it to level 80 or so where the leveling started. I remember stopping just because I didn't think it was as intuitive to me as SCH, my favorite healer, and... I still have this opinion.
Now, with that said, I do actually think SGE is the better designed healer, with a bit more options for damage that break up pressing your 1 by a good amount and actually has some interesting ways to get movement. It just feels a little big brained for me, which I'm cool with. The leveling was quite smooth and with fast queue times for everything. I would similar put it at the same tier of WHM, a solid C tier. I'll basically never play this as my healer over SCH willingly, but I wouldn't hate doing a dungeon or something on it either.
DNC has reached level 100. I believe this was the longest journey, but only by a hair. DNC started at 60 and I believe I picked up BRD for this short series from level 61, but either way. DNC was never a job I was super interested in, but it ended up... pretty solid. I wouldn't say "I would like to raid on this job" levels, but at least like "If I have to do an Expert roulette on this job, I'd be cool with that." Crazy how you can actually make a fun physical ranged job.
Anyway, not much to say, DNC just felt solid. I really like that it is a physical ranged job that actually has to get in close for their AoE, even if that does get a little iffy and weird every so often. I like the dances, I like hitting their burst. I just like DNC. Also, I think it is genuinely one of the more consistently fun jobs, even when downsync'd very low. Solid B tier, I could be argued up to A, but we'll see if I have any "man, I really wish I was playing DNC" right now moments for any other jobs.
Final Fantasy XIV Evercold New Tank: Bastion! Analysis and Impressions!
So, the keynote has just wrapped up and we got our look at the first of the two new jobs. That being the new tank, Bastion! The trailer below:
I have thoughts about the things we see and the things we've learned. But first, let's analyze the smidge of gameplay footage we see in this trailer.
GAMEPLAY
Firstly, we see the Roegadyn charge up their shields with stuff. This potentially could be a cast time, since the animation seems long enough to be a small cast time, but it could also just be some buff that just has a big animation, especially since we see the buff animation being applied to him right before the shield glows starts.
Then we see a big attack. Notably, this is a claw attack... at range. Going frame by frame, they shoot out one of their claws into the target and then follow it up with the other one which cases a big explosion. This might be related to the before buff we saw. Hell, if I have to make a guess, this might be a Soulsow from RPR equivalent for Bastion. It does seem pretty similar.
Then we see a gap closer... with damage. This is interesting, since PLD was one of the last tanks with damage on their gap closer, but is getting that removed in Evolved Mode from the last showcase, but now Bastion is getting it.
After that we see the Bastion follow it up with 4 claw strikes, going right, left, right, left. Not sure what this is, since it doesn't seem to be their basic combo. No combo sparks comes from this and those haven't been removed from Evolved Mode, since PLD still gets them. The cones on the ground as the robot is getting hit might indicate that this is AoE. If so, thank god for unique AoEs on tanks again instead of it all being player or enemy based circles! Well, outside of DRK Flood of Shadow, Shadowbringer and Eventide being lines.
Then we have a big flurry of blows, which transition into an uppercut and then a slam down with a pretty big explosion on the ground to end it. It doesn't actually seem to be AoE, but it seems to just be a big thing. Again, not sure where this fits into their kit.
We then see them switch to the cannons on the "back" of the shields. I assume this is some sort of buff, potentially their damage buff in the vein of PLD's Requiescat/Imperator mode, just not with a damage pop. First we get to see a double shot from the right shield, then a three round barrage from the left and finally a hop up into a left shot, right shot and then a combined bigger shot. This just seems to be a combo, but no combo sparks shown, which is weird since RPR and VPR's trailers do show those as more recent examples.
Then we see a defensive skill. This is likely either to be their Guardian, Damnation, Shadowed Vigil and Great Nebula equivalent or that is their invuln. GNB's showcase back in the day showed both Superbolide and Nebula, so I think it is fair to assume that this is one of those two.
After that, we see them put their cannons to the ground, shoot them into it to create an explosion at their enemy. Again, and I'm sorry, no idea how this actually goes into their kit at the moment.
Then, their final attack. They put both their cannons to each other and shoot of a big shot. Again, no idea how it fits into the kit, but it did remind me of something so I made this quick little meme (it's definitely not perfect, but you understand)
So, we get a little bit of info for gameplay, but not a lot and that's no surprise. It does seem they are gonna go heads down and work on Evolved Mode (and the new jobs obviously) until they are ready to show them during the job action trailer live letter. We'll find out more and I'll have more thoughts on the job at that point!
Also, from the bit that was talking about the lore of the job, it also has defensive and healing skills or spells. So uh, yeah, this might genuinely just be another PLD like, just slightly different in how they end up playing.
Aside from that, as we already knew, it is a main tank and it is Evolved mode only. It's main and only weapon are the Skyltborg (roughly translates to "Shield Castle" from the old Germanic), the dual shields we see. While we didn't outright get confirmed whether they can block... let's be real, they will be able to.
Now, let's discuss the bit of lore that we got. Wasn't really worth to be mentioned in the title, because it isn't much, but still, let's go over it.
LORE
So Bastions come from the Northern Empty, ancestral homeland of both the Sea Wolves and Hellsguard Roegadyn, though it is specifically more known as the Sea Wolves' homeland. So it is just from Hydaelyn, but not from mainland Eorzea, so that's nice. This is as martial art that has been cultivated for generations upon generations into the technique we see it as today and partially have seen it on Rhitahtyn sas Arvina.
So this does confirm that we're looking at a still existing martial art... seemingly. We don't really know much about the Nothern Empty, so who knows? Maybe the last surviving Bastion will be our job trainer and die by the end of it, so we're the only ones left on the Source, which won't matter when we have united the stars or whatever.
Last up, the opinion corner or my impressions!
IMPRESSIONS
This seems to be FF14's most direct or indirect reference to Viking, which was an old job from FF3 that never got brought back in any of the main FF games that had a job system, but it was a tank job in that game. The armor kind of resembles more classic viking aesthetics, regardless of how accurate those actually are. Obviously, everything else has basically been made from the ground up.
With that said, how do I like it? Well... quite a bit. I wasn't expecting the Rhitahtyn shirt to be as straight forward as "it is literally just the gunshields" but I also don't hate that. This job also seems to take some animations from like a slower MNK or something. Not quite punches, but a good amount gets kind of close and seeing how the Skyltborg get used in melee? Yeah, I can definitely see some inspiration from that. I'm very down for this job, even though I am very much wondering what makes this unique to a PLD. Especially since it does seem to go a bit close with taking the ranged aspect PLD was kind in and having both healing and defensive things it can use for allies. Sure, that might not literally mean Requiescat/Imperator, Passage of Arms > Round Table and such get copied, but I do feel like the distinctions also with subroles needs to be bigger.
Again though, this is based on the very limited information that we have. Maybe this is a stance swapping job that switches from melee to ranged to keep cooldowns rolling on both, which could make it feel very different from PLD. We'll just have to see. Definitely leveling this day 1 though. I was going to anyway, but I'm super interested and am so down for what I saw, I could see this being the new main.
So uh... that's it. Based on like 5 minutes of total footage, I got all that. Dang. Anyway, thanks for reading and have a nice Fan Fest everyone! o/
Ah, WHM. This was a really quick journey I've just been lazy to write about. 95 - 100 was all that was left. It was a fun little journey though. Healing is pretty fun. Not super interesting or challenging, admittedly, but I still think it is fun. And WHM exemplifies that. It isn't my favorite healer, but it is the most pure healer of the healers.
Solid C tier. Nothing wrong with this, just also nothing mindblowing. At least this has a single button to use that is actually kind of fun to use! Yes, that is in fact a point of hatred against BRD, how could you tell? I do wonder how no cast time Glare will feel in Evolved Mode with Evercold, I honestly think it will make healing a lot less interesting since I think cast times are actually part of the interesting part of healing.
FFXIV Evercold: New Tank Speculation and Ramblings Before EU Fan Fest
Hello! This is a very messy post! These are my notes I took every since NA Fan Fest and about ideas I've had for the new tank coming in Evercold. I'm just gonna release this as is and not think about structure too much. Have fun reading my ramblings :)
Paladin = classic (quasi holy) knight tank
Warrior = classic angry tank
Dark Knight = slightly less classic darkness tank
Gunbreaker = odd ball, though more agile/lean bodyguard and/or infiltration tank. Plus, almost entirely no magic. Sure, aether infused cartridges, but you could easily flavor it as something else or provide another explanation
New tank = ?????
All off tanks are basically lone wolves with lost arts. WAR has been essentially brought to a point of extinction with only a few Hellsguard practicing it (and Dorgono, the female Xaela in the 60-70 quests), DRK might as well be actually extinct and we're 1 of 2 canonical users of the dark arts (wait, crap, that's a pun NOOOOOOO-) and GNB has also almost entirely faded because of Bozja's fall. There is the trainer, the dude you fight in the job quest (i don't think he died???), Thancred and us still practicing it and I think a few of the NPCs in Bozja have a gunblade equipped, but it's not a lot.
PLD on the other hand is a martial art that quite a few still practice, since it is a martial art of Ul'dah to protect the Sultanate. What if the new tank is part of an order or organization of some sort with a martial art that still just exists to this day and isn't some weird dying breed? Like, if it does end up being a DnD Warden-esque idea of a nature based tank, what if Wardens are around in Gridania or similarly forested areas (maybe even the Viera), you just don't see them as they are fierce fighters who battle the outside threats head on and then go back to commune with nature or something.
Plus, the job could come from Yok Tural, since we have literally nothing from over there yet (VPR kind of, that is just made from all over Tural). Otherwise, Garlemald makes sense, since they could use more jobs than just Reaper. Meracydia also makes sense, though I don't think we'll get anything from that until we actually go to Meracydia. Please just not Aldenard. Let the practice come from Yok Tural and start to slowly spread to everywhere, just not originating from Aldenard.
Similarly, the tanks also generally have a color scheme they follow. This theory I'm less a fan off, since GNB is weird, but to discuss it anyway:
PLD uses White the most, since it is generally associated with light. There are almost no dark animations on PLD's kit, Expiacion being an obvious exception, though even that focuses on light with there being a starry thing going on.
WAR very much uses Red, because the inner beast, rage and to a small degree even fire. Red = aggressive, so WAR gets it the most.
DRK kind of obviously uses Black the most, because… dark. Sure, that might be complimented with reds and purples since that is how FF shows off dark aspected aether, but it is still black for the most part.
Then GNB throws all of this in the dumpster. Skills wise, I'm still confident to say that GNB mainly uses Blue. Yes, a lot of orange/red because of the explosions, but a lot of their stuff is blue. However, their relics seem to be all over the place with glow colors. Blue, White, Yellow and Red… like, PLD is also a bit all over the place, but it mainly focuses on being something you can recognize as light. GNB genuinely seems to have no idea what it wants to do.
This leaves us with our new tank… not really being able to do much of anything. If you do look at this and miss one big color, that is also my closest thing to a guess: Green. However, GNB seems to be all over the place, so I really don't feel confident in making that guess be something I'd be willing to put money on. GNB could suddenly decide to be Green after all, they don't seem consistent on what color they want to associate with it.
It is also generally a theme that we're getting jobs of areas that we are going to in that expansion… as long as it is on the Source. I will immediately knock it down that the job will stem from the Fourth, since just logically speaking, it won't since we (the Warrior of Light) need to be able to obtain the job before we even set foot on the Fourth and unless some minor Ascian goes to the Fourth, is like "ooooooh, tank job!" and comes back to the Source for the sole purpose of teaching this job… yeah, no, that sounds like a lottery situation. But regardless, with the jobs with areas we go to in those expansions:
HW gave us DRK, AST and MCH, all pretty explicitly tied to Ishgard. Only AST gets a bit more dubious since it is a blend of Sharlayan and Ishgard, but even then we do technically visit Sharlayan, just New Sharlayan aka Idyllshire.
SB gave us SAM and RDM. SAM comes from the Far East and RDM comes from Gyr Abania, both main places we go for the expansion. Sure, red magic was made by people from Mhach and Amdapor after the War of the Magii, but it was created in Gyr Abania from the survivors of said war.
ShB gave us GNB and DNC. Now this is an interesting one. GNB (primarily) comes from Bozja, from Gunnhildr's Blades, and we do go to Bozja in the exploration zone. Now DNC… that one is the first to break the mold. DNC comes from Thavnair, a place we wouldn't go to until the next expansion. So… that does throw a wrench in our plan.
EW gave us SGE and RPR. SGE comes from Old Sharlayan, RPR from Garlemald. Back on track with main expansion zones that we go to.
DT gave us VPR and PCT. VPR comes from Tural, so that's completely by the book. PCT is our next wrench thrower, since PCT comes from a Sharlayan archon (named Relm, because of course she needed to be named after the FF6 character she was named after) who… just kind of existed. Assuming she stayed in Sharlayan, I suppose technically it is a previous zone, but nothing really confirms that aside from the fact tha tshe is an Archon.
So where are we going during EC? …No clue. The Fourth, sure, but where on the Source? No clue, so no real use speculating on what the new tank job can be because of locations. We will get more info in the coming Fan Fest in 2 weeks, but we also might just get the tank job's reveal there… so uh… I guess it doesn't really matter one way or another.
Aside from that, let me just give some ramblings about what things I would like from the new tank.
Please be somewhat connected to elemental powers! Like, if we get like fire, ice and thunder stuff, that would be so cool and I would like that a lot. Even if it is more limited to just 2 elements, it would be so cool, since all the other tanks are generally not elementally aspected. WAR vaguely does fire things and GNB has explosions so fire, but none of them are truly like channeling the elements at all.
In terms of weaponry, I'd be happy if it uses a weapon and shield. I'm personally not a big fan of the dual shield concept/theory that people have been floating since we saw the job hint shirt of Rhitahtyn. I do have faith that FF14 job team will be able to do it in an interesting way if it does end up being dual shield, but I'd rather it just not be and it instead be like hammer/mace + shield or spear + shield (yes, Halone infected me with this idea and I'm making it everyone else's problem). Please just have a shield. Don't make me look at another tank, like the aesthetic, but miss having a shield :(
Oh, also, since the job will exclusively be Evolved Mode: make it a consistent damage tank, you cowards. You took consistent damage PLD away from me and with the burst meta gone, you have the opportunity to give consistent damage jobs back. Do it, you cowards, since you aren't making Evolved PLD consistent damage >:(
Last minute addition since I was talking to a friend: Marshal seems like a pretty likely name for the tank. "Guess Who's Back?" references Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers. Marshal is a high, if not the highest, rank in the military. It might be a stand in for Judge, seeing as Rhitahtyn's name in the Roegadyn language means something along the lines of "right judge." Judges in FF12 are the military officers in the Archadian Empire, with Judge Magister being the highest rank. That… sounds plausible to have Marshal be a stand in for Judge, since the Garlean Empire has some pretty close references to FF12's Archadian Empire, having its own version of Gabranth and all that. It does mean that if this is true, the new tank is probably from Garlemald, which could tie into a Garlemald restoration being a thing in EC, similar to the Ishgard and Doman restorations in the past.
That said, that is basically all I got. I guess we'll see next week on Friday! …Hopefully. Please don't be until Tokyo.
…So, BRD huh? Oh boy. BRD started at level 60 for this leveling project and… I understand why I didn't touch it for that long. BRD bored me to tears. BRD was genuinely rough to get through, to a point that I have now unlocked the combat Allied Society daily quests for SB (only Kojin), ShB, EW and DT to speed along this entire process a bit, because I wanted BRD to be done with. Note: BRD only got 2 days of Pelupelu daily quests, the rest were unlocked for different jobs. I was just so bored that I was like "I need something to distract me from this that isn't just doing my Expert roulette."
BRD was genuinely so awful for my mental, I was just checked out and this didn't really change as I got levels. It got better with Empyreal Arrow giving a guaranteed proc on your songs and Apex Arrow's bar existing and the better RNG on Refulgent Arrow procs with Burst Shot (and the trait that allows both DoT skills and Iron Jaws proc it when used)... but it just wasn't enough to keep me engaged in playing the game. BRD's burst is genuinely kind of fun, but everything outside of that just... wasn't. The second I noticed that BRD's procs can only happen every 3 seconds, I could basically automate what I was doing outside of burst. When people say that the game is so boring, I can now only imagine them as BRD mains.
Genuinely F tier, I don't even think at higher levels it became fun enough for me to want to play it in anything even remotely serious. I think its Evolved Mode, which does look similar to current SMN, can genuinely only be an improvement. If anything scares me for one button combos for Evolved Mode, it is not getting a proc on Burst Shot for 10 uses in a row (yes, I counted). Also, yes, F tier didn't exist on the tier list until this point and it will continue to exist unless I don't have any D tier experiences >:(
Sorry this was so negative (and long winded because of being negative), but I had a lot of emotions that I needed to get out. If you like BRD, more power to you! This is very subjective and I do try to make that know by using things like "to me" and just generally referring to myself when expressing thoughts. Anyway, WHM up next and that should be a quick one, probably this week still, since it is was practically already almost done :v See you next time and thanks for reading!
So, ever since the Evercold announcement, I've been leveling all my combat classes to level 100, having only previously done the tanks and SCH/SMN. So far I've gotten MNK, RPR and SAM to level 100 and I'm currently working on BRD, which is level 93 at the moment. I just briefly want to talk about how I am feeling about every job I've leveled in that period (so, not counting the tanks and SCH/SMN) and put them into a little tier list. This is absolutely completely subjective, but I just think it is fun. Also, in terms of the order of how I'm leveling them: RNG decided. That's why there will be some funky patterns on what jobs get done in what order. I will also say that I did pick MNK, RPR and SAM for the order to get a few of the melees done and have a more balanced RNG deciding how we move through the jobs. Anyway, let's start with the first of the 3: MNK!
Monk
So MNK is a job I've enjoyed and played ever since SB. While this is on a lot of fundamental degrees still the same MNK I love, it has also changed a lot from how fast it got with Greased Lightning stacks or how the different elemental tackles would change how you interact with stuff. This was a simple leveling from 90 to 100 task and wasn't all that interesting. Didn't help that MNK is basically a rotationally complete job at 50 at this point, though definitely at 60 and the level 90 to 100 additions aren't anything too interesting. Still, I have a good time with MNK, so a solid B tier. Solid leveling experience, fun to play. Next up, RPR!
Reaper
RPR is a job I basically didn't touch ever since it came out. I believe I got it to level 72 before I started leveling it to 100, so a good amount longer than MNK. That said… yeah, this was pretty fun. From 70 - 80, it was just alright. Regress is funny, but not super impactful. Gluttony felt better, but didn't change the job too much. And then we get Enshroud and suddenly the job makes sense. Afterwards, the good stuff just keeps piling up and it never stops. This is genuinely a really fun job with a good leveling experience. The only issue is that moment until level 80 and even then, I still think it is better than a lot of jobs that came out earlier in those levels as well. Honestly, a good A tier for both the fun of leveling and the fun of playing the job. Only issue is that bit before Enshroud and even then, that's a minor bump. Lastly, SAM!
Samurai
Let's get this out of the way first, since it has no influence on my rating: the 60 - 70 SAM job quests suck. The WoL becoming a cop is stupid, that revolutionary was stupid because writers can't write revolutionaries for shit since they would otherwise get too many "wait, he has a point tho" and it is a shame since the 50 - 60 SAM job quests were excellent.
Anyway, on to the actual leveling. I went from 60 - 100 and I was profoundly bored… until level 70 or so. 62 was already better because of the increased Kenki gain on combos, but 70 is when my enjoyment started increasing. Then around 80 I really started enjoying myself. Then at 86 my heart was shattered into tiny pieces because my lovely cone AoE was changed to a player based circle AoE. I'm so done with played based circle AoEs, they are so boring (tank main btw, give us the Overpower cone back). Regardless, then at 90, I was genuinely feeling like this was one of the most fun jobs in the game. All that to say… A tier. I can't put it into S tier, because I do remember that feeling of "UGGHHHHHHHHH" every time I went into a roulette during that 60 - 70 period. While it became better at 70 onward, it only really became good at 80. For me, that's too late for me to enjoy myself. However, that enjoyment was huge, so I am still happy to have done it. So yeah, A tier.
The actual tier list
And that's the post! Just a very brief discussion (and tier list) about jobs I'm leveling. Next time will be BRD, which should be somewhere later this week. For the order of jobs left: BRD, WHM, DNC, SGE, MCH, BLM, VPR, RDM, NIN, AST, DRG and lastly PCT. This will also be the order of posts coming out and not at a set schedule, since some of these jobs are low… (DNC is at 60). Thank you for reading!
The Final Fantasy XIV Flower Language Spreadsheet (Final Flowery XIV 4.0)
The Final Fantasy XIV Flower Language Spreadsheet is done.
If you write fanfics, roleplay, make fanart, or like flowers, I made a spreadsheet of (nearly) every flower in-game with its IRL flower and its flower language and fun facts that may be relevant to you.
The sheet also contains additional information, game description, fun facts, cultural relevancy, mythology (I tried very hard to find Greek stuff for all your Azem and ancients needs), along with where to find it in game and what patch/expac it was introduced (which is more relevant than you think for some of these).
I plan on adding more to it and keeping it updated as new flowers come out in game, adding more lore relevant commentary when needed. I have comments enabled on the spreadsheet so if you have anything to add, please right click the cell in question and leave a comment. I cannot promise I will be watching the comments on this like a hawk, but I will try. I know I missed some, especially in the Quests category. If you can help, I'd appreciate it.
This was a labor of love and desire for my previous version to be rebuilt into something better. The original was made because I needed something like this for a fanfiction I needed to write. I wanted the spreadsheet to be able to help more people than myself.
I hope it will help you create something beautiful.
Final Fantasy XIV Evercold Tank Speculation, Thoughts and Opinions!
So the FF14 team decided to have a Fan Fest on the day I was out celebrating my birthday with friends and they even dared to announce a tank job at the keynote. Ridiculous! They thought they could stop my speculation! Well, I will show them! >:(
But for real, new tank job announced and some other details announced for the tanks that does help us get somewhat of an understanding what it might be. Also, I will definitely be talking a bit about the stuff we've seen for tanks with the "Evolved Mode" gameplay, since I certainly have a bunch of thoughts there too. Let's get into it, starting with the new tank!
THE NEW TANK
So, the new jobs announced are a tank and a physical ranged job. For the sake of this post, I don't care about the physical ranged job, though I will say: I hope I enjoy it! I love Machinist, so I would love to have a second physical ranged to enjoy. As for our new tank, we have a few things to get into. First: the t-shirt hint.
Hey, it is that guy you got like once a week in trial roulette that you just bum rushed in a minute before it got made into a solo instance! Also, technically this could also be the physical ranged hint (nothing says that tanks are the only ones that are allowed shields, hell Beastmaster is a melee dps with one! ...Limited job, but still!), but I do think it is the tank for a reason we'll get to.
So our hint is Rhitathyn sas Arvina and "Guess who's back?" That doesn't give us too much to work with, especially since Yoshi-P mentioned that the new jobs will be FF14 original like Viper, Reaper, etc. That still doesn't mean it can't be inspired by things in Final Fantasy history, but it does mean that it won't be called anything that we're aware of. That does strike of a fair number of things. But what does it mean? Well, the biggest conclusion people have drawn is that the new tank will use dual shields like Rhitathyn. This doesn't seem unlikely with the Rhitathyn being used to show it... but... is that it? We don't have a potential thematic direction to pull in? Like, I guess GNB was also just teased with a gunblade on Thancred's back in the very first Shadowbringers trailer, but... again like this? We got Yoshi-P wearing a TMNT shirt because the TMNT are named after artists, so artist = PCT. And this is just dual shields?
But what if it's not just the weapon? Or... well, weapons I guess. What if that tagline that both Yoshi-P and Koji Fox pointed out may have something? What... if this is a revenant-esque job? Someone channeling the spirits of the dead to enhance their attacks, protect their allies and themselves? That may have a bit of overlap with Reaper, but it is a little more... necromancer instead of linked to the Void. "Guess who's back?" makes me think of someone that died and got brought back in some way, especially since Rhitathyn was killed when we fought against him. Plus it would make it not the third "guy who just wants to protect people" tank alongside PLD and GNB. So yeah, what about a spooky tank? Give it spooky spectral powers! ...It could also be calling back to Eminem's "Without Me." If it is... I have no clue what it could be.
Oh, and to talk about the reason why I'm 100% certain it will at least carry one shield I'll have to cut ahead into something about the new versions of jobs we're gonna be playing (or least have the option to): they talked about bringing sub roles in for tanks properly. So proper main tank and off tank roles. And... the division is interesting:
So PLD and our new tank are Main Tanks while WAR, DRK and GNB are all Off Tanks. This is very interesting, because historically this is accurate to the developer's intentions. PLD was supposed to be the main tank, while WAR and DRK were supposed to be off tanks. The meta in HW and SB made this the exact opposite, since PLD was bad in HW and it couldn't generate aggro worth a damn in ShB. GNB basically made this null and void, especially since ShB was the expansion tank stances died and the concept of tank divisions died with it, though there is still an argument that PLD was the best off tank since its abilities were better suited for off tanking. Regardless though, that is what they were trying to do with a return to this concept. Our new tank being intended to be a main tank that is similarly to PLD "skilled at taking direct damage" and has "actions to counter enemy attacks" gives me the big impression that they want this new tank to have some sort of shield. Whether that will be dual shield, just a single shield as the weapon or a weapon + shield.
Aside from that, that is basically all we have for the new tank. Probably, hopefully it is the job announced at Berlin in 3 months, but otherwise not much to say. Let's go into Evolved Mode!
EVOLVED MODE
So this is the big one. They basically announced that they are taking a wildly different direction for all 21 currently existing jobs via the form of "Evolved Mode". The person who did a lot (if not all) the PvP job reworks has worked on it and it is... interesting and potentially very good. Potentially is a big keyword, but what we've seen of PLD, I'm hyped for the tanks at the very least. Let's take a look at the PLD hotbars they showed off. Also, just immediately: I'll get to my opinions at the end of this section.
So... that is a huge different. Literally cut skills in half... and a bit even, since the PC hotbar doesn't show Iron Will and Intervene for some reason. But yeah, we'll basically be going to about 1 full hotbar of job unique skills and then a few more role skills. Some skills are further getting pruned, like Bulwark being gone again in Evolved Mode, though also things like Goring Blade, Holy Circle, Total Eclipse, Prominence and Circle of Scorn. Other things got changed around and combined into certain buttons.
For example, our basic combo is now 1 button that just goes through the attacks by using it, similar to how it works in PvP. Or how Holy Spirit is both Holy Spirit and Clemency in one button that changes whether you have an enemy or an ally targeted. Hell, Holy Spirit is also Confiteor when you get what we currently know as the Divine Might buff that seems to last forever, plus that same buff makes Clemency into High Clemency. Similarly, Intervene is now also Cover with an ally targeted gap closer. Oh, and the enemy targeted version now no longer has damage attached to it. Holy Sheltron is now both that and Intervention depending on whether you target yourself or someone else. It's a lot. For the slides to show them off:
In general, they seem to be pushing this new system, since all new jobs from Evercold onward are only gonna be in this new style. The currently available jobs will be able to swap between both Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode, with Reborn acting as the current version of the job... minus raid buffs. They have said that they are removing the two minute meta, so no more offensive raid buffs! Also, we will still get new stuff in Reborn Mode from the expansion, it isn't just the exact same without changes from here on out.
They also showed off PLD's Evolved Mode a bunch. Let's go over it bullet point style:
Firstly, they showed off the basic combo being on 1 button, including a new finisher named "Divine Authority" instead of the regular Royal Authority. This proc'd something called Expiacion Avowed, which made a button glow up for 30 seconds that allowed Expiacion to be used.
Then they showed off that "Divine Justice" is Holy Spirit and Clemency combined into one button that depends on the context of whether it targets an enemy or an ally/yourself. Holy Spirit still heals yourself.
Right after they showed the Requiescat/Request cat/Confiteor/Confetti/Imperator/Blade Combo. Requiescat/Imperator will now give us a buff of Divine Might, which is an infinitely lasting buff that gives us an empowered Divine Justice. On the beta UI of our job guage we saw that a stack of Honor was taken for it, that it had a recharge of 40 seconds and that you could have 2 stacks of Honor in total. All of the Blade Combo still heals yourself, though damage might be distributed slightly differently, seeing as Blade of Honor did a lot less than Blade of Valor.
Up next, they showed off Holy Sheltron applying a buff called Surcoat of Satisfaction that wore off and got replaced by Surcoat of Answer. When the PLD got hit by the enemy with Surcoat of Answer, a button lit up (that looks like GNB's Continuation, but that's work in progress for you) that made them do the skill Answering Strike, our "counter" skill, and gave them a buff of the same name. Interestingly, Answering Strike's buff icon looks like Knight's Benediction, the regen from the current version of Holy Sheltron, but this is notably NOT a regen effect, as we don't see the numbers pop up that a regen will always do. So that's already a notable nerf to our healing.
Right after they showed what happens if the PLD gets hit during Surcoat of Satisfaction, where they get to do Satisfaction instead, which is a stronger version of Answering Strike. Similarly, it also applied a buff called Satisfaction that also similarly uses the icon of Knight's Benediction and isn't a regen.
Holy Sheltron also eats up a bar on our job gauge. This one is the Defence gauge and regens for 1 stack every 20 seconds and similarly can hold 2 of them. Also, we have a Crest on our job gauge. This is just to show which counter you have access to, Satisfaction or Answering Strike
Then, in a flurry of things they showed off, they showed that the empowered Divine Justice version of Holy Spirit is actually Confiteor, which also still heals us.
Next, they showed Passage of Arms, which gives us a buff called Gathering Round, which grants us access to the follow up of Passage of Arms: Round Table. This is an AoE heal.
Then they showed Divine Veil, which is the same except it doesn't heal anymore.
They showed Hallowed Ground and Provoke, both of which look about the same.
Then they showed Intervene (or as it seems to be renamed to for the enemy targeted version, Intercession). This no longer deals damage and instead just has text flying up from the enemy called Intercession, meaning that it most likely works like DRK and GNB's current gap closers of no damage, but increased enmity.
Then they showed Shield Lob, which seems to be AoE by the look of the circle that spawned because of it. They also, right after, showed that Shield Bash is on the same button as Shield Lob, just being distance based instead. This is also an AoE, one that at least stuns the creature targeted by the PLD. Might make it interesting to swap targets between each use of Shield Bash if it doesn't stun everything the AoE hits and just the target of your attack.
Next up they showed that empowered Divine Justice targeting yourself or an ally gives you Full Clemency, a stronger version of Clemency.
Up next, they showed that Intervene now works on party members. You jump to an ally and then put Covered on them for 4 seconds and get Cover yourself.
Afterwards they showed that Holy Sheltron can now also target party members, giving them the buffs of Shield of Satisfaction, which falls off and gives Shield of Answer. It is unsure if this also triggers the counter.
Then they show off Guardian. Nothing has visibly changed about Guardian.
Lastly, they showed off that Provoke and Shirk now share the same button. Provoke when you target an enemy, Shirk when you target a party member.
So that's a whole lot of PLD info. We're still missing a few pieces, like "what are we getting in levels 101 - 110" and whether Shield of Satisfaction/Answer will also proc the counter, but we already have a good grasp on PLD.
Now, the opinion corner and I have to say: ...this is looking kind of fire. I do have some gripes and let's start with those first
One button combos make me actively sad. I don't think it is an immediate deal breaker, but unless PvE content ends up being way more engaging and active the whole way through, I think that part will get very boring, very quick for me personally. I really hope that they will add the Action Change System to allow us to split them up in separate buttons. If that's the case, I think I'm very down for this system, even if I make it technically harder for myself. Though, I also have to admit, it also depends on how much down time of just the filler combo there is whether the one button basic combo will feel worse. Plus, maybe Expiacion will already break it up, so I'm going in with a positive mind.
The tank split is incredibly interesting and I potentially think it could work great, but there are obvious concerns whether WAR, DRK and GNB will be good enough to main tank still and whether PLD and our new tank aren't active hindrances as off tanks. PLD at least does seem to have a bunch of tools to mitigate damage to other people between Clemency, Divine Veil, Passage of Arms, Round Table, Cover and placed Holy Sheltrons/Intervention, which isn't unlike the current kit, but I think that is interesting since mitigating party damage is the off tank role's thing. So unless WAR, DRK and GNB are just absolutely cracked at mitigating damage and/or the numbers on PLD's mitigations are down in the gutter when used on other targets, I wonder if this distinction will even matter and if not, why they bothered.
AoE potentially looks dreadfully boring, on PLD at least. It currently is looking like it is just spamming Shield Lob/Shield Bash, your counter whenever you get it proc'd and the Imperator Combo. That is harsh from Total Eclipse Combo, Holy Circle, Circle of Scorn, Expiacion (only way we saw it being used was after a regular combo from a proc) and Imperator Combo from the current version of PLD. That is definitely one angle I hope they improve in, even if it does seem fun to potentially have to switch targets for Shield Bashes again if you don't have a WHM in the party (or assuming Holy lost its stun).
Now for the positives:
OH MY GOOD GOLLY GOSH, PLD HAS AN ALLY TARGETED DASH. I WANTED THAT SINCE STORMBLOOD BASICALLY, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT PLD SHOULD'VE ALWAYS HAD. REST IN PEPPERONI INTERVENE, NO MORE DAMAGE FOR YOU
PLD's new rotation looks cool. I'm still a little concerned it is a bit burst heavy and would like it to be more about sustained damage, like it used to be, but at least going through the motions of this rotation looks infinitely more interesting than the current rotation, especially since there are decisions to be made! You can save up your Imperator Combos for times when the boss is out of melee range, only using them to keep them off cooldown so you're not losing damage, or you can just spend both of them right away for damage phases. It's so cool to have that flexibility, even in a bigger way than before
The new animations look so GOOD. Divine Authority is so sick, even if it does remind me of a Ninja animation. Answering Strike is great looking and then Satisfaction truly brings the satisfaction to a new level for that counter. Full Clemency and Round Table look cool too. The big jump to someone to cover them is a little funny, but still great
I freaking love counters and I'm glad we're back to them, even if I will miss Shield Swipe just a little bit, assuming we can't unlock it as an action skin. It was a goofy animation, but I liked it damn it
THE JOB GAUGE FINALLY LOOKS POTENTIALLY USEFUL AND NOT LIKE A WASTE OF SPACE ON MY HUD, EVEN IF IT IS JUST A GLORIFIED TIMER
I really do like the potential of splitting the tanks into main tank and off tank to give them more defined roles and/or abilities
THE COVER ALLY TARGETED DASH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
So yeah, you can say I'm a fan. Even with my small concerns/annoyances, this is an incredibly strong showing right off the bat for tanks imho, but we'll see when we get to see one of the off tanks and especially when we get to the live letter with the job action trailer and that will show things off more thoroughly.
CONCLUSION
The future is looking bright, honestly. A big part of how fun tanks will be during the endgame is the fight design, but I am confident they are able to make it work. Consistently has Dawntrail been some of the best Normal level content we've ever gotten with easily the best set of Normal trials, 8 man and 24 man raids. So, while there is reason to be a bit apprehensive, so far so good and I very much look forward to how Evercold ends up shaking out. Thank you for reading!
Quick follow up, since there were some more details in the dev panel that I initially overlooked.
Divine Veil has gone to a 120 second cooldown instead of the current 90.
Riot Blade and Expiacion no longer restores MP.
None of the PLD spells, including Clemency, use MP anymore.
So, thoughts about that is that Divine Veil being nerfed unfortunately makes sense. Having 2 ways to reduce damage raid wide is huge, so making one just a bit weaker to have the other tanks be able to keep up… yeah, unfortunate but it tracks, especially since PLD is not (entirely) meant to be king of party mitigation anymore due to being a MT.
Riot Blade and Expiacion no longer restoring MP and spells no longer requiring MP go hand in hand and I'm divided ngl. Why? Because while I can absolutely acknowledge that PLD MP basically didn't matter at this point, it was still a little bit of a limiter. Especially on Clemency, which seems kind of insane if this goes into live. I will say that I do expect that this will be changed back, at least for Clemency. It does make recovery on PLD a lot easier, though, so I guess it does make some sense to do this. Very 50/50 on this, I would rather want (some) tanks and melees have an MP bar that matters to your gameplay instead of just entirely not.
The meta in HW and SB made this the exact opposite, since PLD was bad in HW and it couldn't generate aggro worth a damn in SB.
Well... Final Fantasy XIV has made me meet a lot of my current friends (@peculiarmarsu Hi Rau o/), so I guess that's one. I can't really think of anything else, though.

I game more often on PC, but I actually still prefer playing on consoles. I just think PC has a lot of annoying troubleshooting you have to do that console doesn't have to bother with, both for better and worse. I'm lazy :V
