I Was Never Good with Endings.

The room was silent, tired eyes strain as they stare at the message broadcast over a flickering screen.

‘You Died.’

No.

All this time, every hour spent ignoring aching muscles and a lingering migraine- was that it? Is this all that his work had led to?

This wasn’t how it was supposed to end.

Derek was not by his side as he spawned back in the game, the fleeting sight of armour disappearing behind a platform played over and over in Avery’s mind. He was so close. He was right there.

How long did he sit in place, frozen? His hands only willed themselves to wipe the tears after they started to dry on his skin. The darkness of his room crawled across his desk, escaping the sunlight which crept in to greet the new year. The warmth danced across cold fingertips as Avery moved his character forward, stepping down into the cave where it had all started. The same stairs, the same chest and the same diamonds and redstone present within.

The book.

He pulled it from its item slot, fumbling with mechanical keys to open the pages as his screen lit up brighter than before.

“No…” he whispered to the empty walls, clicking through to the next page.

He clicked again.

Again.

Nothing.

The pages were empty
