Just a random songfic thought for fanfic writers

How do you deal with writing songfics for fandoms where in the source material, Earth is the main setting and you use songs made long after the canon in the source material ended? For series that are grounded and in "real life" like Bones or CSI that ended many years ago, do you just come up with post-canon stories or you do AUs and you adjust the timeline to make the songs fit? What if that song was released late in the source's run, but the content fits so well with early storylines?
