some people were asking for a actual and i can never pass up an opportunity to procrastinate so here’s just a couple of things i always need to remind myself of…now back to my paper :(
listen you can say “capitalism makes living with adhd/autism really difficult and in a non-capitalist society these things would not be so hard and neurodivergent people would thrive better” without saying “adhd/autism are the biproduct of capitalism and everything you think is a symptom is really just being unable to cope with capitalism” like…… don’t erase neurodivergence and pretend it’s just a social phenomenon.
saying “actually neurodivergence is just made up by a social structure i oppose” is not as progressive as you think it is
I’ve tried to explain this SO many times.
my adhd and disability combined leave me functioning somewhat outside of capitalism. that is, i can’t work, I’m fully dependent.
without the stress of daily functioning within a capitalistic structure (i spend a most of my time doing whatever the hell i want,) i still suffer the effects of my adhd A Lot.
my adhd causes insomnia, and my lack of sleep severely impacts my mental and physical health. i have rsd, which severely impacts my social life. i have executive dysfunction, which even without work and schedules, makes my life absolute hell, by impairing my ability to feed myself, keep my spaces clean, and generally take care of myself to an extent that without outside care, i would be extremely unhealthy. none of these things are the product of capitalism. the impacts exist outside of capitalism.
in a perfect, leftist world, i would struggle the exact same amount to sleep, eat, have a social life, and be healthy.
to believe my adhd is a product of capitalism is either accusing my symptoms of being made up, or severely underestimating the scope of the effects.
treating adhd like it’s just an impairment to productivity is a capitalistic misrepresentation, and has no business in leftist arguments.
Yes, it’s hard to focus on my day job with ADHD.
But it’s equally hard to focus on things that have nothing to do with the exchange of labor for money. Cooking for myself, writing for D&D games, calling a plumber. You know… ordinary life stuff.
Part of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD is that the symptoms impact multiple areas of your life. Even if we didn’t have to work 40+ hours a week to feed and house ourselves, neurodivergence would still impact our lives.

do you ever have the sudden realization on how lonely you are and its just like
Kiki Layne promoting Gucci in 2019
this week in I Am Very Smart: having enough money to go to the opera, museums and concerts correlates with having enough money for food, shelter and basic health needs
They controlled for socioeconomic factors though! The people who conducted this study knew that people with lots of money to attend the opera were also more likely to be able to afford basic necessities, so they controlled for it in their analysis. The fun thing about statistics is that you can control for different confounding factors so you can look at the effects of one independent variable (opera or whatever) on the dependent variable (mortality). Part of being critical of potential biases is actually reading the article and knowing what to look for.
In addition to that very good point about controlling for socioeconomic factors, the article says a single museum or concert per year makes a difference. Most cities have free community concerts (some even have free opera performances!) and museums that are either free, pay-what-you-want, or at least have specific days/times during which they are free or at a significantly reduced cost. Many libraries (which are free) provide free museum passes to card holders. In fact, the article quotes a museum worker who works at a free art museum in Baltimore.
If you actually read the article you would also read that educators are excited about this study because it provides evidence that the arts should be made more accessible financially - by restoring arts programs in the public schools, for example.
Also, “Advocates said the study was also a reminder of how critical it is for the arts to be more accessible to Americans of all incomes.” Linking to the article so it’s easier for people to get to cos it’s a good read.

"You are no longer licensed to use the software," Adobe told them.
Friendly reminder that GIMP does pretty much everything Photoshop does, and it’s 100% free. Fuck DRM and the license culture, we have plenty of open source options available to us as a consumer.
Lightworks is a freeware video editor on par with Premiere
Blender is an excellent freeware 3D renderer, possibly better than After Effects
Lightzone to replace Lightroom
Inkscape to replace Illustratr
Audacity to replace Audition (I also received a free version of Pro Tools with my Scarlett Solo audio interface)
If Adobe is going to be greedy shitheads, then fuck ‘em. Don’t use their stuff. Freeware can be just as good, if not better, than Adobe CC.

I cannot imagine what the actual legal argument is for slapping a felony on a trans healthcare provider, ESPECIALLY when they’re consulting patients that are OVER the legal age of 18.
The state wants to control everyone’s bodies. Smash the state.
Meet OK Senator Warren Hamilton. Hamilton just introduced a state bill to make it a criminal felony (3yrs to life) to provide life-saving gender affirming medical care to oklahomans under 21. Its first reading is scheduled for 2/1/2021. You can reach his office at (405) 521-5604.
Here’s the Senate Bill. It incriminates not only medical practitioners, but individuals if they choose to pursue HRT or GRS. They threaten jail time for not only giving but receiving hormones. Think about that. The invasion of privacy and personal freedom is appalling.
PLEASE consider contacting Hamilton and rebuking SB676.

In the original myths, Sirens offered the lure of knowledge, not sex or lust.
Update this by having modern Sirens attract prey by offering students free textbooks for their course.
While the news that Ted Cruz decided to take his family on a vacation in Cancun during the worst climate disaster Texas has seen...in a while is not SURPRISING, it does illustrate an important point.
Climate disasters will not affect us all equally. Climate change will hurt the global poor first and worst. While floods and droughts and heat waves and ice storms will ravage the world, the richest and most powerful will still be able to hop on a plane to whatever corner of the planet is still habitable, or go off in their space arc, or hide away on their Mars colony run by Indentured servants.
Do not forget this. Those in power have so much less to lose by doing nothing about climate change. They can afford to let us burn and freeze and drown if it saves them some pennies along the way.
That’s Louis Rossman, a repair technician and YouTuber, who went viral recently for railing against Apple. Apple purposely charges a lot for repairs and you either have to pay up or buy a new device. That’s because Apple withholds necessary tools and information from outside repair shops. And to think, we were just so close to change.

This guy inspired me to repair my own macbook. First of all, you should know that I am not… like, I have to look up HOW to look up what my computer specifications are. Tech, that ware either soft or hard, is not a subject in which I experience comfort or competence. But my puppy peed on my keyboard, and I asked the apple store, or the fucking mac cafe, or the godsdamn Computer House Chill Zone or whatever cute ass name they have for their bullshit store, and they said it would be TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLARS TO REPLACE MY KEYBOARD. I’m not even exaggerating.
So I asked the internet, well how hard IS it to repair? And I saw this guy’s video, and while I am no techie, I AM fueled by spite, so I was all “oh, they do that shit on purpose specifically so they can charge me $1200 bucks or make me buy a new computer hunh? FUCK THEM” and I bought all the tools I needed for about $25 and I bought all the parts I needed for about another $25 and I watched a few tutorial videos, and I replaced my own keyboard.
So, once you are doing the actual deed, it becomes pretty obvious that they are finding creative ways to make this much harder than it has to be on purpose. On thing that stood out to me is, instead of all the tiny screws being the same size, there are about two dozen very slightly different sizes. They could easily be all the same size, or like, two sizes at most, but no.
These mother fuckers will take a panel that screws into place and they’ll use a different size screw for each corner. They are so close that you almost cannot tell them apart visually, but they each will only screw into the matching corner. Like, it’s a pretty clear “fuck you” to anyone trying to do repairs.
anyway, this guy is also fueled by spite, and doing holy work, and I have mad respect
This is awesome. Man is doing good ass deeds 24/7 because he’s giving people control.
How dare you not leave a link to his channel, this guy is the savior of the modern world.
