Why are we so afraid of the quiet seasons as Christians? Why do we get caught up in thinking that our lives need to be go-go-go, high after high and praise point after praise point? I don’t know about you, but it’s not the spectacular wins and proud mountain top moments that have drawn me closest to Christ –– but the moments of painful, heart wrenching, gut aching stretching that got me to where I am today. The silent pruning and cleansing seasons not only grew me, but matured my faith and understanding of who He really is, and helped me to grasp both the concept and application of His grace. It was the months of no clear direction, yet knowing I needed to persevere. It was the days of praying and hearing nothing but ‘wait’ as I sought after a word from The Holy Spirit — pleading with Him to teach me, show me, lead me, and yet again, hearing nothing but ‘wait.’ It’s not the constant favour that draws me to Him, but the never ending provision of transformation. Following Jesus (both historically and presently) was never, and will never be intended to be a sugar coated journey filled with all play and no work; with everything handed out, shared and evenly and on our own terms.. It’s about perseverance, faith in the unseen and belief in the unknown. It’s about locking your eyes on the heart and hands of the maker, and trusting that even when things don’t seem to be filled, overflowing and running over in your life; even when you haven’t felt God move in two, four or six months — that He is still at work, and never ceased doing a good work in your life. It’s about holding onto the towel, and not throwing it in. It’s about discerning when to loosen your grip, release the reigns and simply trust that when you feel completely oblivious to His answers and steps for your life; He is calling you to stay, remain and wait. Wait for Jesus in the silence. Don’t run from the blank spaces, the muted moments or the seemingly empty seasons. Find your place in the stillness, and choose to remain until you are capable of grasping, conceiving and comprehending precisely and exactly where Jesus is, and what He’s trying to teach you within it.
