There it was.                 Finally, Dorian had broken down the walls                 of terror and heartbreak that had been                  build moments before his arrival.                                                            The little blonde girl smiled.

                      “—you’d do that for me?”

                                  The offered hand moved to her shoulder,                                  giving it a soft squeeze                                  -- one to comfort and assure.

                                  “Of course. Anything for you, Little Bird.                                                                    Anything."

Her eyes remained big, even as he glanced down at her.                  Her heart still hurt…         “—what about until then?”

                                   “Well. . .                                          until then. . .” 

He paused to allow that persistent smile to appear on his face, a hand rising to be hold outward to the little blonde. An offering. 

           “Will you allow me to be your knight in shining armor?"

                             So don’t let me                                  leave you.                  You’re all that keeps me going.

Her face remained glum          but even under the smoke                        they still seemed to glitter.

"Why me?         —I’m little…”

A smile tugged at his lips, not from amusement but out of need to pull one from her.

                               “You won’t always be.                        One day you’ll be big and strong;                     --and I’ll teach you how to defend yourself.                             No one will pick on you then."

                   Hey -- Hey. . . look at me.                    I’m still here, aren’t I?                    Haven’t gone anywhere yet.

                   We’re still together.

With his head on her head, she moved back behind him, tucking herself away in one smooth motion. Each word she listened to carefully to him— she hadn’t seen Dorian mad in a very long time.                                    She was glad he wasn’t cross with her. 

The other turned and walked away,mumbling words about the stupid kid 

                         ”Big Bird—                                   Why do they all pick on me?”

Dorian didn’t allow his eyes to stray from the other patient’s form until they had turned the corner and thus, ceased to be a hazard to the little girl.

         Her quiet words softened his features and he moved towards her to where he could lower to her level.

                   “They pick on you because they’re bullies."

       You know how emotional I am.                            —Asshole.

I know, I know.  [he pulls her in close, tucking her head under his jaw]

         But you’re getting out of here, don’t forget that.

"He’s right," she nods, popping her head out from behind him, "I’m little, pick on someone your own size."

         Dorian pressed a palm onto the crown of the small girl’s head as if to assure her that she was safe with him. With narrowed eyes, he sized up the other patient, one that did wrong by picking on Addy.

                       “I’d suggest you leave.

                                              --else you lose all your fucking teeth."

Shit. I was just voicing the truth.

Big Bird! -she releases Ari’s hand and zooms towards him in a beeline- Big Bird, this is Ari, she’s going to take me trick or treating, and she’s the one I drew in the picture with us.

-Her eyes followed Addy as she ran to the large boy standing on the other side of the room. Hesitant to say anything she crossed her arms over her chest- So we meant Big Bird as in a Cassowary, not the big yellow street friend.

Casso-- what?  [he shakes his head at the unfamiliar word and instead puts all attention on Addy once more]  Oh, this is her? I was wondering who that was.  [his gaze flickers to the older girl and he gives her a small smile]  Hi.

[he offers a hand]  Dorian.

I always do that… I think.. -she nods as she turns a corner, desplaying a row of a few children’s drawings, oen standing out th at was obviously the one she drew. Happily she pointed to it- That one!

[dmiller-isakiller]

Doesn’t hurt to remind you.  [his eyes run over each drawing and land on the one she pointed out as her own, he lets out an excited noise]  Addy! This is wonderful!  [he moves to lean close to it, examining it with a wide smile]

-She excitedly takes his hand and begins to lead him in the direction of her classroom- Maybe my teacher is still there, and you can meet her. She’s not very nice sometimes, but don’t tell her I told you that.

It’ll be our secret. Adults aren't often nice, because they’re so boring and strict. But they mean well; mo--some of them, at least.

                 Mind your p’s and q’s, eh?

-the little girl giggles and points towards where her classroom was- I think so!

Let’s go then!  [he gently sets her back on her feet and offers a hand, meaning for her to lead them there]

  Well let’s go find him then! -she grabs Ari’s hand and starts to pull her up-

-She laughs and shakes her head- Biiirdie.
