7. Dawn Shanks & Christy Pelton | The D.C. Disloyalty Program Starbucks is not only raking it in on its gift cards. It also benefits from its loyalty card program. A microtrend bucking these ubiquitous cards involves indie coffee bars banding together to offer a “disloyalty card.” Instead of encouraging repeat visits to one establishment, they incent people to visit multiple coffee shops. The latest city to get in on the trend is Washington D.C., thanks to local baristas Dawn Shanks and Christy Pelton, who with half a dozen local cafés created the D.C. Disloyalty Program. Patronize all six to earn your free coffee reward.

Coffee Shops In D.C. Form Alliance Against Starbucks With 'Disloyalty' Card A group of Washington D.C. coffee shops are lashing out against Starbucks with a "disloyalty card."

Hey all. We are in awe of the reception of the card. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm. In a few articles, we've noticed mention to "lashing out against starbucks" and this is certainly not the spirit of the card. DC Disloyalty Coffee Program

DC's coffee community is a friendly, thriving one; area baristas have fun serving customers and each other. A scene like this deserves not a loyalty card but a disloyalty card, which encourages people to visit different neighborhoods, try coffee from different roasters each shop presents on their menus, and meet some awesome coffee professionals.

So pick up a card at a participating shop (it's a limited run, so get one quickly!) Visit all the shops on the back of the card, and collect a stamp at each with your purchase. Once you've got a full card, redeem it for a free drink at any of the shops listed.

At any point in your coffee adventure, send love, pictures and videos to us through tumblr, twitter or Instagram with the #dcdisloyal tag.

Two final thoughts: Participating shops have the freedom to define what constitutes a free drink. In the spirit of the disloyalty program, please respect each shop's parameters.

This card is by no means a definitive list of the best coffee in DC, ever, merely the first six shops approached in a program we hope has a second round. We're sorry to leave out some great places, and sorry if we missed your favorite haunt.
