Disney Channel, We need to Talk

(content warning sexual violence) My series on the Disney Channel has been really fun where I delve into shows produced for this generation of children and preteens. However I recently came across a disturbing story concerning a Disney Channel star that shook me to the core. 

The alleged sexual abuse of at the time, minor Ricky Garcia, an actor and musician by talent manager Joby Harte and others for years during his adolescence. (source USA Today) Of course, I am by no means  naive to the sexual and other abuse that goes on in the industry, nor to the exploitation of child stars resulting in their rebellious streaks e.g. Britney, Lindsay etc. After all, we never truly know what these kids go through, but the allegations from Garcia and his family are not only heartbreaking and disgusting, it's absolutely earth shattering to even comprehend!. 

In the time of #MeToo, Garcia came forward to share his experiences that from starting age 12, he was repeatedly drugged and raped by Harte and his companions who passed him around as a “play thing”. I won't go into detail because this is the stuff that physically and mentally angers me that I just want to cry. The shame and confusion he felt and continues to endure, when now at only 21 can he begin to heal and deservedly, get on with his life. All I could think of was Michael Jackson's accusers whose story was told in the 2019 documentary "Leaving Neverland" and were interviewed by Oprah. Many believed they fabricated the entire story, I still don't know what to think, and why part of me wants Garcia to be making it up. 

I came across Garcia on the show "Best Friends Forever", not particularly good due to its weird, inconsistent time travel premise and poor writing, but just as I was starting to enjoy it..I found Garcia's story. Garcia gained initial fame on the X factor, where Simon Cowell placed him with two alike young, teenage boy singers to create "Forever in Your Mind" who he stayed with. Just to think of what he was going through during this time, whilst also growing into an adult and entering a new industry. Garcia didn't know if this was normal behaviour and probably couldn't talk to anyone about it, once again enabling rearing its ugly head. Were the band members also subject to this sexual exploitation? Its hard to believe they only targeted Garcia! Have they come forward and said anything?

The Michael Jackson documentary explains the perceived negligence of parents who are fame hungry or excited their kid is being given a shot, that they let their kids be taken away by those in power. Garcia claims Harte took them on a song writing retreat where the abuse continued. Finding out that you basically led your child into the gallows is just incomprehensible beyond words. 

A major event described by Garcia was at a party hosted at Chris Pratt and Anna Faris' house, where he was intoxicated, taken into a bedroom and raped. Now, I am not a Chris Pratt fan at all, but I don't think he's a bad guy and have no reason to believe they orchestrated or had any knowledge of this happening. But it indicates a higher up, Hollywood elite controlling and hiding activities including a suspected pedophile ring. Imagine knowing that happened in your house! Will they have to testify in court? 

As more stories are exposed (though not getting as much media attention as they should), the pedophile ring is becoming more apparent (Epstein, Weinstein...what more evidence do you need!?) Bella Thorne, a Disney star of this same era, also claims she was molested as a child star, it could be unrelated but she was still part of the same IP! Talent managers and executives like Harte continue to work with adults and children who are none the wiser, get off scot-free because of this secret corrupt elite and ineffective court system. Whilst victims like Garcia have to wait months or years for a court date, if then it may get thrown out. Enough is enough! 

Garcia’s tale really hit me, I can't bare to watch any Disney Channel shows right now and thus boycotting. Garcia's and other stories need to be heard. His was so recent and we know it continues to happen...

What truly makes me sad is looking at these kids doing what they love to do, and not being able to enjoy it because I worry of the horrors they may be experiencing behind the scenes. It sounds melodramatic, but I thoroughly enjoy getting lost in the nonsensical and low stakes worlds of Disney shows and DCOMs, and hope more is being done to protect them. I understand that Disney may not be the source and whether Garcia’s accusations is true or not, Disney needs to prevent anything like this from ever happening! Implement internal changes from the top down that are continually reviewed and updated with parties across all levels.Get rid of old sh***y executives, give voices to diverse management and staff to communicate openly and address these events that are not taboo! We know CEO Bob Chapek, doesn't care about the brand or legacy, only the shareholders. Get off your ass, care about the people in your organization and take action to protect them!

I’m ending the Disney show shout-out series with a bit of outfielder; newer release “Sydney to the Max”. It’s a wholehearted show about middle-school aged Sydney (Ruth Righi) and her single father Max (Ian Reed Kesler), paired with flashbacks to Max (Jackson Dollinger) at Sydney’s age in the 90s, and his adventures with his best friend and single mother. 

I literally only watched this show because the font style of the titles is identical to “Saved by the Bell.”(SBTB) Like seriously, I thought it was a spin-off from The Max restaurant because it looks exactly the same! (Though this theory wouldn’t make sense as SBTB isn’t a Disney property and the spin-off is set to release in 2020.) Anyway, after my confusion subsided and I realized that Dad Max did not attend BaySide High, I found the show to be delightful and fun, light on the drama and has some good jokes. 

Sydney and her best friend Olive (Ava Kolker) are perfect, two peas in a pod, they would do anything for each other and their relationship is typical of girls their age: sweet. It’s nice to see it juxtaposed against Max and his best friend Leo (Christian J. Simon) who are the scene stealers for me. Like stereotypical boys they are mischievous, live in the present with no sense of planning, and are predictably shown to be much more immature than the girls. I think young Max is just adorable, unlike Sydney he is a slacker and he constantly tries to pull fast ones by his mother to get out of school work etc. Leo is an outgoing and quirky kid, he is a talented dancer and provides the most jokes. Although the boys are best buddies, they are not joint at the hip; Max is an avid skateboarder and Leo has his dance crew. Sydney too realizes her passions differ from her friend Olive’s and she joins a fencing team; encouraging young audiences to follow their passions outside of friends. Honestly all the kids are just good, which doesn’t really give the show anywhere to go. 

Nonetheless, we have children’s TV alum Caroline Rhea at double speed playing both a younger and older version of herself (Max’s Mum and Sydney’s Grandma). I feel like she gets the most screen time! It’s rewarding to see her transition between a stressed, hardworking, uptight single mother to the carefree Grandma who can enjoy her Granddaughter as she watches Max raise his child as she did him.

Of course, heart strings are pulled in Max being a widower and Sydney not having a mother. I am yet to see the Christmas episode which explores her mother’s passing, but the theme of loss bathes the show in a positive light reflecting that though Sydney misses her Mum, she knows she is always with her. As Sydney is part of a close knit family, she never feels she is missing out and as a result, Sydney is a well adjusted kid. She is mixed race, but this is not addressed as an issue, rather it reflects modern day America and inclusion. 

In parallel, young and adult Max deal with “Daddy’ issues as his absentee father (Thomas F. Wilson AKA Biff!) tries to re-enter his life and Sydney tries to rekindle them with mixed results. Most definitely at the heart of the show is the bond between Sydney and Max; he trusts his daughter so much that when she does mess up she receives worse punishment or “the disappointed” card...a lesson to all for being such a good kid. 

Clearly “Sydney to the Max” plays on nostalgia for Disney, getting parents and their kids to watch together; comparing the ancient 90s to the modern era: Oh yes, we actually used something called a TELEPHONE!” I’ll give Disney credit, it’s smart, but if anything they could have played it up even more than just showing the 90s vs 2020s set decors. However, the eras are not the main focus of the show, it is the relationships. I definitely want to see more of the 90s and more of young Max and Leo! 

It’s strange that the father-daughter pre-teen flashbacks never exactly line-up; aside from the “Shaving” (legs vs face) episode. Then again, keeping the comparisons more vague and letting them have separate adventures with similar themes is probably more strategic as we would likely get bored of the predictable premise. “Sydney to the Max” is fun and if you are close to your family, it makes you feel warm inside… but it’s nothing groundbreaking.

The Suite Life on Deck - PART 2

Boundaries in “The Suite Life on Deck” (SLOD) are pushed into the imaginary realm with episode themes including going into space, the Bermuda Triangle and ghost tales.  Although most turn out to be dreams, the fact they even included these storylines are fun! What is impressive because of it’s ambitiousness though, is questionable in it’s execution in the attempt to educate their audience about world cultures; often relying on stereotypes. A few that come to mind is Cody and Zack visiting a renown Swami in India who fleeces them for money and is an undercover operation for a call centre. Also, in Paris a handsome teenage boy tries to seduce Bailey and the chef of a famous restaurant is rude, refuses to speak English or serve Americans.

I thoroughly enjoy the wonder that is London Tipton and her character arc from her days at the Tipton Hotel. The staple “dumb Disney” character, it is certain that London did not start out as dimwitted as her original incantation, and as time went on she seemed to have lost more brain cells; completely transforming into a cartoon. No doubt this is due to the talented Brenda Song’s over the top physicality and commitment (who sadly may have gotten lost and caused her damage in real life). London is undoubtedly the most tragic and deepest character with so many layers that we want to delve deeper into. Unlike the twins, who too are a product of a broken home and did not grow up in a typical home environment, they seem pretty fine and their issues are resolved succinctly…but maybe the lesson here is that they have each other to rely on. Whereas London has no one really. She never sees her mother or father; the latter only providing his love through money. These very real issues are addressed in “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” (Suite Life), but by the time we come to SLOD we know her deal and at this point she’s been pushed over the edge. As a result, London is not a nice person and her actions encourage a “mean girl” behaviour for the audience. Unlike in Suite Life where Maddie consistently shuts her down, here when Bailey retaliates, no one takes her seriously and the heiress suffers no consequences. Unfortunately in SLOD, London is less of a whole character and her behaviour is not justified. Creators of the show are relying on the fact that we have watched her Suite Life and she is excused because deep, deep down we know she has a heart and cares.

London is a talented business woman capable of learning, when she does try, showing that she has a bright future. She has compassion; confronting her father to stop him from demolishing Bailey’s family farm. As I have followed the plight of London, her graduation scene with Mr Moseby, who is basically her father, was the real scene stealer and made me cry. Having Mr Moseby and Mrs Tutweiller be the only adults that believed in her was special and relatable for many students. (when that one teacher sees something in you). I was not interested in Zack or Cody and don’t really care what they do next, but London in a way had a real hero progression. 

In an attempt to appeal to a wider audience or just be a franchise adventure for the Sprouse twins, Disney produced a TV movie of the SLOD before it’s finale. The movie, about an evil scientist trying to take over the world using twin telekinetics (or something like that??) was weird because it was not connected to the existing storylines at all. I understand it was supposed to be a standalone for those unfamiliar with the show and taught us about brotherly love and compromise, but it just seemed unnecessary and the stakes were too extreme to be taken seriously. 

Special shout-out to Woody! You were the glue that held the show together and I can’t believe you were never a main cast member with a credit in the titles?!

The Suite Life on Deck - PART 1

I decided to skip the original “Suite Life of Zack and Cody” (Suite Life) and jump ahead to “The Suite Life on Deck” (SLOD) mostly because I was afraid the cuteness of the twins wouldn't be able to supersede my mild annoyance with Ashely Tisdale. Also, as I have already seen Suite Life I wanted to discover the teenage years of Zack (Dylan Sprouse) and Cody (Cole Sprouse), and how they deal with the tribulations of school, hormones and relationships etc. 

Similarly to Suite Life, SLOD has yet another exciting and unique premise where the kids are attending a school at sea, travelling the world and enjoying the luxuries of a cruise ship. For a young viewer, this must have been incredibly appealing. Like the original show set in the Tipton Hotel, the SS Tipton is even more exotic and new, especially to the majority of the US middle to lower income families of target audiences; who would have never experienced something like this before. Pegged as a spin-off, (a tricky way to get the cast/crew “on board” without giving them a pay rise of a season renewal) fans followed attentively as they have grown up with the gang. “How did they work it into the storyline?” You ask! ”Super Easy, Barely an Inconvenience”: the only way London Tipton, the hotel heiress will attend school in hopes of finally graduating, is for her father to trap her inside the cruise liner High School! 

In my previous viewings, I never really noticed the distinct character differentiation between Cody being studious, intelligent and nerdy, whilst Zack is the cool and rebellious twin. Of course, this was established in Suite Life and essential to have conflict and propel plots in the show, but it seems to be pushed to extremes here; mostly at the expense of Cody. Cody is shown to be an eccentric kid played up for comedic effect, but he is also a super genius who knows everything from ancient relics to astronomy, without an ounce of coolness as he is shown to ditch senior ditch day; which just makes him weird. Zack on the other hand, portrayed to be a lone stallion, ladies’ man, lazy and mischievous just seems like a normal teenager doing the bare minimum to get by. Zack does make some devastating and selfish decisions that have high consequences, e.g. spending all of their money so that the twins have to get jobs. Cody, used to his brother’s troublesome ways,  just accepts his fate. Other than that, we never see Zack doing terrible pranks, it is rather hinted at in the opening of an episode with an outrageous stunt and Zack is mostly all talk (apart from the senior prank air ballooning Mr Moseby (Phill Lewis) into the sky!)

I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for Zack and he is not completely careless. Though his schemes may start off selfish, he always ends up helping others (rescuing his brother from a secret Brotherhood to initially get him to do his homework and instead helps Cody get over his break-up). Cody is more in his own world which I think makes it easier for Cole to play up the comedy, whilst Dylan is charming with his bits and it seems more realistic. Also, Zack is basically told throughout his whole childhood he will end up in prison, (kind of dark) so when he does finally graduate it is a huge achievement! I admire how the show does not specify what is next for Zack, that he has options like trade school, because it's okay to know that a college education may not be for everyone. 

Of course, these character traits are what makes them find their romantic partners. For Cody it is equal overachiever country girl Bailey, which is cute and though I didn’t appreciate it at first because I thought they were too alike, I realized it was their differences of her practicality and  his emasculinity that make them work. Zack finds love in independent Maya who continually rejects him because he’s a ladies’ man, but it was adorable to see him change. They predictably broke up but sadly their characters were given no closure. 

The storylines are impressive, like the original Suite Life they are light and fluffy, with physical comedy and shenanigans ensuing. I like that the show does not get too deep and emotional, nor try to teach us morals, just kinds of glosses over it with “brotherly love” is always the strongest foundation. You could also argue that morals are mocked in SLOD. Like in the original, London is a self-obsessed airhead and here continually mocks and insults Bailey, who just takes it. Also, we know Cody and Bailey are exemplary students whilst Zack and London are far from it. Mrs Tuttweiller (Erin Cardillo) often fears and berates Cody and Bailey for trying too hard, and when Zack and London don’t try there are no consequences and despite their failings, get through the classes (mostly because London bribes the teacher).

Coop and Cami Ask The World

Who’d have thought that after Bizaardvark, Disney Channel needed another internet based concept for a TV series? Whether we wanted it or not, we got “Coop and Cami Ask the World”, which continues Disney’s attempt to appeal to its tech savvy, TikTok engrossed audience. The Wrather’s host a live stream that gets its fictional audience to vote in the classic “Would You Rather” game, which is popular with children and became a viral challenge a few years ago. Furthermore, the format gives the TV series an opportunity to display outrageous stunts (reigniting the Raven and Jessie style), and cleverly ties the poll system where characters, when in a moral quandary, can ask their audience what to do (often hit or miss). However, unlike Bizaardvark, the driving force of the show is not the web platform, rather it is the traditional Disney family structure, using a play on their name “Would You Wrather?” as the brand. Of course, we must suspend reality and remember that in this alternate universe, the mother is completely fine with her two kids hosting online videos where strangers vote to put their youngest sibling through a series of crazy and dangerous stunts! (I assume in this universe all content is carefully monitored and undergoes meticulous screening before being shared.) 

In an effort to reflect a more realistic America, the matriarch is a single, widowed parent and sole breadwinner, yet this is not anything new as there have been many single parents in Disney sitcoms (shout out to Carey Martin). Also, the show is set in Minnesota?! The kids partake in regionally accurate sports like ice hockey and they get very cold winters, proving that Disney is trying to reach and represent every child in the outskirts of America. 

Like the success of my favourite Disney shows, at the heart is the family structure and bond between the siblings and unique friends. Plots are usually about the trials of school, friendship and relationships; they explore relevant social issues including loss (their show was created as a way to mourn their father) and blended families.

The titular roles are middle-schoolers Coop and Cami, the middle brother and sister who run the web show. Cooper (Dakota Lotus) is a sweet and easy going boy who is a charming host, but it’s really his sister who runs it. Cami (Ruby Rose Turner) is strong willed, stubborn and bossy. She is involved in school council and wields her power; it is refreshing to watch a young female character be assertive and still be likeable. The brother and sister duo should really be twins, but Disney didn’t want yet another set and Coop is one year older than Cami; though it’s never really clarified. They are extremely supportive to one-another, often getting into risky scenarios to save the other ones' butt. Coop’s best friend is the annoying and quirky Fred (Albert Tsai), the neighbour kid who never goes home. Overstaying his welcome and lusting over his crush Cami he helps run the stream, but is always just the assistant. Fred’s quirkiness and the actor’s winey, sassy performance brings a lot of comedy to the show as we watch him interact in social situations. I like that they often pair him with the other siblings, showing that he has truly become part of the family. 

Charlotte (Olivia Sanabia) is the oldest Wrather kid and the only one not to shorten her name; hinting at her personality of being proper and that she never breaks the rules. For the usual Disney package she is the studious, overachiever, teacher’s pet archetype; her strange hobbies include glee and bird calling clubs, and she gets easily stressed. Nonetheless, Charlotte is rarely made fun of for her personality and it is accepted that this is who she is, which is a refreshing change from the usual cruel, nerd mocking Disney way.  Finally Ollie (Paxton Booth), the youngest Wrather at 8 years old is the typical lovable and cute kid. I honestly think the actor and weird eccentric character is in his own world; the main storylines of the show rarely revolve around him and he is just there. Regardless, he is the star of the live stream as he relishes in performing the stunts. A recurring sad theme is that he is too young to remember their late father, so the siblings try to make up for it. For example, Coop takes him on a fishing trip to try to recreate his special fishing trip he experienced with their Dad and it is extremely touching. 

The show is successful in upholding the traditional Disney formula based on friendship and family values. Admiral is the portrayal of a working class family where the mum works very hard to give her children everything, but they must also pull their weight to understand the value of money and look out for one another. Sure it is an enjoyable enough show, but for the point in time it has been released, it feels lacking. In this information hyper-speed, interactive world we live in of instant reactions, young audiences are craving more and expect to be involved in their media. The show only provides a taste where viewers are passively observing an online show...it needs something to take it over the edge. It can be argued that “Ask the World” is a way for younger audiences to be introduced into the online world. A more interactive and improv style show has been attempted in Disney’s “Just Roll With It”, where a contained live studio audience can vote on outcomes and I think is quite progressive. Bizaardvark “Let’s go make some videos!”

Who knew that a Disney Channel show could teach me so much about YouTube, social influencers and how the viral video business works?! That’s exactly what “Bizaardvark” does in a family friendly package that includes archetypal Disney characters of pretty girls, goofs and nerds. To me, the most special thing about this show is the beautiful and touching sisterhood between the protagonists Paige (Olivia Rodrigo) and Frankie (Madison Hu), stars of “Bizaardvark”. The two very creative and intelligent teenagers make comedy videos on the fictional video sharing platform “Vuuugle”. They are successful enough to join the Vuuugle family, earning studio time with other successful creators including “Perfect Perfection with Amelia” (DeVore Ledridge) and Dirk’s “Dare me Bro!” (Jake Paul) stunt channel. Later in the series we meet “What's in M'Hair?” with Rodney (Elie Samouhi) and “Zane Unboxed” (Maxwell Simkins). Not forgetting Bizaardvark’s agent Bernie Schotz (Ethan Wacker); the token jester of the show, but he has so much heart and is incredibly charismatic.

Although I'm not a pre-teen/teenager and am far from it’s target audience, I am impressed with how this show made in the mid twenty-teens is reflective of what kids are consuming media wise; it listens and depicts this in it’s content. This includes characters taking part in all those random YouTube challenges (Draw My Life, Would You Rather, Face the Cookie etc), colourful characters (Horse Face Guy, Viking Guy) and high quality music videos produced by “Bizaardvark” (taking time, money and research to write random lyrics appreciated by fans). It does a fantastic job of capturing the imagination of kids already watching reams and reams of this on YouTube, though it cannot compete with their true“YouTube” heroes. What is interesting, is that in season two the premise of the show moves more away from the Vuuugle studios and more towards the school life of the teens. Perhaps in response to parents’ criticism that Disney was encouraging internet fame over a traditional education (especially as in season one Paige and Frankie attended private school and did not fit in), Disney had to go back to its familiar school surroundings and as a result allowed it’s audience to relate to the characters more; bringing in recognizable “kid issues” e.g. popularity, dating, studying and anxiety etc.

In season three, the show decides to go back to a non-traditional format akin of “The Suite Life” franchise, setting it in a beach house where the Vuuugle creators can roam free to make content with lack of parents. Apart from Bernie’s Grandma, like my other favourite Disney shows, there are few adult figures. Only Frankie’s Dad and Paige’s mum pop-up once in a while to show they have a strong family foundation, but also similar to “Bunk’d” the authority figure at their school: Principal Karen is not taken seriously because she wants to be fit in as one of the kids. Equally, the CEO of Vuuugle Liam who wheels around as a computer screen is mocked; but he doesn’t care about any of it anyway.

I cannot praise Paige and Frankie’s friendship enough! Portrayed as opposites, Paige with heart and sensitivity, and Frankie who is cold-hearted and awkward; they are true to one another and bring out the best in each other! I cried during “Friend Fight!”; Frankie does not want others’ opinions and doesn’t let others in after her mum left her (so harsh - but real ish). When Paige stops her from talking and just hugs her, OMG! Freakin’ Oscar worthy performance...I balled. They’ve also discussed other issues such as needing time for their own hobbies (Paige’s MMA) and not knowing what the future holds; that “Bizaardvark” may not be forever.

My thoughts on Jake Paul. He gained fame through Vine and earned a gigantic fandom of young people, so from that aspect it was strategic of Disney to hire a genuine viral sensation and bring in his fans. However, it was obvious that his personal vlog content would not be in line with the Disney branding (don’t even get me started on his brother.) Apparently Paul vlogged throughout his time on “Bizaardvark” with pranks etc, but since his firing has been taken down. I looked at his channel now and I am not surprised by the blatantly, click bait overtly sexualised, outrageous “dude” and stunt style content he produces, it’s just not for me and I honestly cringe watching his “Bizaardvark” episodes. Nonetheless, I get that he has a dedicated fan base who have grown up with him...it’s just that this is what makes me fear for the future of youth.

Cameron Boyce

Today marks one year since the passing of actor Cameron Boyce and I wanted to say a few words about his life. When I learnt of his passing, Boyce was vaguely familiar to me but I had no idea of his overwhelming talent, heart and impact he had on his adoring fans. Since then, I have delved into his Disney outings including the “Descendants” franchise and his plight as Luke in “Jessie”. Undoubtedly he was a cute kid with his trademark freckles and curly hair, but what I’ve learnt from interviews with his family, friends and colleagues was his charismatic charm, kindness, positive energy, unwavering empathy and ability to bring joy to everyone...he made others believe in themselves. He was an incredible community activist creating the “Thirst Project,” bringing drinking water to impoverished populations. Perhaps a cliche, Boyce was an angel on earth and one of those individuals who excuse the saying, “Was just too good for this world.” 

All the kids on “Jessie” were incredibly talented. My favourite pairing is the duo of Luke and Ravi (Karan Brar); opposites of the jock and nerd where the actors played up the slap-stick comedy and physicality, but portrayed a bond of friendship and brotherhood who would do anything for each other. You can tell that as they grew, the pair continued to push one another further and further, which is why they were best friends until Boyce’s last day. Weirdly fitting that Brar, after the two had moved in together to start a new chapter of their lives, found Boyce unconscious. 

One of my favourite scenes is their Bollywood dance performance for Luke’s world’s showcase school assignment. Ravi attempts to embarrass his brother, (dressing him in a sari) but cannot go through with it and gets up on stage to dance with him. Boyce’s natural rhythm and dance abilities allowed him to ease into it, but if you watch carefully Boyce has to act like he is “trying” to pick up the steps, when in reality it was effortless. “Jessie” producers consistently made sure to incorporate his dancing in the show wherever possible, including his break dance crew X-Mob performances. In the Descendants franchise I’m always looking for him (Ways to be Wicked), but alas he is under utilized which is totally fine because this wasn’t his story.

Undoubtedly, producers must have had lots of lead roles for him coming up: musicals, drama comedy... the list could have gone on. Boyce had experience as the leading man in Disney’s “Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything.” At this point in his life, Boyce most likely had an understanding of how he wanted his career to go, there must have been some incredible people around him to help him stay focused and maintain his vision. I believe this to be true because if you look at his IMDB credits, it is not as packed as other child actors of his age. Perhaps he wanted to carefully pick, dedicate himself and fully believe in the next project he was doing. Entering your 20s is a great point to do that: take control and work on things you want to...unfortunately that was taken from him. We will however always have Boyce’s smiling face and can relive the joy he brought to children and adults alike forever.

Hay Jassay!

I had to go back to the roots of “Bunk’d” and check out “Jessie”. The Disney original sitcom seemed like a solid concept: out of town, aspiring actress is inexplicably hired to be a nanny to four spoiled, waywardly rich kids in a Manhattan penthouse and drive her bananas!

It’s a simple, yet effective premise with room to deliver eccentric characters and outrageous adventures = recipe for a perfect Disney show. “Jessie” stars Debby Ryan, whose popularity and talent as Bailey on the “Suite Life on Deck” gained her her own show. Ryan also had creative input as an co-producer and became Disney’s younger Director on “Jessie”. Ryan’s over the top, comedic style paired with her wild stunts, which on the surface seems annoying, is the key to the show’s success as it plays off of the fleshed out children characters; delivering the true heart of the show. 

The Ross kids from oldest to youngest is pretty and stereotypical dumb blonde Emma (Peyton List); the only biological Ross child. Emma is fashionista and social influencer teenager all about being hip and in style, embarrassed by anything her small town nanny wears and says. Rather than depicting the dumb blonde, in this incantation Emma is intuitive, uses logic, is kind and tougher than what they turn her into on “Bunk’d”.

Luke (Cameron Boyce), is the ultimate troublemaker and ladies man who tries to woo Jessie and any other woman he meets. The second eldest, Luke is portrayed as beyond help in his mischievousness and laziness in academia and wanting to become a better human. Nonetheless all of this is redeemed in his bromance with brother Ravi and he always steps up to do the right thing for his family. Producers of the show knew they couldn’t miss out on showcasing Boyce’s incredible dance and athletic talents, getting him to bust out his polished break dance moves any chance they got; also utilizing his comedic timing and his charismatic charm. 

Ravi (Karan Brar), the most critically controversial character (US born Indian actor putting on a thick Indian accent, stereotypical nerd who gets bullied at school and whose best friend is a lizard.) Ravi, a year younger than Luke and the last Ross to be adopted into the family, is a sensitive and passionate character; he often gets caught up in his siblings’ antics. As he is the most sensible one, once his suffering becomes too much it pushes him into violent Hindi outbursts. Ravi’s sweet side is apparent in his bond with his siblings, ride or die comedic duo with Luke and most importantly his touching, if not strange, companionship with Mrs Kipling; the lizard who came with him from India. 

Zuri (Skai Jackson), the youngest child who came into the Ross family as a baby from Uganda, is the ultimate cute factor. Zuri is the feistiest out of the siblings and as the youngest, spends a lot of time with Jessie at the park. Her rebellious nature is fun to watch as she challenges Jessie’s authority and where most of Jessie’s over the top comedy comes from. Portrayed as a spoiled  and selfish brat with a business mind, she ultimately schemes to help Jessie and when they hug, affirming love for one another, it is truly heartwarming. What starts off as cute unfortunately turns into a stereotype of the sassy black girl who gets caught up in nefarious dealings. 

All of the actors are so talented, this was particularly exhibited when they switched bodies, (one of my favourite tropes) an 8 year old nailing the mannerisms and intonations of adult Jessie was incredible. All of these kids deserved bright futures (makes me angry that they just wasted Boyce’s acting talents in the Descendants trilogy...but I know he wasn’t the focus of that story.)

Yes there are negative stereotypes as I discussed in “Bunk’d”, but here you are so overwhelmed by the kids’ talents, race is not the defining factor, rather this is who they are in this very close and loving family. Of course, I can’t forget the comic foil inherent in all Disney shows for the children to mock and torment, in this case it is the butler Bertram. Bertram despises his job and the children, he is a suck-up when the parents arrive and all he dreams about is vacationing on a beach away from them. We all know this is a guise and he would do anything for the kids (which he proves multiple times). 

I certainly have an issue with the Ross’ neglectful parents, a big time movie director and supermodel, who are NEVER there!  If this was real life it would emotionally mess these children up, but of course it is all for entertainment purposes. Regardless, when they do pop up throughout the series they are out of touch with their kids and do not listen to their needs, e.g.the mother designs a teenage fashion line without consulting her teenage fashionista daughter. To me their absence comes off as selfish and their resolution in the episodes of,  “You are the most important thing to me and I’ll try to be there” to show the audience good family values seems dishonest and empty.

Disney’s...Bunk'd

In these troubled times I've found myself avoiding traditional and social media outlets, instead finding alternative means of escapism...enter the Disney Channel. It started with watching Disney Park walk-throughs on YouTube, but now I am full on binge-watching old and new original Disney programming. This is all my brain can handle right now, perhaps hearkening back to a simpler time and reviving the innocence of childhood. As always, I still have my critical brain, so over the next few posts I am going to talk about the good and bad of Disney originals. Overall, I'm impressed with the concepts, comedy and joy that these shows bring, most are brand new to me and I am viewing with fresh eyes per se. I've began to understand how pacing in children's programming differ from adult shows. Majority of the time you do not get caught up in emotional investment, “Thank you ma'am”...until the end of the season and realize,"Wait, I need these characters in my life!" They have become your family!

I'm starting with "Bunk'd" (2015-present) which is a spin-off from the highly popular "Jessie" (insert theme song here: HAY JESSAY!) Note, I did not know this at all and that the three main characters of privileged Ross children: Emma, Ravi and Zuri are sent to Camp Kikiwaka for the summer as this is where their parents met; it's time for them learn about the value of the real world. I was even more confused when their troublesome brother Luke came to visit and everyone cheered for him (I quickly connected the dots that he too was from “Jessie” and I will be dedicating a post to the incredible and beloved late Cameron Boyce). 

The new campers are unimpressed by the realities of camp life but quickly start to adapt when they find their own interests and cliches. Emma finds her best friend and love interest in Camp Counselors: quirky, farm girl Lou and dashing, musically inclined Xander. Ravi embraces his nerdiness and physical lacking, yet perseveres to be the best counselor he can be; clashing with slob and carefree Jorge. Zuri, intent on selfish and money making schemes vows to make sure her fellow Woodchuck Nina, a brainiac only focused on studying, has fun this summer. 

What I really enjoy about the show is that kids are in charge. Apart from the one adult, Camp Director Gladys who is depicted far from a responsible adult and rather a pathetic, lonely spinster obsessed with Mr Ross, is negligent of the children and the camp. The show has come under rightful criticism that it encourages disobedience to adults as all the kids mock Gladys. Nonetheless, the Camp Counselors are shown to be responsible in  running the camp, despite their best efforts shenanigans do occur (otherwise we wouldn't have a delightful comedic Disney show!) To me, someone who has never gone to camp, the show successfully idealizes what fun camp is: activities, mishaps in the mess hall, pranks on your roommates and overnight trips - I want to be there! 

Unfortunately, I agree with other criticisms of the show that it reinforces negative racial stereotypes including: sassy Black girl,  “head in the books” Asian along with Tiger Mum, rich dumb blond White girl (and handsome boyfriend), nerdy Indian with strong accent and lazy Mexican. To some extent the already established stereotypes were handed down from "Jessie" and, as they were already beloved e.g. Zuri's gigantic fandom, they did not want to change in fear of losing viewers. However, the writers did nothing to eradicate further stereotypes when introducing new characters and only perpetuated them. An argument can be made that this was the only way a multicultural cast could exist on TV, by reinforcing what audiences were used to seeing and thus Disney were too scared to challenge the norms. This is particularly upsetting and distasteful in the episode where Zuri and Jorge run an illegal enterprise selling candy.  Another negatively represented character is Hazel, the head Camp Counselor and niece of Gladys who is obsessed with Xander. Sadly, their love triangle mirrors the Morgan Ross, Christina Ross and Gladys storyline resulting in Glady's misery and unhealthy mental state; equally played as Hazel’s future. It starts off funny as she pines over Xander, but then her stalker behaviour and schemes against Emma become disturbing and painful to watch, and like her Aunt she is despised and mocked. Fortunately the writers wised up and gave Hazel closure in season four; she rekindles her friendship with Lou and realizes her worth is more than a boy. 

Thank goodness that by season four, when the three Ross kids had left the show they decided to change things up for the better. “Bunk’d” keeps some of key characters who were introduced in the previous season: Destiny, Matteo and Finn, unlikely friends who have an adorable and meaningful Three Musketeers bond, and Lou; keeping the foundations of Camp Kikiwaka yet with a twist. Now Lou is the owner and Camp Director, her love and dedication for the camp cannot mask her goofiness and gawfs as she hires two new counselors with no experience: Noah is an aspiring actor and Ava, a city kid from New York, who doesn't even want to be there! I love this concept because through her inexperience, Lou has brought together kids who want to make a difference,  (Noah through his improv and Shakespeare readings) but has no outdoor skills and the tough-hearted (Ava) who will learn the meaning of friendship and helping others. Gwen is also a sweet addition, she grew up in the woods and is overcoming her fear of people. Like the majority of Disney shows, it will likely end after season four and it makes sense with the kids getting bigger all the time. But it would be cool if "Bunk'd" had a revolving cast every few years - showing it's viewers the joy of camping and bringing together people who you wouldn't meet in your regular life!

Things I'm a fan of include Karan Brar as Ravi; he is incredibly talented and his overacting is hilarious, which after watching Jessie I realize is instilled in him and he just had to keep it up. The show is fun and doesn't try to teach morals too much. The Halloween and spooky episodes are scary AF, I appreciate the disclaimers but what kid is going to pay attention to that?! The Emma and Xander romance is so annoying but sooo cute, I still love them and that's an  impressive feat. There are some incredibly touching moments like when Xander adopts Griff as his little brother (juvie kid who was a part of the cast for a while). When Ava reveals the reason why she came to camp was because she had a fight with her mum and they reunite; that's some real ish.

Welcome to the Hood...to "The Neighborhood"

A hidden treasure of a show which although is on network television, is something special.

It's a cliche storyline where an uber white, middle class young family move into a predominantly urban neighbourhood (presumably because of gentrification); the stereotypical black patriarch takes offense with the new neighbours and comedy ensues.  It's basically the racial reverse of Archie Bunker "All in the Family" with Cedric the Entertainer in the protagonist role, though this rendition similarly has the foundations of prejudice and racial stereotypes, there is less racism. Calvin (Cedric) who has wife Tina (Tichina Arnold) of 30 years and two grown up children, is offended by everything that nerdy, white hipster Dave (Max Greenfield) does, who is just trying to fit in and is determined to be Calvin's best friend. Dave and his wife Gemma (Beth Behrs) a school principal, have a young son; they are successful and most importantly open to new experiences; consequently they yearn to learn as much as they can from the older couple.

The show is under the guise of a cheesy family sitcom and is sneakily trying to make a comment on society, yet it is just reflecting the America that they live in. Subjects explored include the "white man" taking away black culture - for example, a white chef perfecting soul food when in actual fact, he is giving amazing opportunities to the black community. Granted this is a bit simplistic and far fetched in achieving its "Don't judge a book by it's cover" educational goals, it is still a relevant conversation.

I admit that as a non-American I don't fully understand the landscape of this struggle and perspective, but I appreciate what they are trying to say. Rather than teach us a lesson of "Kumbaya...let's all live in peace and harmony", it communicates that yes, we completely disagree on aspects of the world, I'm always going to have my opinions and prejudices against another race, but I recognize them and we CAN get along. Of course it's still a comedy show and the shenanigans that duo's Dave and Calvin, Gemma and Tina (#badgirl) who become best friends and of the sons are silly and funny because they are simple plots.

The sitcom is relatable as both families are at different stages of their lives and how the generations interact with one another. Having two grown, adult sons who still live at home and are grappling to find their place in the world is a reality of millennial these days. Juxtaposed by frustrated Calvin who believes once you graduate from school, you get a job and move out on your own; yet he is ultimately a softy that would do anything for his children. They play upon this tough Dad persona and his relationship with his sons, affirming that his wife is the only reason why he puts up with his kids "freeloading" off of him, but really he wants them to succeed and loves them very much. Perhaps parents of this generation have been softened to a degree and spoil their children because they don't want them to go through the same hardships that they had to. Note, Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty (Marcel Spears) are not "freeloaders", they are a product of their loving family upbringing; one an engineer and the other an ex baseball player, they are both intelligent, have heart, their father's humour and are incredibly likable characters.

This show reminded me of the short lived "Superior Donuts" sitcom, which although I enjoyed was a bit ahead of it's time in taking a stance again modern day America and actively criticizing hot topic buttons like immigration and gun violence. "The Neighborhood" on the other hand, is more lighthearted in it's portrayal and an easier dose for a prime time comedy network slot. Either way, the show manages to balance kooky, everyday plot lines against a modern day America that reflects accurate cultural and racial stereotypes. It is clever and funny, giving a sly knowing wink to it's audience.

Hey I’m Grump, I’m not so Grump...

Man oh man what is my fascination with the Game Grumps?! I can't believe that I have fallen under the spell of these two, overgrown man children (meant in the most kindest way) YouTubers who play video games and produce other nonsensical content.

I have nothing in common with these dudes; I am not a gamer and I would even say they are annoying, offensive, rude, mannerless, disgusting (burps with no apology), yet I watch endlessly. I recognize their charisma and realize they are just having fun, and darn it...like the rest of the world I’m developing a crush on Dan“ny Sexbang” Avidan!

I first found Arin "Egoraptor" Hanson and Dan Avidan from their gameplay videos featuring the one and only Ben Schwartz @rejectedjokes: Magic Kingdom, Aladdin, Whiplash and of course "Sonic the Hedgehog" (would be foolish not to!) Next, I discovered the Game Grumps TV game show series' including fan favourite "Wheel of Fortune". In this rendition, they mold the perfect avatars, strategically spin the wheel, clumsily take guesses that lead to the pair becoming frustrated with each other, the game and "douchebag" AIs, it's a whole journey. I further discovered the "House Party" series and it's new reiteration, where Arin and Dan are characters in the game! They mock and relish in the pornographic game's ditzy premise and characters, convoluted quests, ridiculous storylines and dialogue (offering sympathy to voice actors), lust for female vixens (hope Arin's wife was cool with that) with the ultimate goal of hooking up with these females. (Homoerotic storylines are also available). Watching real life Arin and Dan interact with video game characters Arin and Dan, where the game designers pay homage to their mocking from the original series is way too meta and amazing. The ultimate dream of anyone who has played video games is to be in one!

It's true, over the last few weeks in consuming their content I have become impressed with Arin and Dan's comedic and musical talents; including Arin's silly voices and impressions, their intelligence and overall fearlessness to say whatever they want, not caring if it's funny or not. Most importantly, whether they are exclaiming their love or disdain for one another it is sincere because of their genuine bromance.

At 5 million Youtube followers strong, their Insta/Twitter followers seem to be from across all spectrums; predictably the majority is teenagers, but surprisingly it is both men and women, people who have their shit together vs people who don't. It doesn't matter, the Grumps have universal appeal. They have a dedicated fan base who consistently purchase their merch, I just don't get the references because I still need to consume a lot more GG content.

I understand the duo are a product of business model "JETPACK" with producers, writers etc. and their repertoire include the "10 Minute Power Hour", "The Grumps" channel, video games, a young adult novel and scripted YouTube show "Good Game". Plus with their respective bands "Ninja Sex Party"and "Starbomb", they are on track to becoming a mighty conglomerate. In these uncertain times, it has been a smart move on their part to self-isolate together, so they can continue to put out videos and maintain the demands of the fandom, for which we are grateful.

I now find myself falling asleep to the soothing tones of grumpy video game commentary and their utter disbelief at the incoherence of some of these games. Special shout-out to compilations of Dan yelling at Arin, especially during "Wheel of Fortune" insisting he "stop thinking out loud!"
