There was something distinctly chilling in Lady Han’s little glance at her daughter that morning, the kind that brought a little trepidation along with the nervous stutter in one’s heart. At this day, Han Seolhwa knew that something is going to happen. In the PALACE no less. And if the young girl could guess the list of possibilities that would put that sort of smile on her mother’s face, MARRIAGE would be on the top of that list. Of course, she would not dare question it out loud, but she would let the idea float in her heart-- uncomfortably and piercingly, like the howling wind directly inside one’s ear.
Now inside the palace -- she is not ashamed (perhaps even proud) to say that she is almost familiar with the beautiful royal architecture -- Han Seolhwa is placed inside one of the pavilions of the inner palace, a table laden with tea and cakes placed in front of her and across from her; a prince, very much present, and very much REAL.
The girl’s entire life had built up to this, one shining moment-- and she is nothing short of petrified.
The Prince does have a certain reputation-- a reputation that is unbecoming for a Prince, really -- a strange sort of contrast to her pristine life that scared her. She had met him in their childhood, perhaps once or twice as she took lessons with his half-sisters, but her memory fails her-- she could not place a face. Now as she kept her gaze respectfully lowered, she would sneak one or two glances at Prince Myungsoo and wondered despairingly how could she possibly forget that face. She knew she would NOT forget it now.
And now she sat still, perfectly like a doll, as she waited for the Prince to regard her. Do not speak unless spoken to, she was told-- and Han Seolhwa is determined to do everything absolutely perfectly.
