“Withdraw into yourself, as far as you can. Associate with those who will make a better man of you. Welcome those whom you yourself can improve. The process is mutual; for men learn while they teach.” – Seneca, Moral Letters to Lucilius
Incompetent people are often so incompetent, they don’t even realize their own incompetence.
According to the Dunning-Kruger effect, people who are ignorant or unskilled in any area are too inept to notice, so they end up thinking they’re far more competent than they actually are.

Oh, I think "incompetent, ignorant or unskilled" is far too kind for many people these days. Those terms imply a chance of improvement. I think the recent past shows that even the harshest lesson rarely breaks the hard ceiling of true ignorance.
You can learn to add to the tank until it's full, but a small tank still only holds so much. It's almost impossible to get a bigger tank. Just maybe you can drain some sludge out of the bottom? I hope so.
I guess I'm hopeful after all. ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯
Dystopia is always built from the top down, but resistance is built from the ground up. Your local school board, your city council, your neighborhood mutual aid group. That's where you find the antidote. Go organize something small, mighty, and beautifully democratic. The revolution starts at the zoning meeting. ✊
Do something good for your world.
Trump and his collaborators are pushing this to a very bad place for everyone, including themselves. They might have the numbers to instigate something, but not enough to pull it off. There could be nothing worse than allowing traitors to defy the Constitution they are sworn to support and defend.
