"Can you bring me Trinity's files, please?" Dr. Howard motioned for the young assistant to bring the large pile of papers he managed to compile within seconds. The female synthetic specialist sat by a long, metal table where a seemingly deactivated synthetic lied motionless, its torso open and wiring exposed. They had encountered a small glitch within its energy storage and needed to isolate its wiring to find the source. Not only that, they also needed to study the records of all the other synthetics to prevent any similar malfunctions to occur within their wiring as well.Â
As he approached the senior specialist, Barnabas handed her the papers and quickly took a seat on the opposite side of the table, continuing to look for the source of the malfunction. Under normal circumstances, tensions would've surely been high as the pressure to keep the synthetics in perfect condition only intensified each day that passed in Heron's Hope—but that was never the case between Barnabas and Dr. Howard. There was always something about Dr. Howard that calmed Barnabas down and allowed him to process his thoughts about any situation with a clearer mind. Possibly because she was the very reason that he was part of such an immense project as Heron's Hope was. However, that never meant he wouldn't be frustrated the moment Dr. Howard left the room, but for now, he was calm and collected.Â
"Has she been performing to the standard requirements?" Dr. Howard asked as she began looking over the files. Barnabas continued to meddle within the synthetic on the bed, but he responded with a nod regardless.
"Yes, doctor. From what I've seen, she seems to be performing incredibly well, dare I say better than the day she was brought here." Barnabas looked up for a second to meet Dr. Howard's eyes and smiled. "Her team seems very happy with her as well, she appears to fit right in." Grabbing a small tool from the table he leaned forward once again to proceed his search for the source of the malfunction as Dr. Howard continued to read over the files.Â
"So this is the only glitched, then." She said, Barnabas simply responding with a nod this time. "And we're positive it's in the wiring?" Barnabas nodded again.Â
"I cannot think of anything else it could be, doctor. Its programming has not been changed, nothing has been wiped or rebooted, so its database shouldn't be damaged at all." Grunting softly, Barnabas began cutting some of the wiring inside of the android's body, only to quickly replace it new ones. "You saw it for yourself, there's something disabling the energy to flow throughout its body evenly. The movements glitch from time to time, and there's reports of it even freezing for no reason. There has to be something blocking the flow of energy, a loose wire, perhaps? But the crazy thing is, I've looked everywhere for one. There's nothing."
Barnabas sighed, leaning back on the chair he was currently sitting on and wiping off the sweat that was slowly building up on his forehead. For a split second, the lab was completely silent. The young assistant hated when the place was entirely silent, but for that split second the silence was the last thing on his mind. He was in deep thought, wondering what could possibly be causing a glitch within the synthetic's energy sources. Barnabas wanted nothing more than to figure it out, to impress the senior specialist that sat before him, and to further assist the development of humankind's settlement in this unknown planet. He was almost desperate to find the answer, he wanted Dr. Howard to see that he was still a valuable asset to both her, and Heron's Hope. His thoughts, however, were soon interrupted by the woman's voice.Â
"I might know what the problem could be," she stated as she looked down at her Datapad. Damn it, once again Barnabas was too slow at solving the problem. "Something has come up, though, and my attention is needed elsewhere. We can continue this later, keep him deactivated so we don't further damage all of the circuits." She quickly stood up and began walking towards the door before turning around to look at Barnabas again. "Oh! I almost forgot, I was supposed to meet Mr. Frank here today. You know who Owen is, right? If you could please just stay here until he shows up and tell him I'll be back soon, I would greatly appreciate that, Barney, I really need to take care of this." She laughed, and before Barnabas could say a word, she was gone.Â
"Owen Frank.." He said to himself. That was the leader of the Civil team, wasn't it? Technically that was Barnabas's "leader", but the young man hardly saw anyone else other Dr. Howard and the big dogs at Weyland Corp. as figures of authority. He supposed it would be interesting to finally—and properly—meet the man that was supposedly in charge of him.Â
Barnabas had seen Mr. Frank around the settlement several times, and every time he had been as respectful as he had to be towards him, but they never got a chance to really 'talk' before. With Barnabas spending most of his time in the research labs with Dr. Howard, working and developing the Synthetics, Barnabas hadn't gotten a chance to talk to many people, Owen included. He did as his superior told him, however, and he waited for the man to come meet Dr. Howard.Â
The man stayed on the same chair he had been sitting on before, and continued working on the synthetic before him. He wasn't aware of the exact time the other man would show up, nor did he know when Dr. Howard would return. He secretly hoped she would return just seconds after the man arrived, however, so he wouldn't have to talk to his "figure of authority" for too long. He was in the middle of important work, after all.Â
