“You can? That is amazing!” She said in awe as she grinned at him. “Oh my goodness! Now I’m excited for this! It should be a lot of fun for them I’m sure.” She clapped her hands together as she nodded her head. “How lucky I am, I’m glad we met today!” 

“Well-- sort of? It’s an inexact thing,” Ira made a halfhearted attempt to explain. “Yes! I’m excited too, I’m sure it’ll be a ton of fun for everyone. Here--” Ira pulled a business card from his wallet, a pretty little recycled brown cardstock with embossed gold lettering that had all the information about both Sugar and Spice (the farm) and The Magic Box (the shop) emblazoned on it. “Just let me know about scheduling and I’ll fit it in, no problem.”

“Ira, it’s how I talk to them when you are here” she replied and hopped over the counter to start restocking some shelves while the customer was wandering around the store “What’s with all the honey? We serving Winnie the Pooh now?”

“Yes, well...customer service is all about pretending to like everyone who comes in through that door, at least on your part,” Ira said, scrunching up his nose a little. “No, don’t be silly. I’m trying to make batches of magical honey by having the bees only pollinate the magical plants. So far, not super promising, but it does mean we have all this honey.”

“Welcome to the Magic Box, how can I he- No, you know what? What do you want? I’m sick of repeating that dumb sentence” she huffed and leaned against the counter “I don’t need to say it, you know why you’re here”

“No,” Ira said, frowning as he came around the corner, a crate of honey in his arms. “You can’t say that to people! Is that how you talk to customers when I’m not here?”

Violet decided that today, on one of her days off where she couldn’t easily just escape to a place far from where she actually was. Walking into the magic shop she paused at each rack of shelves to see what was on them, they were mostly not for her, and she had almost conceded defeat on that front. When the voice called she turned to face where it had come from and tilted her head. “Uh, maybe, do you have anything that would be a permanent solution to a cat with a fur ball problem? And on that front, can you make a cat immortal?”

“Uh,” Ira said, tilting his head a little bit as the woman asked some...unusual questions. “Well, I’d opt for a hairless cat in the future, but...I might be able to find something? I’m not sure, it’s not exactly a common problem that people look for magical solutions for,” he said apologetically. “Um...I can’t, personally, I don’t believe in messing with life or death like that, but...I’m sure you can find someone open to it?”

“Oh, what a fascinating experiment! I’d be very interested in learning how it goes,” Daphne exclaimed, completely sincere in her interest. She liked bees, and appreciated what they did for the environment, and the prospect of magical honey intrigued her. “Would you keep me informed of your progress?”

“Yes! It should be a really interesting thing, I’m excited to find out how it works out,” he said earnestly. “Of course!”

“Honey sounds lovely,” Daphne said with a smile. “I’ll take one of each, then, and a small jar of honey.” She tilted her head. “Do you beekeep as well? Or does the honey come from outside Sunnybrooke?”

“Alright, then, that can certainly be arranged,” Ira said with a smile. “Oh, I beekeep. I’ve got two hives doing the pollinating of my normal plants, and two hives pollinating my magical plants. I’ve been trying to see if the two honeys are radically different, but...they don’t seem to be, so far. But maybe I’ll have some magical honey in a few months. We’ll have to see.”

“Oh my goodness,” she cooed as she considered what he was saying. “Oh they would love that.” She was lucky this year with her students, all of them were curious and eager to learn. “Bees? Have you got some hives around? That is so amazing. I mean obviously they will need to be careful but I have one student in particular who is obsessed with bees…and ladybugs too.” 

“Yes! I have four hives,” he said, excitedly. “Oh-- not to worry, I’ll make sure they don’t sting,” Ira reassured her. “I can talk to animals, after all, I’ll keep them in check. I think it could be a fun experience.”

“I’ll most likely get some of both and see which works best,” Daphne decided. “Are they rather tasty?” She couldn’t imagine trying to get Jax to drink anything that wasn’t.

“Well, I certainly think that they are,” Ira said with a shrug. “At the very least, if all else fails, I do have some honey that I sell, and you can make it sweeter.”

“That’s cool. I wish I could do that, but then I’d probably be just as social with the plants and animals as I am with people, which isn’t very much at all. “

“Oh?” Ira said, with a small, puzzled frown. “Why aren't you more social?” Ira asked curiously. “There are so many interesting beings in this town, I think it would really behoove you to get to know some of them.”

“Oh my goodness, really?”  She grinned at the thought. “I’m sure they would completely love that.” She nodded as she considered this. “They are all very sweet and some of them are a little wild but for the most part they are well behaved.” 

“Yes, of course!” Ira said eagerly. “There’s so much for them to taste test in the ways of normal plants, and I have a good deal of magical plants that’ll be fun for them, as well, not to mention all the fun they can have with the bees...”

“Yes, I do,” she smiled as she listened to him. “I teach third grade, so 8 to 9 year olds. It’s a great age. I love it.” 

“Ohhhh,” Ira cooed, smiling. “That’s absolutely adorable. If you ever need field trip ideas, they can come by for a guided tour of the farm, maybe? That might be fun for them.”

“You are very welcome,” Luna smiled as she nodded her head. She listened as he spoke and she couldn’t help but smile as she tucked her hair behind her ear. “Sounds like you’ve got some good friends, and a good plan. I think that is a great idea. And enjoy the night and the stars. I love camping. I should do it more.” She nodded thoughtfully. “I’d like to take some of my students on a hiking trip before summer starts.” She nodded as she drummed her fingers against her chin. 

“Oh, do you teach?” Ira asked, excitedly. “I love kids-- how old are your students?”

“I definitely need something more boosted,” Daphne said with a soft laugh. “At least, that would be preferable. But tea sounds lovely, too. Perhaps I’ll get both!”

“I have some teas that I make with a blend of both magical and non-magical herbs that have certain magical properties, if you want some magic teas,” he said. “Or you can get some of both, I don’t mind getting more business!”

It wasn’t often that Daejung had a day off, especially now, with the Witching Hour to look after and the responsibilities of being the new High Warlock, so Daejung always made sure he fully enjoyed every second when he did get a chance to leave the club and do this own thing for a day. There wasn’t anything he liked better than walking around the Magic Shop; something about being around all the herbs and magical items made him feel closer to his father. They always used to practice potions in their kitchen, or his father would bring him a gift from the shop whenever he got the chance.

Daejung missed him terribly.

Strolling around the shelves, tightly packed together in the shop, Daejung leaned over the counters to smell the freshness of the mint leaves (it was his favourite scent, after all). He doesn’t notice the shop assistant, too lost in his own mind, his own problems, but his voice soon brings Daejung blinking back to reality. He smiles, soft, missing his usual enthusiasm. “Oh, um. Not really. Just… updating my magic cupboard.” He straightens up, wiggling the little bottles of frogs spawn in his hands, the only thing he really needed. “Sorry if I was rude before. Things on my mind.”

“No-- oh, no, don’t worry about it,” Ira said immediately, bright smile still on his face. He didn’t want to be rude to the High Warlock, after all-- and what with the new promotion, he was sure the other man was going to be in the shop more often. “Do let me know if you need help finding anything, or...or anything in particular. You making something with the frog spawn?” he asked curiously, motioning to the little bottle he was holding.

“1 am” he rubbed his hands on his pants a little “at least it was 1 when I got off from work, so it’s probably closer to 2 now. That’s pretty cool about the communication thing. Must come in pretty handy being a farmer. I have two plants at home, I’m not sure I’d be able to handle more than that.”

“Christ,” Ira said softly, laughing. “Yeah-- it’s really handy to have when you’re surrounded by plants all day. A lot of fun. I don’t actually have to see people to be social.”

“Good, I’m not sure I could actually carry you” Noah gave him a small smile “Not that you look heavy, I just don’t have the same strength most people around here do. So, you’re like a plants and animals empath? That’s pretty cool” He didn’t think he’d ever come across someone like that before, or if he had he hadn’t known it.

“That’s fair,” Ira said with a nod, humming softly to himself. “You’re...you look young too, I wouldn’t expect you to drag me to the other side of town at...whatever time it is now.” He nodded again, gazing out over the placid water of the lake. “Yeah. Empath is a good word for it. I can also communicate-- you know, give them certain energetic nudges, tell animals not to eat the plants on my farm, or make plants grow faster. Little things.”

“No, no – there’s got to be something around here somewhere for you. Hold on.” He heads behind the counter, looking high and low for anything he may have forgotten about earlier when the owner left. He hears the questions and hums as he thinks. “Ah – yes. Some people prefer just vanilla or chocolate, but there’s regulars that come in asking for that one in particular.” He spots an envelope and grabs it, reading it off before handing it off to Ira. “Here. This is yours. Sorry about the confusion.”

“You’d think, because they use my ingredients, that I’d have tried the flavors they make with them before, but...I haven't gotten around to it yet,” Ira said thoughtfully, taking the envelope and thanking him. “If it’s not too much trouble, can I have a scoop of the honey rhubarb, just to try? I’ll pay, of course.”
