My brother died ten years ago today. Sounds like such a fake thing to say. Ten years isn’t real. That’s not a real amount of time. Because I was just talking to him on the phone, you know? He’s just around the corner. I was just listening to him play guitar on the other side of his bedroom door.

Ten years is so long. And it’s true, that you just grow around your grief, but the grief itself doesn’t change. You change. And you get better at carrying it around. You get better at hiding it.

This year hurts so bad. The worst since the first couple. Something about ten years. Just so fucking long. But it was still yesterday. I just saw him. I was just talking to him.

He was just here.

I’m straddling two times, always: where my brother is and where he isn’t, and the space between is very short. The space between is just a door.

On this side is the music he left me. All the love he left me with. All the love I still and will always have for him.

And he is just on the other side. Playing a song, if I listen real hard.
