Rabastan was standing with his back against the wall, his eyes closed as he waited. His body was still shaking, and as much as he was trying to curb it, it was far too difficult. It was a lot for him to handle, but he wasn’t sure if he was still shaking about that, or if he was scared of Dorcas turning away from him for the first time in her life. Doe had been his everything, his best friend and so deeply embedded into his heart for a long time, and he couldn’t stand the thought of her leaving him. As he heard her voice, his eyes flickered open, but they didn’t lock with hers as they normally would. He couldn’t do this - not if he was looking into her eyes, and could see the love for him slipping away just like that.
“I killed a kid tonight.”
Dorcas knew where Rabastan’s loyalties laid for as long as she had known him. For the most part, she ignored it. They didn’t often speak about those sort of things when they were together. Both of them were blissfully ignorant of the other’s loyalties and it didn’t bother her in the slightest. When she laid her eyes upon Rabastan, she could tell that something was wrong immediately. He wouldn’t look at her and he was disheveled. He rarely looked like this. Something was terribly wrong.
She reached for him, but her hand dropped when he finally spoke and told her. Dorcas could feel the air rush out of her lungs in a gasp, her hand covering her mouth, dark eyes widening. How could he do something like this and then tell her so casually? Like it was nothing?
“I... you what? I wish I could ask if you were joking, but I can tell that you’re not. How could you do something like that Rabastan?”
