Gideon tried very hard not to focus too hard on the dark water that surrounded them- that lapped up around his waist, sending goosebumps scattering across the pale, freckled torso. Even with the heating charm, there skin prickled, the hair on his arms standing almost straight up, more out of nerves than out of any actual coldness. Remus was speaking- something about the shallowness of the water-- not that it really mattered; one can drown in a teaspoon of water, if one were to get technical. But Gideon kept these thoughts to himself, the mantra repeating in his mind that he absolutely did not under any circumstances want to appear afraid in front of Remus-- particularly when it came to something like swimming. Something that was supposed to be practically second nature. Or at least it appeared that way with Remus.
Oh, gods- what had he gotten himself into?
Remus' calloused hands found his under the water and the initial brush of fingers against his caused him to jump slightly before the warmth found his hands and the gentle tugging swayed any inclination to run. Alright, he didn't particularly like to admit it, but the reassuring weight and grip of Remus' hands on his was definitely helpful. He could feel himself start to relax- the lines that creased his forehead and the slight frown that pulled at his mouth easing until they were gone. The feeling of Remus' hands holding onto his sent a strange feeling of reassurance- of safety and security- through him. The lap of water around his chest didn't even register until Remus' words found their way into his ears.
That's when it hit him- the water was around his chest. A few more steps and it would be up around his neck and then- then he would fall under and he wouldn't be able to breathe and no matter how loud he screamed, no one would hear him- the water would swallow his cries for help and then he'd sink like a stone. He swallowed hard, trying to keep the tightening panic from gripping his chest, from keeping him from breathing. A hand lifted from under the water and for a moment, the panic paused in it's assault as another soft, slow and reassuring murmur came from Remus.
'Not gonna let you drown- we aren't even going to go deep.'
Yes. Remus-- Remus wasn't going to let him drown. He would... Remus would take care of him. Protect him. An unbidden flush crept up his neck and across his neck and Gideon swallowed hard, looking down at the dark water, trying to calm the almost fluttering beat of his heart at the thoughts that swirled around in his head, trying to remind himself what he was there for and that he was making a simple statement into something it wasn't and really, when did he become such a puff? Remus' hand dropped his and the panic that gripped his chest started to slowly spread as Remus moved further back- further into the dark water- watching as it slowly rose to cover his shoulders and gods, Remus wasn't much taller than him but he was taller nonetheless and how deep was that going to be for him?
The hand reached out to him and Gideon swallowed hard, listening to the words. Don't panic. Don't. Panic. Paddling around. He could do that. The fleeting thought of just how stupid he was going to look crossed his mind, deepening the heat across his cheeks before he steeled himself and lifted his feet from the muddy surface under the water- and launched himself forward. His legs and churned under him in a desperate attempt at keeping his head above the water- only succeeding in making him look very much like a half-drowned fox as his flailing. Panic gripped him and his feet moved, trying to find something like solid ground under him and his arms reached, one hand finding and gripping the outstretched arm- gripping Remus' elbow in a vise grip, pulling himself close and tight to the only solid thing in the lake. The edges of panic disappeared from his face as he looked up at Remus, sheepishness creeping across his expression, "I-- er, wow. I'm. That was bad. I--" He looked at the way his hands gripped tight at Remus' arms, holding himself there and heat flushed his face all the way to his ears, "Sorry- Sorry, I--"
