Proud to present my ancient (and later echo) oc: Untouched Ocean, Crowding Clouds! They’re (yes, they’re nonbinary, and YES it’s a pun, sue me idc) an anti-ai environmental scientist and animal rights activist. This spectacular art of them is courtesy of the ever-so talented and skilled @doktoptaxa, thanks again, mate! :)
They were born and raised in Outskirts to a rather poor lower-middle-class family as an (accidental) only child, named Dewdrops at Dawn (and assigned female at birth, though they later transitioned to a man, then finally settled on identifying as nonbinary after realizing neither suited them and they preferred to be gender-neutral). Despite the struggles of raising them as an already unfortunate family, DaD’s parents did their very best to raise them with all the love, support, and care they could provide. Wanting to offer their child the best life possible and fuel their passion for science that they had expressed since an early age, DaD’s parents managed to land them an internship at the bioengineering factory in Industrial Complex when they came of age.
Despite a lack of quality education, DaD—talented, intelligent, and ambitious—was considered a gifted student that showed great potential, and was soon appointed as an official apprentice to an ancient whose duty to study, alter, breed, raise, and train lizards, which is where DaD developed their love for the creatures. They harbored a fondness for all the flora and fauna of their world, but lizards held a special place in their heart.
DaD’s first professional assignment was to develop an entirely new, unique and useful breed of lizard—a test they had to pass to earn their title, rank, and mask, which would ensure better social standing for them and their family. Due to the system set in place by the wealthy and powerful, peasants had to work twice as hard as nobles to reach even half as far, especially in such important affecting fields.
And after cycles upon cycles of trial and error, they managed to produce the very first caramel lizard, in the form of an egg. The intention was to create a lizard that was strong and durable enough to help with the harvests in Farm Arrays. Peasants (including DaD’s mother and father) were forced to work the fields for several cycles at a time in grueling conditions (heavy snowfall and dangerous predators) with little resources to aid them (lack of food, water, shelter, and tools) and barely any payment for their labor. To achieve this, the lizard had to be large, heavy, and muscular. Too bulky for vultures to carry off or the wormgrass to seize and consume, and burly enough to fend off predators, till the soil for the planting of crops, and withstand the blizzards. But they also had to be mobile enough to travel throughout the region, and able to catch prey and feed themselves. After collecting and combining samples of green and red lizard DNA (with a few tweaks, such as the addition of an extra pair of limbs and the removal of the hostile brain reaction gene), the product was deemed complete and approved by the authorities. The caramel lizard imprinted on DaD upon hatching and was named Bulldozer. She soon developed a personality: playful, loyal, silly, loving, afternoon naps in the sunshine, and having an appetite massive enough to rival the size of a Leviathan. Following their passing of the exam, Dewdrops at Dawn earned their official adult name: Untouched Ocean, Crowding Clouds. This name proved to be very fitting, almost to the point of being ironic, considering the subsequent events.
UOCC’s childhood and early adult life occurred prior to the construction of Five Pebbles, and so the only iterator in the area was Looks to the Moon. The rainfall was not as bad as it is in current-day in-game due to LttM being an older, simpler, and smaller model, so most of the surrounding area had a temperate climate, with the outskirts experiencing snowfall and blizzards. But following the construction of FP, suddenly the rain was everywhere and worse than ever before, killing anything caught in it almost instantly (and very painfully). FP’s superstructure’s construction resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives (even if the cycle system ensured they would be reborn/revived), necessary resources, extreme environmental damage and destruction, and immensely altered the ecosystem.
UOCC had already been anti-iterator even prior to these changes, but they were absolutely recasted and completely furious following them. Forced to bear witness to their friends and family paying the price, species of plant and animal going extinct, and the very ground they walked upon being reshaped. Knowing that only those at the top of the hierarchy could make a difference, UOCC persisted in their work and studies, determined to rise up the rankings and put an end to all the nonsensical suffering.
UOCC wrote and published books and scrolls, articles and essays, explaining their standing and opposition of the Iterators for the public to read and consider. They hosted events—speeches and protests—and offered alternative options, hoping to change the minds of the benefactors. Alas, their efforts were in vain, though they never conceded.
For a low-born peasant lacking proper education and hailing from a small family, UOCC clawed their way up the ladder of the social network surprisingly and impressively quickly with their incredible work and established connections, and were granted special privileges with this. Fame, wealth, and influence, though they cared for none of it. UOCC donated much of their money to their less fortunate neighbors in Outskirts, providing them with better housing, education, clothing, food, and medical care and used the other half to fund research for environmental improvement and adjustment. They acted as the head of a small team of scientists that embarked on expeditions through regions to collect data via field research—which led them to meeting their future wife: a respected warrior woman named Shining Sword and Sparkling Shield Against an Onslaught of Evil who accompanied them as their bodyguard. Despite their differences in lifestyle, attitude, social status and behavior, the two soon married.
UOCC discovered an unmapped and uninhabited area outside of iterator influence: Outer Expanse. They founded the first small settlement there, using it as a place of refuge for the ancients affected by the pollution and climate change of the superstructures (and couldn’t afford the housing atop them), as well as a nature preserve for several species of flora and fauna, slowly but surely bringing them back from the brink of extinction with their efforts. UOCC was held in such high regard by their community that a mural was made in their honor, complete with Bulldozer at their side (the art made by @doktoptaxa as seen above near the top of the post, is intended to resemble the in-game ancient murals). The mural has long since faded and is no longer visible, but the thought is still an appreciated one by UOCC’s echo.
UOCC harbored such a fierce and intense love for their world and an immensely strong desire to help it heal that when the time came for the mass ascension (an event that angered UOCC since it proved that the iterators weren’t needed in the first place at all and all of their problems could have been avoided), they were unable to leave the plane of existence behind, too tied back by Companionship and Survival to do so.
They instead reformed as an echo, located at the very top of the tallest tree in Outer Expanse, where UOCC spent countless cycles observing the land beneath them and how its inhabitants fared without the ancients’ influence. They were pleasantly surprised by how the wildlife adapted and evolved to survive and even thrive in the harsh new conditions of the world without their help. They especially enjoyed watching the slugcats and scavengers, and their unique, unusual ways of interacting with their world—even developing karma.
When the era of Saint arrived and almost all superstructures had collapsed, the world had miraculously begun to heal from the damage and a path was paved for a new era. It was witnessing this that caused UOCC to finally and truly ascend, and reunite with their loved ones in the void.
Also, some extra information and fun facts: UOCC is a vegetarian and is pansexual. They use an androgynous voice, dress in a unisex fashion, and use exclusively they/them pronouns in disregard of gender. Their wife is a butch lesbian. UOCC was primarily responsible for the development of cyan and yellow lizards as species and also uncovered and dismantled an illegal lizard mill that bred and raised lizards (specifically red lizards) to fight each other to the death. They’re a total bookworm, and although they primarily read (and write) science fiction and history scrolls, they also enjoy stories about action and mystery, and maybe a romance novel here and there. They funded orphanages, hospitals, schools, markets, and libraries in their prime time. Ironically, despite their name, UOCC is deathly afraid of heights and deep water (though the topic of what may secretly reside in the seas does interest them). And last but not least, they owned two twin cyans named Sizzle and Snap and a pack of thirty-five yellow lizards. I associate the passages The Survivor, The Monk, The Saint, The Friend, and The Scholar with them the most.
So I had this idea in mind for a few days, redrawing ending cutscene illustrations from RW as a background practice. Every time I do full scene illustrations the rendering is different...
The original (from the game directly, this artwork does not belong to me):
ok good sir u seem to be really into rw rn so here’s some questions for u. what is ur fav…
slugcat
iterator
lizard
creature
echo
region
passage
campaign
slugcat ship
iterator ship
and ur LEAST fav of those respectively
That is one big question, it reminded me of how a few years ago I was in a GC where a guy would constantly ask new people about their favorite pokemon stuff like this.
Slugcat? Probably Gourmand and Spearmaster right now. Gourmand was my first Downpour campaign and I really enjoy the character, even though the campaign was kinda boring (I'm guilty for not using the crafting ability too much), and Spearmaster has a very interesting story. The least favorite one is probably Saint because I don't like their design too much and their campaign is just pure pain (started yesterday).
Iterator? Might be Moon, but I don't really have favs here. Don't have a least favorite one either.
Lizard? Caramel and cyan. Caramels are a cuter version of reds, I love these chunky critters. Cyans just have an overall interesting design, and I grew fond of them because I have a mod that lets you and other critters go "yipee" whenever they do long jumps and backflips, so cyans constantly scream distorted "yipee" whenever I encounter them... Least fav one is definitely white. Mostly because they're annoying as hell.
Creature? I really, really like dropwigs. They are CUTE. Adorable. I love how smart they are, and their design is pleasing. I just really like bugs okay. And the least favorite creature is coalescipedes, such annoying freaks. But it's a very interesting concept, hivemind spiders!
Echo? Doubt I have favorites here... Surely they all have different personalities and stuff but I don't have a favorite or least favorite here.
Region? Metropolis for sure! I always loved the background of the top of the 5P and was glad to be able to explore that place in Downpour. If you can call constantly running from scavengers "exploring"... I also liked Outer Expanse and LttM in Spearmaster's campaign very much. The regions I liked the least are for sure Drainage system and The exterior... And maybe Shaded citadel
Passage? Well, I doubt I have a fav here either. Which one is the most fun to obtain? Hard to say.
Campaign? Rivulet. Just Rivulet. I had fun parkouring all the time and it brings me a lot of adrenaline running to shelters in such short periods of time! I didn't get to go to Memory cripts but if I did it would probably be such a hell and might've turn me against liking Riv's campaign x) right now I'm playing Saint and I really hate this.
Slugcat ship? Artificer x Gourmand so far. I know they live in different time periods but they have an interesting dynamic! Least favorite... not like I've seen much.
Iterator ship? I don't really ship any of them, I didn't even think of that honestly. I'm no big shipper in general
Clarifying this for comment section: I haven't completed Saint, Inv and Watcher yet, please restrain from spoilers
