HE IS HEALED
[ ✚ ] all is now harmed
As much as Jack wanted to interrupt, he let Angela speak, keeping his expression calm and even. He understood her morals, he really did–which was why he didn’t understand why she couldn’t try to see things from his perspective. He looked down for a moment as he sighed at her refusal, blue eyes trained on the floor before he looked back up to meet her eyes. “I wouldn’t see it as a waste of time. I want everyone who’s a part of Overwatch to be as prepared and safe as they can be. And I–I don’t want to shoot people. It’s not like I enjoy it,” he clarified, figuring that she probably phrased it that way due to the language barrier–but he wanted to make sure, just in case. “It’s just… you don’t always have a lot of options.”
He paused another moment, running his tongue over his lips before reaching for a pen, only toying with it in his hands rather than actually doing anything productive with it. “Dr. Ziegler, please understand. You’re very important to our organization. You’re important to the world. Your progress in medicine, in nanobiology–you’re an invaluable asset here. I’m sorry, but I can’t allow you to enter combat zones without proper self defense training. If you insist on being a field medic and a first responder, this is necessary. I mean…” he sighed, fingers moving to twist the cap of the pen, though he stopped when it made an irritating squeaking sound, looking it over for a moment before gingerly returning it to its place. “I know you joined Overwatch to help people, but if something happened to you on the field, how will you help people then? The people of the world need your work, Dr. Ziegler. It isn’t about prioritizing your life over the enemy’s–or… or the person threatening your life, regardless of how you or I might view them. It’s the lives of everyone you could help with this work,” he concluded, looking to meet her eyes again in desperation that his point had come across and the doctor would agree to his terms. He wasn’t folding on this, and it was as simple as that.
Angela couldn't help but throw Jack a sceptical look as he claimed he 'didn't enjoy it', wondering if that was the absolute truth. She wasn't ignorant to how the military--and Overwatch--attracted the kind of people who did found a thrill in violence and ideals of justice. If he didn't want to shoot people then he would have stopped--being neutral in your disgust towards murder wasn't exactly redeeming in Angela's eyes either. Still, Jack clearly hadn't come here to argue over the morality of war and violence, even though the conversation was dangerously close to becoming that anyway.
Some of what Jack said made sense to her, but she also felt that it wasn't a strong enough argument for her to pick up a gun. Of course, she had been the one to pioneer nanobiology at rates it hadn't been used before--but that didn't mean there weren't others would could build on her research if she was suddenly gone. It was difficult to think of herself as indispensable when her childhood had taught her otherwise, embracing the idea that she could die at any moment had kind of become her thing. "I can't," Angela replied, quiet and somewhat defeated as the memory of her parents came to mind--something Angela didn't feel ready to disclose to Jack, or anyone else for that matter. Sounding weak in her resolve wasn't the doctor's intention either, shifting slightly so that her back was straighter and her voice firmer. "I don't want to," Angela corrected, baby blues flicking back up to Jack's own with a steady gaze. She was curious about how much leverage the Strike Commander would give her too, knowing that one of them would have to concede to the other and that her own superiority only went so far in comparison to Jack's.
ooc; so i travelled from england to america to see my gf (redwhiteand 😜) last week and i didn't think i'd be offline for so long but i've been busy and sleepy hAha so i will work on replies and such over the weekendddddd. the 'leaked' memo from mercy on the sniper rifle has given me so many headcanon ideas i'll probably write up a post later on too!!!
I imagine a lot of the OW members probably had a thing for the doc at some point in their lives but what if Angela pushed them all away? Especially after the fall of OW. ———————————————————————————— Patreon ¦ Commissions ¦ Donate ¦ Shop¦ Twitter ¦ Facebook

Even though Jack had been formal with her, the returned formality of her reply felt uncomfortable–though his last name wasn’t exactly overly formal, he still preferred his nickname. But it couldn’t be forced. He paused after she spoke for a moment, wondering if she would actually make eye contact with him at some point–and after a moment longer, she did, Jack smiling automatically as their eyes met. Still, there was much to be handled, and he doubted either of them would be smiling by the end of it.
“I’m well also,” he returned, tugging the corners of his lips a bit higher as he tried to subtly lean forwards and figure out what she was looking at. Science had never been a strong suit of his–he wasn’t sure why he was even bothering. “But–I do have something I need to speak with you about, Dr. Ziegler. I don’t think you like my masking my point with smalltalk and formalities, so I’ll get down to it.” He gave her a moment to digest that, his brows furrowing as he looked off. “I think that it’s been discussed before, but we haven’t come to a resolution. As a first responder, if you insist on being one, we can’t–I can’t have you out of the field defenseless,” he reiterated, emphasizing his own feelings towards it so she would take it more seriously and not view it as a policy she didn’t intend to follow. “Ideally, we would be able to keep you safe. But the heat of battle can be unpredictable, and I don’t want you getting hurt.”
He paused again to let that sink in, though he was sure not to linger too long–if he did, he knew he’d hear an uproar from the doctor was she was given the chance. “I’d like to teach you to shoot. Just something basic, like a side arm. I don’t you to be caught alone. This way, if something happens, you can protect yourself. That makes sense, doesn’t it?”
Angela smiled politely in response to Jack, carefully regarding him as he became more honest about why he'd suddenly showed up. It already seemed that she wouldn't be picking up her work again any time soon, sighing internally at how it was going to be spent debating with the Strike Commander instead. She should have guessed why the man had turned up, considering they had already spoken about this topic--but it had seemed like forever ago in comparison to how much work she had to do now. While Jack might have thought that using a gun was a priority, Angela certainly didn't. The idea was totally unappealing despite how Jack tried to phrase it as being in her best interests--Angela hadn't joined Overwatch to kill, even if it would have been safer for her. Although she knew Jack was a good person--and the only person she probably would have trusted with this--it didn't make the idea any more appealing to her. It wasn't any secret that she was deeply opposed to all forms of violence and she wasn't sure what else Jack was expecting from her.
"It would make sense if I had--if I--" Angela cut herself off as she tried to figure out what she was saying in English, eyebrows knitting together in concentration. Although she was almost fluent now, it was still difficult to express herself when she was passionate about something--either gushing over research papers in rushed Swiss or becoming defensive over her beliefs. "If I wanted to shoot someone," she settled on, even though it wasn't as sharp as she would have worded it in her native tongue--which was probably a good thing, considering she had managed to argue with Jack before. "I would not ever use a gun; it would be a waste of our time."

There had never been any debate over the fact that Overwatch was a dangerous organization. Originating as a task force to combat the omnic crisis and now active across the globe as a peace keeping force, it was inevitable that it’s recruits would see their share of combat in order to help the world reach that peace. Which is why they were doing this.
Granted, as Head of Medical Research, only basic self defense in the event of an attack on their base really seemed necessary. But with Dr. Ziegler so insistant on being a first responder and helping as many people as she could, Jack couldn’t comfortably send her into a war zone without some training. Yes, it was true that she probably wouldn’t be alone, but it wasn’t impossible that she would get separated from the others, or the people protecting her would come to injury and be unable to do so. Angela’s research and progress in nanology made her an invaluable asset to Overwatch, but that wouldn’t have mattered. Jack couldn’t stomach sending her into combat untrained whether she was Head of Medical Research or an aide who barely knew how to apply a bandage.
Fortunately, no one thought it was a waste of time or resources to train her–not that Jack would have listened if they did. The benefits of being Strike Commander included being able to ask for advice and then choosing to ignore said advice. Still, though Angela finally spoke enough English that she no longer needed a translator, she was still not familiar with a lot of the staff, and Jack didn’t want to send just anyone to teach her.
So he headed into her office, flashing her a smile before glancing around the room, relieved that she didn’t seem to have any patients at the moment. He knew she could become very entangled in her research, but his chances of getting her to do something if she had an actual person depending on her were slim to none. “Dr. Ziegler,” he greeted, nodding politely. “How are you doing today?” Best to warm her up with camaraderie first–she was going to be opposed to the idea, he was sure of it, but she’d be even harder to talk to if he didn’t at least make sure she was in a good mood first. “I hope we’re not keeping you too busy!”
Although Angela had been sceptical about joining Overwatch, the appeal of their technology had certainly been a factor in persuading her to join. However, what had really blown her away was the amount of information she was now able to access–the doctor had thought that the university library had been large, so she was totally overwhelmed by the sudden access to global records, research and documentation. The surprise had only lasted a few moments before Angela had seized the opportunity, throwing herself into reading everything that could possibly be relevant to the progression of her own nanobiology research–in between dealing with real patients, of course. Working for Overwatch certainly wasn’t easy, but the challenge and intellectual stimulation was like nothing she had ever experienced before and nothing she could ever experience again.
The sound of someone coming into the lab took Angela by surprise for a moment, so engrossed her in work that the footsteps sounded overwhelmingly loud. Her vision flicked away from nucleotides to golden hair, instantly recognising the Strike Commander but not entirely sure why he was entering. Part of her was tempted to disregard him and continue with her reading–it was rare to get a moment alone, with no patients or assistants to attend to–but she knew better than to ignore someone, even if he didn’t particularly look like there was an emergency anywhere.
“Morrison,” Angela greeted him in response, regarding the man carefully. She certainly didn’t have an appointment with him and he wasn’t due one either–not that Jack would attend on time if he did. “I’m very well thank you; busy is preferable to idle. Yourself?” Even if Angela had no idea why Jack was here, she was starting to get the suspicion that he probably wanted something from her. There were already certain members who she knew it was best just to say she was always tremendously busy to–after all, Angela had joined Overwatch to serve the injured, not engage in organisational interests. However, it wasn’t often that Jack asked anything of her and he was–mostly–easy to get along with. Deciding that she could at least hear him out, Angela let the DNA structures she’d been studying rest on the desk instead, finally giving the Strike Commander her full attention.

It takes Lena what might be an uncomfortably long time to respond, at least for her. Her ears are still ringing at the moment and, frankly, the blast had kind of jostled her mind around a little. After what seems like a minute she finally registers that words are being spoken to her. Not sure exactly what, but it’s definitely something– more of an echo.
Lena opens her eyes and everything is initially fuzzy. Brows knitting together, she blinks a few times behind her goggles. Soon enough the world gains clarity. Enough to comprehend what’s around her, at least.
She sees an angel.
“…Come again?” She squints as if that will somehow make her hearing better.
Every moment that Lena doesn't respond is another that Angela is running through potential injuries and repercussions, evaluating and diagnosing to administer the most appropriate intervention as quickly as possible. Although the doctor has learned to put aside the fact she's treating colleagues and friends, it's somewhat harder with Lena because the woman radiates so much warmth and energy that the loss is immediately noticeable--unnerving.
Lena finally talks and Angela lets out a breath she wasn't aware she was holding.
"Lena, what happened? Where are you hurt?"

It seemed the boom egg mystery would indeed remain that, Jack smiling again at her words. “If you ever take a trip there again I suppose you could just ask the reason. But if it’s an airport place instead of an actual establishment the staff might not know. Assuming any of them would know anyway… Eggs don’t really look like booms to me,” he mused, starting to wonder at the mystery himself, even if not quite as passionately as Angela.
Naturally, vegan seemed like the very definition of fussy to Jack, even if he could see the morals behind her choice in cuisine. On the contrary, with so few vegan options, it seemed like the best thing to do was to broaden your horizons–but he supposed having a limited menu didn’t make him prefer munching on vegetables only anymore than it would with her. He took a moment to try and remember what pomfrit were as well, furrowing his brows as he tried to recall without asking. “Most people in America like their french fries salty. And most corporations like to make them salty so we spend more on drinks,” he smiled, pleased that he’d remembered what it meant–or he hoped he had, at least. “You just don’t appreciate our fine American comfort meals.”
Even if he’d said it as a joke, there was something nostalgic even just talking about it. He remembered King David Dogs like he remembered a lot of Indiana. He remembered Arlington, where Angela must have been–he remembered the way the air had smelled in the fields, picking ticks off his legs, and seeing people driving off in their tractors, but he didn’t remember it as clearly as he would have liked. He was a bit envious even, that Angela had visited when he hadn’t been there in so long. But at the end of the day, he couldn’t go back–Jack Morrison was dead. After a moment too long of silence, he looked towards Angela, narrowing his eyes before lightly reaching for her arm and nodding towards the buildings. “You’re startin’ to turn pretty red. Should we go back in? Or find some shade, at least?”

Even when you can manipulate your position in time you’re always bound by the fact that everything has to run its course. Even luck eventually runs out.
Usually Lena is able to right herself pretty quickly. Speed is her game, after all. Even in the event that she can’t- well then she’s got a hefty chronal accelerator strapped to her at all times to deal with that problem. This, however, is a bit of an anomaly.
She was just giggling up a storm and having a good time a minute ago. Maybe that’s why the blast caught her off guard. If anyone knows the importance of a minute it’s Lena. The explosion of energy hits her from behind, sending her rocketing into the side of a nearby building. The sharp corner (one can assume) does a number on her shoulder and the blast itself isn’t exactly doing great things for the rest of her.
Her ears are ringing. Her brain is working overtime to process even the smallest thoughts. She can’t move. This isn’t fun anymore.
One of the hardest parts of being a responder is trying to keep visuals on everyone at the same time.
Not only does Angela have to make sure she knows exactly what her team is doing, but she had to anticipate where the enemy might strike next in order to soak up as much damage as possible. Although Angela tries not to prioritise certain members over others, it wouldn't be a lie to point out that there are members who can fair well without much intervention. The doctor is more than accustomed to Lena being here, there and everywhere--never stopping long enough for Angela to do much than skim her wounds. Although it had been nerve-wrecking when Lena had first joined--and it was a miracle Angela hadn't murdered her for being so careless--it was normality now.
There's a noise from somewhere above them, but Angela doesn't focus on it at first-- at least not until the brief sounds of particles being displaced suddenly stops. The doctor takes that as her cue to drop back a little, attention focused on Lena as her eyes quickly scan every surface within her field of vision. There's a flicker of orange atop one of the buildings, which is all Angela needs to change direction.
Gliding onto the roof is easy enough; she's somewhat aware that an enemy could be nearby but her hands only rest on her gun, never pulling it from the holster. "Lena?" Angela calls out, kneeling by the woman's side and immediately weighing up her injuries, movements automatic. "Can you hear me?"

As hard as it was to just say to move on and then do it, at the end of the day, talking about it wasn’t giving either of them closure; it felt more like reopening old wounds that hadn’t had the chance to scar over yet. He didn’t want to drag things out and make things more uncomfortable for either of them–if Angela was willing to forgive or move on, Jack was happy enough to accept that. It was just going to be another matter to move on himself as well.
Jack smiled faintly as she nudged him, well aware that she would probably like to know as little as possible about what he’d been up to. He didn’t think saying that he hadn’t killed or even seriously injured anyone during his acts of ‘terrorism,’ but he didn’t think that it would make much of a difference to her. Or at least, a big enough difference that she’d want to hear about it. “I care about it, I just don’t understand it so well,” he defended weakly–but he knew she was passionate about her work, and listening to her talk about it wasn’t the worst thing. Trying to carry a conversation about it was another matter. Though she’d designed methods for him to use her nanology, he didn’t claim to understand it. All he knew was that it sped up the healing process enough to make a difference–which didn’t exactly make for an equal conversation.
“Not everyone in America speaks like me, you were in Indiana so… if you’d gone to Boston or Houston they’d be speaking a little differently.” At the name of the franchise, Jack smiled, slightly more genuine than any of his previous smiles had been, and once Angela started naming menu items it even reached his eyes, his crow’s feet crinkling in amusement. “Well, a lot of hot dog places are like that. But I can’t say what makes eggs ‘booms’… the chickens I grew up with weren’t exactly booming and neither were their eggs. And you couldn’t have had a Darlin’ Dog even if they did have them, darlin’,” he teased back; it was easier to keep this light when Angela was giggling away over hot dog names, shaking his head at her despite himself. “They even have any kind of food for you there, Ange? I can’t remember too many vegan places back home–but I guess I wasn’t really looking for them, either.”
It was good to have Jack tease her back, falling back into the pitter patter of how their conversation had been before everything had gone wrong. It was so good to see him smile again too, feeling as if maybe she'd done something to make them both feel better. More than that, it was nice to hear him call her 'darlin' again--something that she had yet to hear him say to anyone else. It was just another small reassurance that they were still close friends but it was also enough for her to finally stop worrying about that too. It also meant that--momentarily--they were able to put the issues with Gabriel to the side, even if Angela knew they were going to flare up all over again later on.
"Ah, it looks like the great boom egg mystery shall forever remain that," Angela pouted, still far more curious about the answer than she probably should have been. She also didn't want to admit to Jack that she'd already tried to Google the answer, to no avail. "No, there wasn't much vegan food at all," she admitted, although the arguments they'd previously had about meat had already set her expectations of Indiana quite low. It seemed that meat had been important to Jack, but she'd never realised how many different ways there were to serve it until she was cluelessly looking around an airport. "But I could eat as many pomfrit as I wanted! Which wasn't really a lot, why are they so salty? I've been to so many places now and I think the food I had there was probably the worst. Then again, I'm not very fond of Gibralta's either. You wouldn't think that a vegan would be so fussy!" She laughed, sure that Jack would have something to say about that.

Lúcio was relieved that she didn’t seem to mind his intrusion. He took a moment to observe the room, fortunately he and Dr, Ziegler were its only occupants. “Its great to finally meet you,” Grinning, he placed his sonic amplifier onto a nearby counter. Extending his newly freed hand he continued, “Lúcio’s the name.” He didn’t think to mention his last name, as it wasn’t even part of the title on his wikipedia page. Even with his own celebrity, he was unsure of whether or not she’d heard of him. If she did know of him it would likely be for the uprising he started rather than his music career.
It surprised Lúcio that she was so open to questioning, but then again he hadn’t mentioned the true topic of his questions yet. “I said I’m new here, but truthfully I am not even a real agent yet,” he admitted. “They’ve got a stack of paperwork waiting for me down at registration,” he gestured out the door. “But I can’t sign it until I know what Overwatch is really about, ya feel? Don’t get me wrong I believe in the cause, when was kid you guys were my heroes,” he chuckled briefly before his expression hardened. “But I’m not a kid anymore and I’m about to let another organization control me. What I mean is I’ve heard the rumors about Blackwatch. I never wanted to believe them back then but these days, I can deny the possibility. So before I join I gotta know if it’s all true.”
There was definitely something to Lúcio that made Angela want to smile, instantly caught up in his positive energy. She had no qualms with shaking his hand, looking him over with amusement. However, skipping out on paperwork wasn't exactly the kind of standard that Overwatch as setting--even if the man seemed like he meant no harm. Before she could scold him on that point, Lúcio's words made her pause. It wasn't often that Angela could see herself in her colleagues, maybe most akin to Winston and yet not very similar to him at all. Lúcio took her thoughts back to when she had first joined Overwatch, skeptical and critical. She'd never backed down from voicing her issues with the organisation, somewhat pleased that it seemed there was still a generation of like-minded people. Even if Angela had become fond of the man in a number of minutes, she still knew the boundaries of what she could or couldn't say. It wasn't professional to discuss her honest thoughts with a man who wasn't technically even enlisted yet, leaving Angela to purse her lips together as she carefully picked her next words.
"Blackwatch certainly existed, yes--but it was disbanded in the fall of Overwatch. I'm afraid I couldn't tell you much about it as there wasn't much reason for me to be involved with it." While that wasn't strictly true, Angela also didn't see any reason to explain the complicated relationship she'd had with Gabriel. She certainly had her own ideas about what Blackwatch had been doing, pieced together by the talks they'd had and the information she knew in hindsight, but that was simply speculation. More than that, the doctor wasn't exactly desperate to inform others of her friendship with Gabriel either. "There were certainly rumours but.. Either way, it's not active now. I doubt it will be ever again." It was difficult to stop her voice from becoming too strained, but Angela tried not to let her own personal bias bleed through too much.
