I'm gonna actually mention about my HC'd ages for them too, cos imo I hate Squadra's fanon ages, it doesn't make sense that Diavolo would put so much "faith" on a bunch of 20-24 year olds to be hitmen
Prosciutto - 29-31
I feel that his childhood was eerily similar to Fugo's, always being pushed to be better, to be perfect even when he isn't. There's always that expectation to be the best in his class, the best at everything. And if he didn't he would be beaten to do better.
Eventually he just... got sick of trying. He stopped being the best after he got into university and eventually dropped out, unfortunately that meant being outright kicked out by his family. Probably also being left in a very bad way. But he ended up on the streets, going from a life of riches to nothing in a night. And whether he got scooped up by the mafia or it was just a run in with the arrow, he's not the type to tell people, but everyone just assumes he was doing something fucked up prior even when he wasn't. He doesn't clarify. Fear is a weapon he uses frequently...
And he becomes the person he once hated, lashing out for Pesci to do better, scolding him, hitting him. Because that's how he grew up, it's all he knows. He knows he's a monster, but he doesn't know how not to be anymore.
Pesci - 23 - 26
Oh boy, okay.. He did not have a good childhood, at all. For the vast majority he was beaten and treat like he was nothing until he began to believe it, he walked on eggshells around his family and it didn't matter anyway. He would be punished for every single wrong thing, regardless of if it was his fault or not.
Around 17/18 either his family abandoned him or he was thrown out. And within 3 months he was picked up by Prosciutto on a chance meeting, and the only reason Prosciutto did is because he saw parts of himself in Pesci. Parts he wanted to drown and destroy, because they make him weak... But he doesn't hurt Pesci, not initially. He takes him with him and makes him watch as Prosciutto kills his parents. To "Toughen him up"
Unfortunately for Pesci he was so used to not being cared for, that him doing this made him feel loved. Someone finally cared enough to help, and that toxic connection happened on that night. He's strong enough to snap Prosciutto like a twig.. But he's the only one that loves him, so he doesn't. He just lets him hurt him under the guise of care.
Because he's never understood the difference between love and pain anyway, so what's a little more?
Risotto - 27/28
We know why he joined but I think he's the only one that actually had a loving family, and that makes it worse. His family genuinely adored him, only to lose him to vengeance.
He leaves to find the man that killed his cousin and doesn't stop there, he doesn't get jailed for what he did because he was never actually found. But he doesn't go home, he turned to crime, anything he could until eventually he was found by another mafia member when he was 17/18 and taken straight to Polpo.
And he doesn't believe the Mafia is right, he hates it... but he has no choice. It was that or die alone on the streets.
Illuso - 22-24
He didn't have a bad family, they kinda just... didn't care. They never hit him, or even gave him substantial reason for him to hate them, they fed him, clothed him, occasionally loved him. But he was just... there.
The issue was school, and other kids. He was relentlessly bullied for every single aspect about himself, his timid personality, his family, that he wasn't always clean.. He wasn't picked up by the mafia, it was a run in with either the arrow or Black Sabbath, just an accident. And it doesn't entirely change who he is, not immediately, he just uses MITM as an escape. He uses his realm as control, forcing himself to be alone because it's less lonely if he's choosing it..
But it was never that easy, eventually he snaps, kills someone and tries to hide only to get jailed before he can. And then he breaks out using his stand, lives on the run for a few months before being sought out by mafia in a sort of symbiosis. He's been causing them issues, so just work for them instead. And he does, because he feels wanted.
He reinvents his entire persona of how people see him, force people to hate you, to fear you. Use it like armour, and it can never be used to hurt you.
Ghiaccio - 26-30
No.. this man was not a figure skater, lmao..
His family wasn't... the best to Ghia, they treat him like a monster when he started lashing out. And it started small, occasionally yelling about things, snapping back, not just allowing people to walk all over him like he used to. Everyone just assumed it was hormones, just a kid thing. But Ghiaccio was depressed, deeply, entirely... And eventually that sadness, that numbness shattered into anger. And people still didn't care.
I do genuinely believe that Ghiaccio eventually snapped when one of his parents tried to hit him, or worse. And he killed them both. Not because he wanted to, but it was the only defence he had. Protect himself or be hurt again... Unfortunately his anger only got worse from there in his grief and hatred for himself, lashing out at everyone and anything until he lunged for the wrong person.
Whether it was a member of Squadra or not, it doesn't matter, he held his own against a stand user to the point where it impressed one of them enough to hold them back from killing him.
But of course, he wanted to stick it to the man and during Polpo's test, he closed the lighter in front of him and told him to "Eat shit." It made Polpo laugh, genuinely laugh, so he didn't kill him. Just threw him in with "the rest of the strays that had no where to go."
Melone - 29/30
My sweet scientist.. He lived alone for the majority of his teen years, his family was kind. But they died before he ever reached 16.. And little Melone almost gave up his dream of being like his mother, but he didn't. He followed what she did, became a scientist, a biologist specifically because it's all he's known. He grew up young knowing more than a child ever learns, top of all his classes without even studying because he genuinely is a genius.
So he gets his PHD in Biology and Biochemistry by the age of 26, taking dual subjects because "Just taking one was too easy" before starting his training to become a Clinical Embryologist, to work with IVF. His mother couldn't have children naturally, ending up resorting to IVF to have Melone in the first place so he always grew up as wanting to help other people attain what his mother was so thankful for... But it's not just that, he wanted to have godhood in his hands, to create and be revered. It was a fleeting feeling, but it never truly left either.
But he never got to finish it. Not out of lashing out, or getting hunted by the mafia. It was just wrong place at the wrong time and he saw the lighter reignited. Why he got placed into the hitman team even he doesn't know, he's not overly cruel but he learns to be. He stops trying to make life and learns to take it instead, he has no choice and he knows that.
Formaggio - 31/32
Maggio is actually the only one that stumps me a little, I feel he was never cruel or sought out hurting things like serial killers do, but I don't think he ever shied away from that he wasn't entirely a good person..
Whether it was learned or not, I'm leaning more that it was learnt.. Maybe one of his parents or a close friend was the type to deliberately hurt things and he just kinda.. never stopped it because he doesn't have that strong moral compass or understanding that it was wrong because he trusted the person. But that trust let people walk all over him, his friends, family, people in school.. everyone. It made him feel small, like nothing.. So he uses his strength to prove them wrong even if he knows that he shouldn't, but he does it anyways.
Eventually he gets into trouble with the police for starting fights, not even for anything, he just... enjoyed it. So he gets arrested over and over until he seeks the mafia out himself.
He'd heard rumours and wanted to know if they're true, unfortunately he wasn't quick enough to realize that it wasn't something he can get out of once he's in.
Sorbet - 35/36
Oh Sorbet and Gelato my sweethearts...
Sorbet's childhood was... rough to say the least, even if he doesn't believe it was or that people "had worse" so he can't complain. It was still bad, and other people having it worse did not make his suddenly better. He joined the military as fast as he could just to get away and he's both thankful and hates that he did.
He became a medic pretty easily, he wanted to help as much as he could, did his training, met Gelato... Hated Gelato... But then they served together and Sorbet saw more pain and hell than he ever thought possible, it fucked him up in ways he didn't even understand. And he sees that pain every single time he closes his eyes for years, even after he leaves the military... And they leave together, they don't entirely search out the mafia but they get nothing for their service either.
They're broke, they have nothing. So they resort to crime, anything and everything to make do, until they're eventually found by Risotto because they've been taking out their hits unintentionally.
(Also 100% calls Gelato a DILF to get on his nerves)
Gelato - 39/40
Gel... He didn't have a bad childhood, it wasn't amazing but he was never hurt, but he joins the military out of expectation, his family wanted him to and he felt like he owed them for caring for him... So he joins and quickly becomes someone people don't like, he's rude and snappy without meaning to be, he thinks so highly of himself... He's just kind of an asshole.
Til he gets shot and Sorbet has to patch him up, they both don't like each other, they clash a lot... But it's the moment that Gelato stops being so uptight and finally lets those walls down even a little to be palatable.
They always have each others backs in the line of fire that eventually they get close enough to be... friends? They'd never admit they care for each other but they do, until they leave they still act like they hate each other... Until one day they stop pretending.
