Photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson Captures the Joy of Young Afghan Skateboarders
In Afghanistan, girls aren’t allowed to bicycle but they are allowed to skateboard. So, in 2007 a non-profit that pairs skating and education called ‘Skateistan’ descended on the country. Skateboarding is now the #1 sport for women in Afghanistan. Photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson took these award-winning portraits of skateboarding girls in Kabul.

Photos from My Father, the Stranger, by Diana Markosian/Getty Images Reportage. The story explores Markosian’s experience reconnecting with her father after having not seen him for almost two decades.
Diana Markosian was awarded the first ever Chris Hondros Fund Emerging Talent Award, a $5000 prize in support of her photographic work. On receiving the award, Markosian told Time that Hondros ‘[had] a real impact on me. I was a wannabe photographer. I had this dream to see the world, and I had no desire to do things the conventional way – graduate, stay in New York, work my way up the corporate ladder. Chris encouraged me to find my own way.‘
The Chris Hondros Fund was created to honor Getty Images photojournalist and two-time Pulitzer finalist Chris Hondros, who was killed April 20, 2011, in a mortar attack in Misrata, Libya. CHF advances the work of photojournalists who espouse his legacy and vision, and sponsors fellowships and programs that bring shared human experiences into the public eye. This year’s main prize was awarded to Getty Images photographer Kevin Frayer.
