I believe my point was that famous people are still people, and often not very nice ones. Bill Cosby comes to mind. That he’s a monster doesn’t change the fact that he was beloved by generations before we discovered that no one was safe with him.

I don’t think having bought a single copy of Good Omens five years ago qualifies as lining someone’s pockets. I don’t think throwing said book away will make me morally righteous now. Unlike, apparently, you.

You're right, of course. Thinking like that isn't good for anyone's mental health. But it's also not good for anyone's mental health to fall in love with a piece of fiction so completely that you can't remove it from yourself even upon finding out that the person who created it has caused irreparable harm. Especially if that person is still alive and profiting off their works.

I get it. I deeply love a lot of fiction too. Things that have changed my life. But the past is the past and being able to move on to things that are not so obviously tainted is important too. Yeah, the story had a co-author, but that co-author has plenty of other work that could be getting more attention instead, too.

Paul Gauguin was a pedo creep who walked out on his wife and two children to move to Tahiti and have sex with barely adolescent girls. But his art is breathtaking. Does it compromise my morals that I still love his work?

Charles Dickens alternately ignored and abused his wife throughout their marriage and encouraged his colleagues (Wilkie Collins come to mind) to treat her with contempt while he openly flaunted his mistress. But his writing was one of my inspirations to become a writer myself. Does it compromise my morals that I still love his work?

Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning? Hypocrites who viciously turned in loyal servants who had the gall to fall in love when they should have been washing socks. Charlie Chaplin’s wives got younger and younger until it was pathetic as well as obscene. Gene Roddenberry was in love with both Majel Barrett and Nichele Nichols. He chose Majel Barrett because being married to Nichele Nichols would have negatively impacted his career.

Yet knowing all that, we still read their poetry, enjoy their movies, and are fans of their television shows.

If you have to put a moral seal of approval on a creator, knowing everything about them before you’ll consider the merit of the work, you’ll have the moral high ground, but you’ll miss out on some wonderful things.

i don’t understand how neil gaiman intellectual properties still trend on here so regularly he literally trafficked women. like it’s not even a discourse thing or a “he’s problematic” thing he was “cancelled” for human trafficking. he repeatedly isolated women, usually his or his ex-wife’s fans, with no support system for the purpose of raping them while they were dependent on him for income and housing. that’s human trafficking

Perhaps if we’d known before we fell in love with his creations, so completely and utterly in love that they took on a life of their own, there wouldn’t be a question of leaving his work by the wayside.

But we didn’t know. We didn’t know for literally years, and some matters of the heart are irrevocable.

And we can’t go into every piece of work for the first time thinking: I’d better not fall in love with this in case the creator is a monster (Which, in this case, he obviously is. He should still get his day in court, yes, but even nazi war criminals got that).

Also, in the case of Good Omens, which is what I believe the OP is referencing, it was also the creation of Terry Pratchett, who made the request before he died that it be brought to screen.

Did Terry know what Gaiman was up to all that time? Likely not, but we’ll never know for sure. Does that mean we should ignore his work ‘just in case’?

You can call the profits from this work blood money, but the art, and the literally billions of words of fan fiction produced because of it, overwhelm the size of the original work.

The monetary profits will rapidly disappear into legal costs and making up for income lost to a ruined career.

What is produced in pure love shouldn’t be.

So, I have this candy dish. I’ve had it for years, it’s the kind you buy with candy of questionable integrity already inside and are probably wisest to toss out rather than eat.

It had been a while since it was used, and I thought I should at least swab the dust off it with a damp cloth before we filled it (with Ghirardelli’s and Dove chocolates, nothing remotely traditional) and put it out.

I turned it over and discovered it has a battery door in the base. I never even noticed.

Upon closer inspection, we discovered it also has an on/off switch. This was vital once we put batteries in it.

Keep in mind, this thing has no moving parts, and we had no idea what it would do. It could have been a portable Tardis.

Please turn up the volume for you dining and dancing pleasure.

I often see posts about curating your own online experience that make the point, “content creators aren’t your parents.” And, yes, that is absolutely true! And I try not to be like “as a parent,“ but as a parent…

EVEN PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO ENCOURAGE RESPONSIBLE READING/VIEWING BEHAVIOR. NOT filter everything ahead of time for their kid.

When my kiddo was 5, his pediatrician was asking him the usual Well Child Visit questions (“What are your favorite foods? What do you do to get your body moving? Do you know what to do if you get lost in a public place?” Etc.) and she asked, “What do you do if you see something on TV that scares or upsets you?”

I piped up like, “Oh, he doesn’t watch TV without one of us in the room,” which was true at the time and is still largely true now. She said, “Yes, but that won’t always be the case, so make sure you’re talking to him about what to do if he sees something that upsets him.”

So we started talking to him about that, and the answer is simple: “Turn it off or leave the room, and talk to someone you trust about what you saw and what you’re feeling.”

The answer is NOT “Ask your parents to make sure you never see anything upsetting again,” because that’s just not possible — and ultimately that would be doing the kid a disservice, since sooner or later he’s going to be out in the world where we can’t control what he watches or reads. That doesn’t mean we don’t try to make sure he’s watching/reading age-appropriate stuff, it just means that’s not the only safeguard he has — and that’s a good thing.

So yes, content creators aren’t your parents and aren’t responsible for making sure you never see anything you don’t like — but also, your own parents should have taught you what to do when that happens. So if they didn’t, take it from me, your internet mom:

Turn it off.

Walk away.

Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.

And leave the person who created the thing that upset you alone.
