She had a whole list of reasons prepared, although it wasn’t clear if she could actually get through the list. And that, if nothing else, indicated that Jackie really shouldn’t be working right now. The emotions bubbled too close to the surface and she couldn’t force them down, no matter how hard she tried. But Dom offered a lifeline, and Jackie was more than grateful. She couldn’t bring herself to move away yet, but nodded, letting her tight grip on him ease up ever so slightly. “I could - I could do that. If you need help.”

Dom was relieved that she had accepted his offer. Now that he thought on it it likely was a good idea anyway to see if a fresh set of eyes might be able to pick up something that he hadn’t been able to. Plus, he was truly amazing in the lab and it brought him a lot of pride to see her at work. “I would really appreciate it, actually” he admitted, “You’ve got a talent for it”

“Pomona?” Edward asked, his brows narrowing in confusion for a moment before lifting in delighted surprise. “The Herbology professor?” The smallest of smiles tugging at the corner of Dom’s lips had a wide grin settling over Edward Bones’ features. “You’re going on a date?” The words were careful, cautious in a way that his smile wasn’t but Edward couldn’t help that much. It had been so long since his partner had shown romantic interest in anyone and Edward was happy to see him maybe moving on after so long.

“A couple of my old trainees, my nephews and nearly everyone in a yellow tie saw us talking in the Great Hall and mobbed around us suggesting that we do. Even I can’t ignore their good intentions.” Dom replied, sighing before going on, “I’ve gotten to know her a little and perhaps it is time. We don’t know that anything will actually work out though so don’t get excited just yet”

Pomona found herself oddly … flustered as Dom handed over the soil and began rolling his sleeves up. She really hadn’t expected him to be serious about the offer to help - she’d heard it enough times to realize it was usually just the polite thing to say. It didn’t bother her either, because she was more than capable. However it would be foolish to turn down help, and she didn’t want him to leave. “If you could just add it to the top,” she said, gesturing at the pot. “I was transplanting some into a new pot and it needs more soil on top. Don’t pack it down, just spread it down gently - like so.” Taking a handful of soil, she sprinkled it over the top of what was already in the pot. “Fill it to here,” she gestured to the appropriate spot, “and then it should be perfect.”

As she instructed him his eyes followed her hands. Working at Hogwarts implied a desire to nourish young minds and a talent worth recognizing within their respective subject. Dom could not yet speak to her talent but what had happened in the Great Hall was more than enough to show the love that her students had for her. His nephews and auror trainees had no clue about his reasons for having remained alone all these years but they had always let it be. Their urging had made him wonder if perhaps maybe time had come for him to at least try. They’d seen something in her that made them believe that they might at least be able to make it through one date together and he would be lying if he said he wasn’t at least a little bit curious what it was. “This is perhaps an abrupt question” he began, reaching for a handful of the soil and beginning to spread it as she had, “but what drew you to teaching?”.

WHO: Maia Reyes and Anyone WHERE: A Regular Corridor WHEN: March 4th, 4pm

Things seemed quiet at the moment, and Maia wanted to take advantage of it as much as she could. Things had been so hectic at Hogwarts, between the attacks, the Wizarding World itselfs, and her own issues with the letter arriving on her birthday (a new familiarity with Professor Sprout arising from the occurence), and she figured she could find a place of solace somewhere when she didn’t have anything else to go. 

In one of the many nooks in a hallway that she regularly claimed as her own, Maia had a book propped up on her lap, eyes scanning over the pages. She was never as exceptional as her housemates when it came to academics, but she always loved stories. Art supplies laid next to her, hands covered in the regular splotches of ink and paint. She picked up on someone nearby, and without thinking, glanced their way. “Oh, um, hi.” 

The restlessness had returned. Edward would be leaving the school in a few days time and though they had taken a baby step forward in things with Charlotte they hadn’t actually found anything of true use. Today he had been assigned to late afternoon rounds and he was glad for the excuse to stretch his legs. For the most part the castle was devoid of younger students who were in their late classes. Every so often he ran into an older student who was taking that time slot for independent study but overall things were just as he had expected them to be. 

He was turning the corner towards his makeshift office when he caught a glimpse of pink hair. Last he had seen the girl he was giving her a glass of hot chocolate to calm her tears. At least now she seemed to be doing a lot better. Hoping that this was true he returned her greeting, “Hey there”

Jackie had always tried her best to separate her work from her emotions; even after she left John, she had tried not to it show at work. Well, aside from how hard she threw herself into her work, but that didn’t count. So now, even thought it was her sister who was missing, she had tried as hard as she could to prove that she was a level-headed as ever, able to continue her work without any problems. It was hard to do that when Dom was hugging her, however. “But I’m fine,” she mumbled, still trying to cling to her self-control. “It’s - it’s fine, I don’t need - I have to work, I have to find Glenda.”

“How about, for today, you help me in the lab?” Dom offered, understanding all too well the place that she was coming from, “I’ve been working to crack the curse that was placed on those blades. I could really use a fresh pair of eyes”. If he truly had his way she wouldn’t be working at all, but that wasn’t his call. This at least was something that he could justify her doing were Edward or Alastor to ask.

“I know,” She said quickly, getting embarrassed at just how quickly she had replied. Alice sat down, unsure of exactly why Professor Dippet had recommended her when she had never shown interest in being an auror. If anything, being an auror suited Frank much more than her. “I just mean that Professor Dippet told me who you were, and Ted. I’m good friends with him.” She figured that bringing up the boy couldn’t hurt, especially if it made him realize that her being an auror must be some sort of joke. “I’m just uh- not exactly sure why I’m here?” The words came out unsure, as she was sure he would just say that she was wasting his time and kick her out. If she had to be honest though, the prospect of being an auror certainly seemed interesting enough. The girl just didn’t think she had it in her though. 

It wasn’t uncommon for students to be unsure of what it was that they wanted to do when they finished their schooling which was why Dom took recommendations in the first place. “I wanted to discuss with you the possibility of joining the Auror department after you’ve graduated from Hogwarts. You’ve got great marks and I really think you could be an asset if you wanted to be. Not that I am trying to push you one way or the other. I’m happy to discuss options with you as well” he told her before leaning forward ever so slightly towards her, “My nephews have also mentioned you quite a bit”

Alex felt like she owed a lot to Dom, seeing as he was the one who had taught her basically everything she knows about being an auror. She also had a lot of respect for the man, and cared about him a lot. Which was exactly why she couldn’t just let his birthday pass by without getting him anything. “Happy birthday!” The girl sang out while opening his door, already holding out the present. She knew that there was no use in pretending like she was there for any other reason. 

Over the years a lot of students had come to him for training. Each of them were memorable in their one way or another. Most weren’t able to make it through and he defaulted them to the Magical Law Enforcement Squad or some other area that would suit them far better. For those who did make it though he felt an almost fatherly sort of pride. Alex Fawley was one of his more recent graduates and she and Kingsley Shacklebolt were working amazingly together. “Thank you Alex” he said, gesturing towards the chair across from him, “How are you doing?”

Ted pushed open the door to Dom’s office at his invitation, a grin tugging at his lips and a gift hidden behind his back. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything important” He said, still standing in the doorway. “I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and leave you this.” He revealed the wrapped gift, holding it up so the man he called his uncle could see it. While he hadn’t always brought Dom gifts for holidays or birthdays, Ted found in recent years that it only felt right to do so. His uncle was an important figure in his life, one who had been nothing but a mentor and someone he could turn to for anything. Besides, Ted enjoyed gifting him items from the muggle world, their shared heritage something they could celebrate together even if others looked down on it.

Dom waved to the chair in indication that he had nothing really going on. He had switched to the night rounds the day before and had asked for a set of fresh eyes to review the materials in the makeshift lab which left him pretty much free for the entirety of the afternoon, “If you’ve got time you can stay a minute” he offered, “I’ve got something to drink around here somewhere. Hot chocolate I think....”

Edward Bones had made rounds that morning, checking in on the Aurors under his command and tying up loose ends before his upcoming departure. John Dawlish would be lying if he said he wasn’t sad to see the man go, as he’d enjoyed working with the skilled Auror for the past few months. Still, Bones had seemed to be in a better mood than he had been in a while, and John could understand the desire to go home after being away for so long. Somehow, however, John figured the visit was less to go over last minute details and more to remind everyone that it was Dom’s birthday and they’d better go wish their mentor a happy one if they hadn’t already.

John pushed open the door to Dom’s office, a small smile tugging at his lips. “So I hear today is something of a special one?” He said, making his way further into the office.

Dom’s head shot up as John entered his office. It was nice to see his old trainee smiling again, especially after the tense couple of minutes they had had during their last meeting. Since last they had spoke Dom had been hard at work in the lab to try and get John out of trouble at least in that regard. Finally, he had managed to find a bit of information on the curse that had been placed on the blades enough to run them for print history. John was not a match. ‘Ah, so I see that Edward really did make his rounds” he said with a shake of his head, “Thank you, John”

Something told Jasper that Dom didn’t take him seriously. Maybe it was the furtive glances he would catch or the way the other Aurors glared at him whenever he attempted to lighten the situation. With students dying and the war worsening – things were bad enough as is, and Jasper felt it was important to keep things breezy. It seemed like he was being kept away from all the action – granted, it was his last year of training, but he was here, back at Hogwarts. Prepared to fully suck up to Dom, he waited to hear from him before walking into the room. “Dominique! Happy birthday, mate – what are you, now, 21?”

Becoming an auror wasn’t easy. First, one had to have all of the proper NEWTs to even be considered for the program and then they had to make their way through a rigorous three year training program. Dom had learned to take chances every so often and Hornby had been one of those chances. Initially he hadn’t thought that he would actually make it through training. He certainly didn’t lack talent, but his disposition was a bit too sunny in his opinion to face some of the situations that people in this field found themselves in. Then again, it may just prove to be a surprise asset. Only time would tell. “What do you want, Hornby?” he asked his trainee, shaking his head at the misuse of his name.

The last of John’s anger seemed to leave him as Dom’s hand came to rest on his shoulder, leaving him feeling rather deflated, tired, and disappointed. “No, I suppose you didn’t.” John muttered, though the fact he hadn’t been trained to expect betrayal from his own coworkers did little to lessen the guilt settling in the pit of his stomach. “So why does it feel like I’ve failed?” He asked, the mention of failure tasting bitter on his tongue. All throughout training, John had been a bit of a hot shot, learning quickly and mastering skills easily. He’d worked hard, no doubt, but it was rare that he’d experienced significant failure and he didn’t much like the feeling now.

He wished that he knew a better way to help him other than obtaining lab clearance. Dom was good at his job but with each new student he found a way that he wished he could have been better. The trainer took notice too of the skills that others had that he simply didn’t. Edward would have had the words to make things seem better but Dom didn’t so he said nothing more than the words that every single person who had gone through Auror training was trained to say, “We’re doing the best that we can”

Context. A simple enough request, but Ted wasn’t quite sure where to begin. His relationship with Andromeda Black stemmed back from the day they met, and had been a slow transition from strangers, to friends, to something more that each of them had been reluctant to put into words. How could he explain the complexities of what his heart had only recently admitted without sounding completely foolish for the situation he had gotten himself into? “It’s a really long story.” He said miserably, eyeing the box of tissues warily. It was also an emotional one, but Ted didn’t have time to get into that now. Time was of the essence and he would have to stick only to the relevant facts.

“You’re going to think I’ve been stupid, and maybe I have been, but- I’ve sort of been secretly dating Andromeda Black for um- awhile now and things are really, really complicated.” Ted wondered for a moment if Edward Bones had mentioned the duel Ted had been involved in earlier this year to Dom, but figured that wasn’t really an important detail. “First of all, she’s engaged to someone else. A complete ass if there ever was one, by the way, and she deserves so much better. And second of all, her family is extremely prejudiced against muggleborns, which, I suppose my family is prejudiced against witches and wizards too, but my family isn’t threatening murder.” He was rambling now, but he couldn’t help it. Now that the floodgates had been opened, so to speak, Ted found that everything he’d bottled up for months now suddenly had an outlet. “Her sister caught us together on Christmas and she was- Bellatrix- it wasn’t pretty. Thankfully she didn’t murder me on the spot but forced us to end things. She said if I ever went near her sister again, she’d go after mine. And, well, I sort of started seeing Andromeda again.”

Upon hearing the very first sentence out of Ted’s mouth Dom leaned forward ever so slightly. Andromeda Black. Of all the girls he could have possibly chosen he had gone for one that was from an extremely prejudiced family. He wanted to agree that that was rather stupid of him but Dom remembered what it was to be young and in love and he knew just how little control he had over the situation. His only hope was that Andromeda herself didn’t share the views of her family. That opened an entire avenue of questions about the girl in question that would have to be answered later. Dom understood very well why Ted had come to him. He came from a muggle family and wanted to make sure that the eldest Black sister wouldn’t be able to deliver on her threats should he be discovered with Andromeda and Dom was one of the very few in his life who could offer help that would be relatively undetectable to muggles. 

Once Ted had finished speaking Dom leaned back in his desk and began thinking over what he could do to help him. He had never called in a favor before but there were a few people out there who owed him in one way or another. “I’ll take care of it” he assured him, “I’ve just got one question, why didn’t you come to me sooner? My door is always open. You can talk to me about anything”

Who: Andie & Dom ( @dom-marchand ) Where: Greenhouse number 6 and the castle When: March 16, 11:30 pm

Professor Sprout kept waving off Andie’s apologies, but she couldn’t stop offering them. She wasn’t even allowed to help clean up the mess she’d made - and considering she’d completely overturned a table before she woke up, it was a big mess. Professor Sprout had said gently that maybe it was better if Andie didn’t attempt any magic at the moment, however, and Andie couldn’t argue with that. She was as likely to explode the shards of pottery as clean it up. The only saving grace was that no one else had seen it yet, and even that didn’t last long as one of the Aurors stepped in. She recognized him, although she couldn’t remember his name; he was close to Ted, she thought. He and Professor Sprout held a quick, whispered conversation before the professor turned back, with the explanation that Mr. Marchand would walk Andie back to the castle.

It didn’t help Andie feel any better about the evening but she nodded and followed him outside, tugging her cloak around her shoulders. The dark didn’t help either - it made the remnants of her nightmare press around closer and she didn’t realize her steps had slowed until she was stopped, arms folded tightly over her chest as she tried to keep her breathing steady. “I’m - I’m sorry, I need to catch my breath.”

Days ago Dom spoke with Edward about taking night rounds. Once he had explained that it was in part because he had the hopes of escorting Pomona back to the castle Edward had allowed it. Dom was nearly positive that the allowance was more from his position as his elder brother than it was as his boss but he was glad for the opportunity to get to know the first woman that had caught his attention in years a little bit better. This night was supposed to be like every other had been so far, they’d walk and talk a little and he’d leave her at the castle before going on to finish his rounds, but he knew upon entering the greenhouse that it would be different. Unpotted plants were strewn about the floor, soil in a large heap near an overturned table and a young girl he had only seen from a distance were the sight that met him. After a quick whispered conversation and a promise that he would return to help with clean up he found himself walking quietly beside the middle Black sister. 

Near about a month ago Ted had come to him and told him everything that was going on. He hadn’t said a word to anyone, not even the team of hit wizards that he had hired to guard the Tonk’s family and report back to him personally, but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t at least the slightest bit curious. Dom was a muggleborn himself so he made sure to be familiar with the families that might think lesser of him, especially with the dividing of families during the war. Clearly, Andromeda didn’t agree with her family if she and Ted were fighting this hard just to be with one another. It was evident too that something was troubling her if she was having nightmares violent enough to result in the overturning of tables. “I’m in no rush, Miss Black” he assured her, softening his voice in spite of knowing no one was around to hear them “I’m Dom, by the way. Ted’s uncle”

Pomona stood uncertainly, setting aside her wand when it became apparent that nothing was wrong outside. That was a relief. They’d been through enough lately, and she just wanted to make it through the rest of the school year without any problems. “I’m glad to hear that,” she said, relaxing as she turned back to her plant. A soft laugh escaped at the joke, and she shot a look at him from the corner of her eye. She hadn’t expected him to make a joke, but it was amusing. “Maybe it was. And - well, I never turn help down. I’m almost done though, so it shouldn’t take too much of your time. Can you hand me that bag of soil?”

It was probably a good thing that he had worked so long on schooling his features otherwise she would have been treated to a pretty rapid array of them: surprise at the fact that she had found him at least a little funny, happiness in response and the smallest touch of embarrassment as he noticed how that little laugh lit up her eyes. “No problem” he replied as he reached for the bag of soil she had indicated. After passing it to her he rolled the sleeves of the tan trench he wore as part of his uniform so that he would be ready to get his hands dirty, “Alright, how can I help then?”

Ted sank into the chair offered to him by his Uncle Dom, who wasn’t really his uncle at all. Ever since Edward and Adeline Bones practically adopted Ted as another son, the rest of their family had followed suit and that included Domhnall Marchand. At first, Ted had found it odd that he should call this complete stranger ‘uncle’ but as the years passed, he found that Dom was a better uncle to him than is actual blood-uncle. As a fellow muggle-born, Dom understood the juxtaposition of the two halves of Ted’s life, and had severed as a mentor to him when he found balance difficult. He was there for Ted, patiently answering questions about the wizard world and listening when Ted needed a chance to unload the burdens of his muggle life. Though Ted could very well reach out to Mr. and Mrs. Bones for anything, it was Dom that he turned to most often, finding that Dom was one of the few people in this world who could truly understand him.

“Yes.” Ted answered bluntly, figuring there was no time to dance around the point. “My sisters are in trouble and it’s all my fault.” The words rushed out, his words colored with anxiety. “And then I tried to make it right, I wrote to my father telling him what he should do to protect them but he didn’t listen. He never listens. And if anything happens to them-“ Ted’s voice cracked with emotion and he swallowed thickly, shaking his head. “I don’t know what to do, Uncle Dom.”

Years ago when Dom had found out he would never have children of his own he had determined that he would have to be the best uncle that he could be. Edward had taken on the same generous nature that his parents had had when they took in Dom and he took in every wayward child he encountered, offering to be father that was otherwise absentee in their lives and offering Dom more than enough opportunity to fill the next best role to parenthood. When Ted had come along Dom was presented with someone who had been just as confused about this new world as he had been when he had first been introduced to it. He could remember how kind Edward had been in answering all of his questions, even if at the time he just thought he was the annoying Gryffindor boy asking an older smarty pants Ravenclaw for advice, and he wanted to pay it forward. Over the years it became more and more natural to fill the role of family and mentor to him.

Seeing him distressed was of great and immediate concern because it wasn't often that it happened. "You know that I'll help you in any way that I can, but I'm going to need some context before I can do that" he told him calmly, reaching into his desk to pull out some tissues he had put away just in case they were going to be needed. With a wave of his wand he sealed the door and added a silencing charm so that they had a very minimal chance of being overheard.

Pomona had never been given to much worry or anxiety, which she had always been grateful for. She tried to focus on problems only as they became serious and not borrow trouble. That had become much more difficult as time moved on, and things became much worse, and so quickly. Just since the school year had started, she had developed sleeping problems and found herself keeping later hours in the greenhouses - although that was now at least partially due to Andromeda and Ted. Tonight, however, they had not been able to meet up and Pomona’s late hours were only due to her own worries. Rather than toss and turn in bed, she’d just stayed in the greenhouses, tending her plants and trying not to think of all that could go wrong.

Hearing the door open, she snatched up her wand and held it defensively, only to relax when she recognized Dom. “Everything’s fine,” she said, attempting for a casual time. It was difficult for multiple reasons, including her attraction to him and her general worries about everything. “I just needed a little extra work with the flutterby bush tonight. Is everything alright outside?” Despite herself and her desire to keep him from knowing how worried she was, her brow furrowed she she stepped closer, reaching for her wand. “Nothing’s wrong at the castle, is it?”

Out of habit Dom allowed his eyes to trail the room. It was almost as he remembered it, lush and green and beautiful, but there was something very different about it - something he figured was probably uniquely her. Just like the first time they had met her hair was braided and there was dirt beneath her nails which to him was just a sure sign that she really loved what she did, perhaps her being here was testimony to that. “To the best of my knowledge there is no need for alarm” Dom replied, noting the furrow of her brow, “I’m sorry if I alarmed you. Perhaps it was the flutterby bush that attracted me”. The joke was a little flat, but he had never really been very funny. After all, the plant was known for attracting those who lacked caution and that was more than a little ironic. “Would you like help?” he asked again.

“Don’t mind if I do.” Edward said with a smile, as he pushed his way into his partner’s office and dropped into the seat across from him. He avoided wishing Dom a happy birthday right away, knowing that Dom struggled to enjoy a day dedicated to celebrating himself. Normally, Edward liked to go all out on birthdays throwing some pretty spectacular parties over the years, and he liked to think he had a knack for gift-giving, but he had always respected Dom’s preference for a more quiet celebration. “I actually came to apologize, Dom.” Edward said gravely, clasping his hands in his lap. “I’m sorry I won’t be able to cook you your favorite tonight considering we’re stuck here for the foreseeable future.”

It was far from a normal response, but at the seriousness in Edward’s tone Dom immediately felt suspicious. He’d like to think that after spending nearly a decade living under the same roof and then another working together that he would know when something was really, really wrong. With a slight shake of his head he nodded just as gravely, “Perhaps I really will have to ask Pomona if she’d like to go to dinner then. Or I could settle for toast....”. It was both an upside and a downside to working in the lab that there wasn’t much to do while one waited for potions to brew and his rounds weren’t until much later in the evening. Maybe, if he could get away with it, taking her for that date finally would be a good way to pass the time.
