LIVE REVIEW: AU/RA @ The Waiting Room, 13/11/17

When I decided to check AU/RA out, I bought it as a bargain and didn’t think much about it. But I’m happy to say, I was blown away. I get there sometime before 10, and the place is packed. Selling out your ‘first ever proper show’, is quite an achievement, and sure enough, the Ibiza-born vocalist has set out to achieve great things in the next few years. Accompanied by a one man band, they open with the singer’s most well-known song ‘Concrete Jungle’. Having grown up listening to a variety of genres, AU/RA has a sensational sense of vocal melodies, her style is fresh and interesting but not obscure. Musically, she is Lorde’s rebellious little sister. Her instrumentalist, Collum, is playing guitar and keys, singing backing vocals, and also providing percussional elements with a drum pad. Although the whole gig doen’t last more than 40 minutes, it’s an incredibly energetic performance, full of emotinal and pulsing electro-pop peaks, quiet verses and funny comments between songs (’Some people read more into it, but this song is only about junk food’). AU/RA has great potential, and I shall catch her again whenever the two LA locals decide to fly over to Europe.
