“Because if you haven’t realized, little lioness, I am powerful as well.”
“I’ve noticed before, oddly enough. The sexual seduction you employ is almost as powerful as your arrogance.”
“Come on, don’t any of you know how to block a kick? How the fuck are you all going into the Auror program without knowing how to fight?”
“I’d highly avoid tellin’ Bellatrix that she is an idiot. Idiot, no. Insane, almost certifiably.”
“Insane and idiotic. I hate her guts but she’s powerful and yet, she’s still marrying you.”
“You don’t know that,” he stated, his voice soft. James always firmly believed he had pretty fantastic advice. This wasn’t always true, but he didn’t know it until too late. Tilting his head to the side, he wondered what could possibly be so bad that she was talking like this. “Okay, woah there, darling. Never meant to. Something’s bothering you, but I won’t push you. You’re clearly upset.”
Riley scowled darkly and shoved at his shoulder, uncaring for tempering her hit. She was just so - so fucking sick of waiting to be on her own. And she hated that her first instinct was always to push her friends away. She deflated slightly, dropping her head, but her pride kept her from saying much. “Clearly, huh?”
{{✹}};; “Oi, look. I’m a cosmopolatist. Or whatever the fuck you call them muggle folk that do hair and makeup ‘n shit. Shit’s easy.”
“Do mine. It’s driving me mad.”
James stared at her, blinking, feeling slightly awkward. Biting his lip, he took a deep breath. “My parents wanted to spend travel around for the summer, but they’re going to spend some time with some of my in-laws and I’m not big fans of them, so they’re going to come get me when they’re done.” Pursing his lips, he took a deep breath and looked over at her. “Hey, take a deep breath. It’ll all be okay. If you need to talk, I’m a good listener, promise.”
“I’ve got nothing to say that you’ll want to listen to, Potter,” Riley said. He wouldn’t want to hear that the fact he was so bloody priviledged made her skin crawl with hate and envy, because she’d love to be so careless and get to stay, get to exist outside of the structure of school but in a place she loved. No, he got that simply because he was Potter, and she tried not to hate him for it. “Don’t you pity me. I’m fine.”
“Hey, it just takes a certain person to maintain my affections. She just hasn’t done that and I don’t know if she will.”
“You don’t strike me as a person who can be maintained. But then again, what do I know, I don’t intend to ever be married. Your girl might just be an idiot.”
“Well thanks,” Lucinda rolled her eyes. “You should have warned me before I got to the point of failing. I’d imagine that was years ago though.”
“I would have warned you but I don’t really care too much for dull things.”
Riley appeared with flowers in her hair, a bag slung across her back, and a look that screamed mischief and danger. Every year since she was fifteen, she’d come to the festival in Hogsmeade. A room was kept for her in a lodging down the street, with a nice older woman who didn’t question so long as Riley kept herself to herself. And friends came too, now. Even though Benjy -- his name brought a brief expression of pain -- had abandoned her this summer, she refused to let his betrayal ruin her own fun.
The girl tossed her head as she stalked down the street to drop off her things. She returned ten minutes later with a flowing, cut up shirt, too tight pants and no shoes on. The flowers in her hair glittered with magic and she felt herself smile despite the temperment she cultivated. As people started to gather she grabbed a pint of mead and started sipping, only to knock into someone her age.
“Oi, you’re wasting good drink here being clumsy.”
The way Riley’s arm touched the bare skin below the sleeve of her t-shirt made Faye’s skin tingle. She didn’t want to overthink her feelings, but she was sure that being this close to Riley had never made her stomach feel like this before. Faye studied Riley’s face as the other girl studied the stars. She had looked at the girl hundreds of times over the years, but not like this. She had never tried to take everything in before, to pay attention to every detail. Their faces were only inches apart when Riley turned her head, causing Faye to suck in a breath. “What did I do?” she asked quietly. “I’m the only person I know how to be.”
Aye, she was. And so was Riley, down to the very core of herself. Neither girl could pretend to save their lives; it ws one of the reasons they’d become thick as thieves, age gap be damned. Something kindred despite their numerous differences, something that forged them together. Riley dropped her eyes from Faye’s face as her own heated up some, for no reason she could discern. “You’re distracting, and I know you’re doing it on purpose.”
Riley was one of the few people that Faye truly loved. She’d kill for Riley, if it ever came to that. But lately things had been feeling different when they were together, a good different. The way they were holding hands now was evidence of that. Faye lay on the ground, still with her hand in Riley’s, and stared up at the sky. She looked over at her friend when the other girl paused, curious as to what the other suggestion would be. “I like silence,” she said and continued to look at Riley.
Trying to hold a girl’s hand and lay on the grass was a challenge she welcomed. Faye layed down gracefully and Riley just dropped, uncaring for grass stains or posturing. She lay pressed against Faye, comforted by the brush of warmth down her arm to their still connected hands. Her eyes fixed on the stars for a long while, until the stare burned her skin. Then she too turned to look, nose wrinkled. “God damn you, Faye,” she said crossly. How dare she be distracting, pretty? “You’re just -- ugh, why are you so you!”
“Precisely what I was aiming for,” Lucinda grinned. “You’re certain it’s not over the top though?”
“Everything about you already is. If you were looking to dull it down you fucking failed honey.”
“I can kill a man, dismember his body, and be home in time for dinner. But knowing what to say when my betrothed is feeling insecure … I’m totally lost. Is this my fault for continually putting off our wedding?”
“With the way you fuck around I’d be insecure if I was marrying you too. Who wants a whore for a husband?”
It was so … quiet, everywhere. Faye didn’t think she’d ever heard so much silence at Hogwarts before. It was nice, it felt like she and Riley were the only people in the school. She blushed, actually blushed, at Riley’s compliment. It wasn’t a common thing for her to do something like that. She tried not to think much of it, but she kept her hand tightly in Riley’s. “Thanks, Ri. Do you even know anythin’ about astronomy or are we just goin’ to stare up and pretend we know what we’re lookin’ at?”
Riley’s eyes blew wide to see that blush creep onto Faye’s cheeks. Her words weren’t honey, but she did speak like this often, saying exactly how she felt -- which oft times was barbed, prickly, and ready to fight. Faye brought out a gentler, less hostile side. “I passed my OWLs, so I think I can bullshit my way through a couple constellations. Or,” she paused, dragging herself closer to Faye, their linked hands a magnetic point. “We can just appreciate the silence.”
Molly raised an eyebrow as Riley took a turn of dramatics, slightly taken aback. Her eyes narrowed somewhat and she turned to look at her properly. There was something Molly was proud of, and that was not being gullible and being able to see through bullshit. Afterall, her brothers had taught her well in sensing bullshit. She had witnessed, herself experienced somewhat how her fellow students reacted to wanting and loving those they couldn’t have and even the most weepiest of woman never blurted out everything to the first person to show them attention. “If it wasn’t for the fact I know Benjy and I know you’re very quick on the tricking front, alas sadly not as great as the Marauders but give it time, I would give my sympathy to your cause but even a House Elf could see past this fabricated magical version of Romeo and Juliet.” she said, smirking just a little as she sat back. “It’s not nice to say these things, you have no idea what some students here are actually going through in regards to these situations. You’re lucky I’m one of the more rational students, but just be careful, your tricks could truly upset someone if they think you understand their plight. Just remember that.” she said,
“You know Benjy, huh,” Riley turned sharp, her edges from the mournful played girl to the unrelenting little shit she normally was. Her head cocked, alit with a look that screamed unimpressed with every facial tic. “Please, do tell me how you know Benjy. How we’ve been friends since I ran to Scotland and lived with him, how his parents have adopted me, how he’s got a strange pattern of freckles on his back that spell out ‘git’ if you squint your eyes -- but no, you know him so well.” Why she decided she needed to pick a fight, well, she wasn’t above doing it normally. And Molly was a very good target. “I don’t care about nice. If I did, I’d be a bloody ‘puff. If everyone’s actions got their earned consequences, a lot less purebloods would be strutting around this school now.”
“So,” Lucinda fluffed her hair out to show off the new cut and coloring. “It’s a lot better than being a brunette, don’t you think?”
“You make all blondes smarter in comparison.”
“Stargazing?” Faye said and raised her eyebrow slightly. She looked out the nearest window, “looks like a lovely evening. It could be fun, I s’pose.” She didn’t bother to remove her hand from Riley’s.
The way to the pitch proved surprisingly quiet, as it seemed the world had frozen in time now that the students were released from their responsibilities. Riley quickly broke them in, almost gleeful about it, and she quickly breathed a deep sigh of relief in the open green space. “You’re more lovely than the evening, you know that,” it wasn’t a question coming from her, but it was less of a statement than it should have been. A rare, unbridled smile tore from her as she looked at Faye.
