since you are, to my mind, the root and machine Understander, i wanted to ask your idea on something i've tried to figure out for a while: how/where/when do you think root got the idea (that she tells harold in the day the world went away) about the Machine keeping dead people 'alive' inside of her data/memories -- like is it likely something she came up all by herself or from the Machine or has she talked about it to the Machine and developed the theory with her? and do you think she (root) thinks of this as similar to or different from her simulation theories she tells shaw earlier in the episode?

second question first, I think of course she considers this similar!

as for the former... I actually kind of believe that for the machine this does not qualify as the people She remembers being alive. my main source for this is that She is so, so invested in specifically and almost exclusively keeping people alive, more or less to the exclusion of any other moral concerns.

(of course what She remembers in return 0 is also meaningful to Her, I think both can be true--'maybe we never really die' yet simultaneously the dead are dead. kinda the theme of the show in a way.)

that said She probably did let on that these simulations are one of the ways She sees the world, and Root (the most metaphysically inclined member of the cast, with the possible exception of TM Herself) drew her own conclusions from that

(also very plausible they did discuss it, but I also do think they have different perspectives on it. I think Root does see any continuation of her "pattern" as meaningfully a continuation of her existence; I think TM sees more distinction, as described above.)

I haven't rewatched OFMD for a while now because it gives me such massive feelings and even (especially) the good ones are just too much for me right now. Sometimes I even have to skip past gifs and art of them because it's too much but I love these two old men so much and I miss them! I need my life to settle down a bit so I have the mental space to get my emotional support gay pirates back. So glad to have so much fanfic and art to dive into in the meantime. What a fandom ❤️❤️❤️
