JELLYBEAN KNEW WHAT THAT was like. There were moments in her summer classes where she just couldn’t seem to stay focused. She wasn’t sure if it was the fact that the topics were boring or the fact that it was nice outside. Either way, focusing was a struggle most days. Which also meant that she would need to spend more time studying at home so that she could actually understand the topics at hand.
At her brother’s mention of Pop’s, the teen nodded her head with a large smile. It had been one of her favorite places to eat ever since she was a little girl. She could remember nights where they would all go over there and have dinner as a family, or they would just bring it home and eat at their kitchen table. She always ended up getting the same thing when she was there; a plain cheeseburger with cheese fries and a chocolate shake with two cherries on top. It had also been the very first place she wanted to go once she returned from Toledo for good.
“ Yeah, that would be great! My brain is completely drained from today and I don’t think that I can look at another textbook. I too, had a hard time focusing on anything today while in class. Not sure if it was because it’s so nice outside or the fact that the subject is dull. Anyway, are you ready to head over? ”
“Sounds like you need a burger as bad as I do,” he chuckled, mussing his sister’s hair. It was something he did a lot when she was little but he seemed to do it less these days. She was getting so big, too big for a brother. The thought nagged at him for a minute but he shook it off. JB would never be too old for him to torment, but that’s what big brothers do. God forbid anyone else try though. The Serpents had been getting Jug up to speed on fighting but he still wasn’t the best. Not that it would stop him. He’d fought for less and Jellybean was his to protect.
Jug took one last glance at the sky before setting off toward Pop’s. “How’s it feel being back?” he asked, needing something to talk about. It seemed ages since she and mom had left and although it hadn’t been a surprise to see JB home again, it was a major shock knowing that mom hadn’t come with her. A blow to all of them for sure, but he wondered how Jellybean was holding up. Had she fallen back in with her friends again? What about her school work? Was everything going smoothly? He wanted to know it all, but he also didn’t want to pry. He was sure she’d talk if she had something on her mind. It was the way things had always been between them and he hoped it was one thing that would never change.

Jughead chuckled and rolled his eyes. “Or it could be because I haven’t eaten anything in the past few hours. I’m wasting away,” he teased. “Perfectly clear huh? Way to knock a guy down.” His stomach growled, long and low. “The master has spoken. How about pancakes?” he asked, standing up with a slow stretch. “I think I have eggs but I won’t make any promises,” he said, shuffling to the kitchen to make them some food.
Mid-morning light forced its way past the curtains in the kitchen, sending slivers of warm light across the floor. Without even stepping foot outside he knew it was hot as hell out there, the sweltering heat only kept at bay by the window unit air conditioner in the living room, working it’s poor old self to death to keep them from frying alive. Unlike the bacon he found in the fridge, which he was more than happy to fry up, filling the little trailer with the smell of breakfast.

She wan’t really certain why he was doing ALL OF THIS for her. He wasn’t really her friend although perhaps the lack of closeness made her more comfortable to OPEN UP to him about leaving. Plus, it wasn’t like he was going to go around talking about it to anybody, ironic as it was. She sighed softly, looking into the drink that was slid back down the bar, a small shake of her head at his words. “At least you ADMIT to it,” she teased with a small chuckle, shaking her head. “Why ARE you here, Jughead?” she asked, lifting her gaze to his frame. This didn’t seem to be like it was his SCENE, anyway, licking away at the taste of alcohol from her lips. “I know you’re not the TYPE to be looking for answers at the bottom of the bottle,” she shrugged her shoulders, looking away from him. She almost knew he didn’t SEEK her out, at least.
“You’d be right about that,” he said. Jughead didn’t care if other people chose to drink. As long as it wasn’t hurting anyone, he could let it go. But for himself, there was a little fear that came with it. He’d seen the way his father had drank himself into a gutter and lost his family. FP had been doing much better lately and although he slipped on occasion, Jughead was proud of how far his father had come. Still, he worried that he might fall down the same slope FP had, especially now that he was so involved with the Serpents. “I don’t know. Running I guess. Shit’s really hit the fan lately. I needed to get out and walk, clear my head. This is just where I ended up,” he eyed her for a moment. “If you wanna talk about why you’re here, I promise not to write about it.”

She almost CHUCKLED at his words, a small shake of her head then. Perhaps he didn’t know her like she thought he did. She looked down at her hands at the mention of Archie, a shrug of her shoulders in response before she blew out a breath. “– I don’t know,” she admitted softly. The LONGER they went on, the more it felt like Archie was her high school boyfriend; that she loved him but he wasn’t a LOVE that would define her and make her stay in the small town when her heart was in New York City. “What about you?” she asked, lifting her gaze to meet his. “You going to stick with Riverdale forever?”
Her change in expression wasn’t lost on him but he tucked it away for later. “The plan wasn’t to stay,” he admitted, choosing his words carefully. “I thought I’d go to college, take some writing courses. Write a few novels. Maybe travel?” He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I know Betty won’t stay. She loves her mom but I think what she wants for herself... I don’t think that’s in Riverdale. But for me? The Serpents need me so... I guess what I planned will have to be put aside.” His tone came off slightly bitter but he had no right to feel the way he did about it. He had gotten himself into the mess he was in and there was a certain amount of pride that came with taking the mantle from his father. Still, a part of him wondered if it was worth it to be chained to Riverdale for the rest of his life. “You know Archie would follow you if you asked him to,” he said, diverting the subject a bit.

Jughead pursed his lips, unsure of what he should do. What he should say, if anything at all. He wasn’t an idiot, he knew what those kinds of scars were and what they were from. It suddenly made sense as to why she hid them so much but when she spoke it she said she didn’t want to talk about it. He rubbed his eyes with his forefinger and thumb, trying to decide what to say. One thing for sure had to become clear. “I don’t hate you. I’ve been there before just... not that far,” he admitted.
southsidelover:
“Something like that. Consider it my way of managing to stay positive despite the fact that the world is positively shit, and we still have to live through it anyways. That’s what it means to be a pureblooded wizard with snakes in your family.” or he’d know, if he stopped playing this game as if the green on his robes were somehow of a better cut than her own… but she got where he was coming from, the American accent, the strenuous desire to keep the Slytherins at arms length. Knowing that the school saw his colours and painted a picture before he’d ever opened his mouth, but he could do what he could on his own to reverse that, so long as nobody knew his last name and his family…
Looking down, she saw the ground in clearer vision, a smile on her face. “Do you think everyone just cares about your last name? I know your last name. And I haven’t asked you for shit, Jones. Maybe people look at you and just see you for you. And you’re the one fooling yourself in thinking it’s all about what comes down to a name. What’s the difference between that, and all the Mouldymort supporters from back when? Who thought it was alllllll about their names… and nothing mattered about how they acted. Look at them now.” left to pick at her leftover food, knowing that if he could do it, he would have. “If you wanted that with your heart, the Sorting Hat would have put you with them. But here you are, Jones. Again, with the denial.”
Words a little cold for someone who ate from his proverbial hand, munching on food delicately, even as she swung from her position with the recklessness of one who cared little for her life. But what did Toni have to live for, anyways? A question for a different day. The request from his lips stumbling, leaving a faded smile on her lips, throwing bones backwards, where the Owls began screeching, those free, bursting forwards to get at the scraps. “… maybe.” hating to even say it, leaving it vague as to what it was for, letting her arms grow rigid to hold her fast. “Summer’ll be lovely regardless. Make some money for the next year, maybe see the others. Can’t quite see my parents but that’s what happens when you get yourself thrown into Azkaban I suppose. No matter. I need to figure out what to do with my new pet cat, though. School’s great and all that but. Can be difficult. I guess worst case, if I can’t figure it out, I’ll spend the summer here and work on the cleaning staff through til the new year. Not the worst, not the best. How does one ‘care’ for an estate, anyways?”
Jughead listened carefully as he munched away on the turkey leg, separating meat from bone easily, eyes focused on nothing in particular out in the distance. Clouds slid over the mountains and into the valleys, illuminated by the silver glow of the moon and yet here they were, talking about names.
“You’re different,” he said quietly. She was one of the few that knew his name and didn’t try to use him for it or lump him in with some of the other wealthy Slytherin kids. He didn’t want that; to be put in the same group at those that looked down on their poorer classmates and made their lives hell. He hadn’t been raised that way. Living with his mother had been comfortable but he had no idea the wealth of his father until... until she passed away and he and his sister moved to England to live with him.
She was right about the sorting hat. About denial and even though he could admit it to himself, he couldn’t speak it. Her words cut him deep but hadn’t he known that when he spoke to her? She wasn’t going to lie to him or to say anything he didn’t need to hear. The only question he could ask was for himself; why Slytherin? Had he really wanted it deep down? He wasn’t sure.
The turkey leg in his hand suddenly lost it’s flavor and he grimaced at it before tossing the remnants to the owls. “I have to make sure everyone is doing their jobs, fill in for anyone who’s sick, and get people paid,” he said. “It’s a dawn to dusk thing and it’ll be my first go at it so maybe I won’t screw up and burn the house down,” he chuckled. “It’ll be a lot different than last summer. My sister and I spent summer at a lake with our mom. She had business there so we were left to our own devices most of the time.”
Jug cleared his throat and turned his attention back to her. “You don’t have to work with the horses if you don’t want,” he shrugged. “But if you can’t find something else, give it a thought?”

the milksop of his response leaves her disappointed. the bond that started solidifying from the things they have in common but don’t dare speak about to others. that time they kissed and it had her soaring. maybe, it was just meant to be that. she never had it easy when it came to people and everlasting association. she considers keeping whatever’s going on between them unwraps —- secret affairs behind curtains and closed doors. continue doing what they do. suspended in it. but she’s not sure she can handle that. what she crushes, she crushes and crashes hard. he sidesteps the conversation and swerves into something basic. she doesn’t appreciate it. ❝i don’t think you know what i want. and i think you’re a coward.❞
A coward? That froze him in his tracks, his grin fading slowly as he considered her accusation and it became increasingly obvious that she was right. He had been a coward, avoiding her at times because he had no idea how to respond to her. If there was one thing Jughead Jones hated, it was being called a coward but he knew deep down why he had done what he did. She was a flame that couldn’t be contained and he feared getting burned but at that moment... he had two choices. He could be water and snuff her out with silence. Or he could meet her with fire and together they might burn Riverdale to the ground and rise from the ashes. He hooked a hand behind her neck, curling his fingers and her auburn hair and kissed her, tasting the sweetness of her lips in a flash that took him back to Christmas, under the mistletoe where all of this started and where he shouldn’t have let it end.

He didn’t really have to REMIND her of that– it wasn’t about what she had but that was something he’d probably never be able to understand. She nodded in response instead of ARGUING, managing a small smile on her lips. At least he was trying to make her feel better. She chuckled softly, nodding her head in response. “As if that CROWN comes with any privilege apart from it being your little nickname,” she narrowed her gaze towards him. It meant a lot to her that he was TRYING to make her smile. “I’m fine, Jughead,” she assured him softly, shaking her head. “You don’t have to take care of me, you know.”
It was obvious that she didn’t seem reassured but he couldn’t blame her. At the end of the day there were from two different worlds and he understood that his words might not carry the same weight with her for that reason. But she was trying. She grinned, if even faintly. And she jabbed at him about his crown and he had to return the statement with a crooked grin of his own. “You wanna borrow it, princess?” he joked right back. “I know,” he shrugged, eyes dropping a little. When had be become so involved? Maybe it was once he had the responsibility of the Serpents... it involved him... and maybe she did too in some way. All of his friends did.
Holy crap...
I have so many half written drafts. I’ll see what I can do about getting them cleared out tomorrow!

Funny, how the smallest things could define the difference between manageable and painful summer for the both of them. Her breathing, soft, her head tilting just slightly with a grin on her face as her arms helped to suspend her within the water, swimming through the wallows of Sweetwater River, with a leisurely, near lazy pace. The unbearable itchiness that summer induced beneath her skin, now gone, even as she shivered at a wrecked pace, trying not to laugh when Jughead surfaced from below, splashing his face with more cold water, clear in the early season, making her un-stealthy getaway further within the centre of the water. Watching him cling to the dock and stare back at her with something unsaid.
Ah, with the secrets again.
“I don’t know if anybody gets it right away. The leadership thing, I mean. It’s about doing things okay and fucking up and learning to do better. Looking at others and wondering if you can guide them into being better people. Nobody’s perfect off the bat. It’s got weight to it, and that’s what makes it serious and all that, but like… you’re gonna be good. You’re gonna be bad at times. But how you choose to deal with the bad stuff, that’s what determines what kind of leader you’ll become. That’s character. That’s who you’re gonna grow to be.” Legs, wading through the water, kicking up gently so that she could float, instead, with a lightness that she’d never really feel, with a warmth that spread through her as the sun baked down upon her from above, and the water chilled her like ice from below. Wet hair, all around her, a floating pink halo, fingers tracing through the water…
Not looking at him but hearing him anyways, a softer hum on her lips, “It’s open! I mean, they usually kick up business there on May 20th when the weather starts to turn, Fangs did a summer there once even though it was far, think of it as like… the best summer we had in ages. Free ice cream? Snow cones? Forced AC? Seriously, I wish he’d work there every summer but the pay is shit, and it only really worked out until we were all able to get better paying jobs. But…. “ the nostalgic factor made her smile, but it was kind of nice to relive it all with Jones, looking at him from the corner of her eye. “You’re doing fine so far, you know.” wondering if it kept him up at night, and if he was getting what he needed out of this, too. Leadership wasn’t easy, and it hadn’t been for his father, either, nor for any of the younger Serpents when they’d been made to step up and play bigger parts than any of them had been ready for, and he’d been given the biggest role of them all. And from what she knew, he hated the spotlight, but made it all work, regardless. “Nobody feels you’re fucking up.
He wanted to tell her not to go too far, paranoid that their day of fun might be ruined by the rushing current but he said nothing. She was a big girl and he didn’t want to come off as the mom.
“I think you’d have made a good leader,” he said. Surely she would give him ‘the look’ but he didn’t care. He meant it. Since he was a kid there had been a disconnect between himself and the others in Sunnyside but she had known them always. She had stood by them and kept them in line in her own way before he even knew their names. Sometimes he wished he could admit that he wasn’t worthy of the position he held and it made him paranoid that the others didn’t see it either. How long before he was seen as weak? How long before the serpent reared it’s head to strike? It was becoming more and more clear that he had to speak to his father about his concerns, whether he wanted to or not.
She started talking about the snow cone place and he grinned. He may not have been there as a Southsider per say, but he did remember the nostalgia of when he and his family used to go when he was a kid. It seemed a different life. It was a different life. “They’d probably fire me if I tried,” he joked. Jughead Jones working around food was a disaster in the making. Just thinking about it was making him hungry. He kicked his legs out in front of him, the wood of the dock pinching his skin but he didn’t care. The sun danced on the current, sending shimmers of white light across his pale legs and it occurred to him that they rarely saw the light of day. “I should do this more. I’m a fucking ghost,” he laughed.
Hearing that he was doing alright for now brought his grin down a few notches to right above forced. It was nice to hear but he hated to think about how it might change. But at the end of the day if there was anyone he could trust with the truth, it was Toni. She had no problem letting him know when he’d fucked up and he appreciated it more than he could explain, even if she did cut him deep sometimes. “Yet,” he mumbled, glancing over at him. “So. As my right hand; what are some things you want to change around here?”
