Just walk? It sounds easy. Easier than she thought —- not that she spent hours pondering the afterlife when she was living. But she didn’t expect this. She thought endless darkness, terrific storms or powerful winds would stand between her and where she had to get to. She thought she’d be alone. But, a simple road and comforting arms have changed her perspective. Or at least until Death mentions leaving. “No—- what? No. But I can’t do this alone.” Lilli’s had to suffer dying, isn’t that enough? Apparently not. She stands to face Death, her whole body tensing. “You can’t go —- that’s not fair! Don’t leave me.”

Death's heart clenches, and she takes a step forward, wrapping her arms around Lilli and humming softly. "I'll a little of the way with you," she says, rubbing her back. It's always hardest to watch this, this slow decaying of will and happiness and the replacement of terror. It's not that bad, she wants to tell them, but they won't listen because they don't know what to expect. She pulls Lilli a little along the path, and supports her as they start walking. "You just keep walking and you get there, and I'll be there for a little while, but I can't go all the way."

[text] For someone that doesn't have to eat nor has any desire to, interesting is probably an understatement.

Victor’s breath caught in his chest at the feeling, unexpected, strange in its own right— and no one since Sherlock had touched, after all, or really seen. Eyes flicked open and he surveyed her in something close to shock, though it calmed when he realised who she was. Which was… illogical, really. It took a moment, but he finally spoke, a ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. “Shanghai, that one.”

Victor smiled, considering for a moment. He had choice, at least, though there were one or two that he’d like to leave for later. That was silly, he knew; he made a point not to mind his own scars. He reached out his right arm to her, turning it so she could see the burn scars along his forearm and back of his hand. “Explosion in Hong Kong. I was lucky, if I’m honest, that it wasn’t worse.”

Death has always been fascinated by scars, and it only was amplified the more she liked someone, and she liked Victor quite a bit. More than she should have, to be sure, but enough that she ran her fingers along the line. She could fix it for him. If she wanted to. If hewanted her to, but she liked him all marked up and used. Bodies weren't meant to go through life entirely unruined. She liked mapping his unruined-ness. "Beautiful," she breathed.

♛ — Of course she knows how it is, watching Death extend a hand to the man with just the faintest hint of pity. Not for where he will be going, no, but for all he’s leaving behind. Dies younger than he would have hoped, leaves behind a wife and a young child. But that’s how they all go, and how they will continue to go. It was like that before her existence, and during the glory days. Even now dying is something people fear, though they rarely have reason to.

“But I even gave him some flowers to cheer him up! Come on, Death. Those new deities never tell me anything, you know that. At least I knew back in the day people still believed in me.”

Death smiles at her, lifting the man onto his feet, and he's suddenly so surprised at the strength that he has for this when before he probably didn't even think he could stand. She smiles at her friend and picks up the flowers at well, giving them to the man.

"People have stopped believe in a lot of things, dear. I wouldn't get too upset. It's really personally, they just. Move on. We're nothing but little myths for them to play around with. It gets easier to live with, I promise."

The Two Specialists

Molly gaped at Death, watching her put the wounds back, precisely where Molly had catalogued them; the whole Death being personified would take quite a lot of getting used to. Molly’s gaze immediately softened as she looked towards Samantha. She felt a twinge of sorrow for her and she reached out to pat the girl’s hand, stopping herself abruptly before nodding to Death’s comment. “I understand,” she replied softly. “I mean, you probably know this, but Mum and Dad raised me Catholic. I don’t really deal with any of that stuff anymore, but I like to believe that there is a God out there somewhere, watching over me, protecting me, loving me because I-“

Molly’s voice broke off and she quickly rephrased the sentence, remedying it so that it would sound better than her original phrasing. “I mean taking care of me,” she fixed nervously. “You know, that sort of stuff.”

Molly shrugged, finding herself smiling back up at Death, enjoying how the woman’s eyes crinkled, her face slightly aged (not old looking though, just a quiet, restful peacefulness that usually surrounded the elderly). Molly took the scalpel from her, hesitating slightly, but quickly recovering. “Yes, I have,” Molly smiled. “But I still have yet to get to the abdomen, including the stomach, the gall bladder, the liver, the small intestine, the large intestine, the spleen, kidneys and the pancreas.”

Death nodded as Molly talked, and thought that maybe all humans weren't so bad--weren't so vile. She couldn't ever picture Molly doing anything cruel, or hurting anyone because it suited her fancy. She imagined the young girl had been hurt a few times in her life, being so kind and idealistic. It was a rough world to live in, and Death couldn't help much--not the way Molly wanted anyway, but she could try to provide just a few minutes of comfort before she had to go away again.

"There are people taking care of you, don't worry," Death smiled, moving things around to get ready for the next part of the autopsy. She'd never done one of these herself, but of course she knew how they worked; she knew everything there was about the process of dying. "Tell me how I can help," she said.

Sally didn’t actually know where to start. She called in the spur of a moment, driven by her own curiosity. "Yes, I am." She simply said and listened. To Death’s voice, her words, not aware of the irony that lay behind this simple action. "I… I think I never had an existential crisis. Not a major one." Of course not, because Sally used to push those away, expel, exclude and abandon them. She was afraid of letting it sink in, letting it all get too close. Once she’d do that, she would be lost. Lost in herself and lost for the job. It was something she involuntarily shared with the infamous Sherlock Holmes although their reasons might be different. Under the bottom line it remained a ‘Don’t get attached’. "This sort of sounds odd now, but I’d like to get to know you." she said after another moment of silent. It didn’t sound that odd. People use to get to know people. There had been for sure situations and starting points even weirder than Gothgirl appearing at a closed crime scene and leaving a phone number with one of the detectives. Hadn’t there been?

"Oh?" Death smiled, scuffing her heels along the sidewalk. She'd expected this, but perhaps not so soon. Those words always made her happy, even if they weren't meant the way she might have wanted them to be. Sally, of course, naturally, understandably, didn't mean that she wanted to get to know Death because she was cool or she wanted to be friends. She wanted to work out the mystery, and Death was used to that to a point where it didn't really bother her anymore. She was a mystery, yes. Not a woman. Not a human. Sometimes she forgot that, sometimes she looked forward to that one day where she could be.

She grinned into the phone and sighed. "Well, I'm on my way to a coffee shop now, or I wasn't a minute ago. But I am now. We could meet there. Or you could go home, research me like you're likely to do in these kinds of situations, find nothing, or find something--now wouldn't that be interesting? And then we could meet. It's really up to you."

Victor kissed him back gently, and carefully, as if one wrong move would break everything— break himself and break Sherlock, cause the walls to come crashing down around him once more. He knew that they would, when this dream was over; he would be back in a reality where there was no Sherlock, there was no comfort, there was no soft press of lips against his own or the feeling of this wonderful man in his arms. So much could have been done differently and he knew it, and hated it in the same moment. It could have been so different and yet he was not allowed that future, that might not have hurt him so much, that might have made it all just the smallest bit better.

He pulled away, eventually, and rested his forehead back against Sherlock’s, biting down on his lip hard. It wasn’t enough to stop the words that slipped by, that were unfair and selfish. “Please don’t leave me.”

Sherlock had never had his heart broken. He hadn't had the chance, dying first, and he doubted whether he really had a heart now. Except that he could feel the pain in his chest; maybe that was a mimic of Victor's pain, but it would be worse. He tightened his grip around Sherlock, even as he felt the walls of their precarious tremble around them. They didn't have long left, and he could see Death smiling sadly at them from a corner. "I will never leave you," Sherlock promised, and unhooked the scarf from his neck to wrap it around Victor's. "But I have to go now. I'll always be with you, don't you ever doubt that. At any given my moment, I am with you and watching you. God knows I annoy them all when I have to come over fifteen times a day and tell them about all the wonderful things you've accomplished." He paused, kissing the side of Victor's nose. "Promise me that you won't rot away, Victor. You're going to wake up soon, and I won't be with you. I will allow you precisely one day of eating ice cream in bed, and I'll make sure Death stays with you, and then I want you to get up and remember how young you are. I want you to have the happy life we could never, okay? For me. Please."

Poor Lilli. She wants to yes it’s bad, it’s horrible. But the truth is, she’s never felt more calm nor more at peace and she reaches out for Death’s hand like she’s an old friend. One she’s known for a lifetime and not moments. Now, she wants to look down. It’s like someone handing her a big red button and telling her not to push it. The temptation. Because she can see it —- out of the corner of her eye, there’s her body. But she keeps from looking to it. “What now?”

Death smiles, amazed at how wonderful she's doing. They all panic at some point or another, in varying degrees and for different amounts of time, but it happens, and then it fades. Death slips an arm around Lilli's shoulders, shiedling the body, and guides her along a dirt road that didn't exist before. "Now we walk," she hums. She knows where to take her, and she knows that it's going to take some getting used to, but she'll be happy. They always are eventually. "And then there will come a time when I'm not walking with you any more, but you keep going. You'll get where you have to go, I promise."
