Once in a while I have to do a project to preserve my nerd cred, so here goes...

For years I was using an Apple Airport Extreme as the router here at Maison du Nerd, but I wondered if I could do better.

I decided to rebuild a 4U server case that I had lying around, so I started gathering some server-grade parts from eBay at the lowest price I could get to build a server to run VMWare ESXi and a few virtual machines.

Once I got that up and running, I built a virtual machine running pfSense and had it take over my firewall and router duties, as well as allowing me to VPN into my home network anytime from anywhere.

Anyways, on a whim, I decided to run a speed test to see if it made a difference, and I get 241Mbps download. Holy moly, the best I ever got on the old setup was 33Mbps.

So, maybe I’m getting a little more value from the crazy amount I pay to [insert large, expensive cable provider here] but even better, I feel more nerdy, cuz at my age, and lack of pulchritude, I’ll take all the nerdiness I can get.
