Authorâs Note: This is based on the movie but Iâm almost finished with the book so there are nods to the book in here. Itâs been a HOT minute since Iâve written x reader fics⊠Going back to my roots. Iâm trying Angst no comfort for THE first time. Iâm a sucker for comfort so here's to trying something new! If you guys like this let me know and Iâll write more! who are we kidding Iâll write more even if you donât ask.
The rain comes down in short bursts, the sun blushing behind a group of thunder clouds. Ryland your husband goes into work the day of the launch of the Hail Mary. Heâs worked so hard for these three astronauts to go save the world and die doing it. Itâs not fair to their families⊠to themselves to ask them to give up so much. But the world is dying. That much is true. You canât help but feel grateful that your husband wonât be going up in that death machine.
The dimming sun starts to peek its head from the clouds and creates a beautiful rainbow in the sky. Your phone rings with âno caller IDâ. You know itâs Stratt. You pick up immediately, you know better than to keep that woman waiting.Â
âCome to say goodbye to your husband.âÂ
âWhat?â Your voice is almost gone before you even use it. Â
âNo time to explain, he will be departing on the hail mary in two hours if you want to see him.â Her voice shakes, something youâve never heard from her. Sheâs so composed, controlled and demure. Yet in this moment it feels like youâre speaking to a newborn fawn. Â
Confusion, fear and a knot the size of your fist sits in the pit of your stomach. You breathe through your mouth to keep from throwing up as you speed down the highway and make it to the base where your husband works. Security knows you well enough to let you in⊠You slap your visitorâs tag that reads your first and last name upside down but you couldnât give less of a hoot in this moment.Â
âRyâŠâ you spot him⊠wearing the dorky yellow rain coat you got him for his birthday. âTell me what's going onâŠâÂ
âThey want me to go into spaceâŠâ the silence that follows is deafening. Stratt pours you a drink, you put up a shaking hand declining. It took you an hour to get here and who knows how long before the love of your life is ripped away from you.Â
âBut youâre not an astronaut⊠you teach middle school science.â Your hands run through his hair thatâs slightly disheveled already.
âThatâs what I keep telling them! I canât even moon walk⊠I know nothing!â His eyes are red and puffy. The surface glossy from the tears that won't fall.Â
âYouâre trained in the mission. Thatâs all that matters.â Strattâs breath feels hollow. Is she⊠struggling with this?
You turn to Ryland and know heâs been fighting this with everything he has. You see it in the red rims of his eyes that heâs been crying, but by the looks of it Strattâs made up her mind. When that woman wants something all she has to do is snap her fingers and the world rearranges.Â
âSoâŠWhat⊠youâll just drag him kicking and screaming onto the spaceship?â you ask finally finding your voice, Stratt seems to have considered this and doesnât miss a beat.Â
âHeâll be sedated and if necessary we will induce the coma early. Yes.â her voice is calm, neutral⊠It shakes you to your core.Â
âThere have to be laws against this.â You argue.Â
âThere arenât actually⊠Your husband works for me. I have global immunity and Iâve asked him to do this for me. He will be remembered as a hero.âÂ
âThen let me go too⊠There are studies that showââÂ
âNo!â Both Ryland and Stratt shake their heads in unison. It was a long shot to ask⊠Youâre not trained in the mission let alone any science that is necessary for the journey. But you canât bear the thought of Ryland, your Ryland being alone lightyears away from you.Â
âThen give me five minutes with him⊠please.âÂ
âThree.â Stratt perches her lips and leaves the room giving you the illusion of privacy as she lingers nearby with the doctors and security.Â
Three precious minutes with your husband left.
âDonât say anything just⊠let me hold you. Let me memorize you.â he says, pulling you into his arms. He maps out your body. Not in a sexual way, but to put the image of you in his mind, to remember the shape of your edges, the smell of your shampoo. You canât speak even if you tried, the pressure in your throat is hot and tight as tears threaten to spill.Â
âRyland. I love you.â you whisper, your hands scrunching the rubber of his raincoat. Nails digging to find any surface to cling to.Â
âI love you more.â Usually, this playful banter would go on for about five minutes until you came to the âscientific conclusionâ that love canât be measured that way and you love each other too much for any scale⊠but you let him win this time. Just this once.Â
He cups your face gently, searching your eyes for youâre not sure what, until he finds it and leans in gently to kiss you. This is the last kiss youâll ever share with your husband. Tears pool your eyes as they fall and land between you both, the kiss rolling like a wave in the ocean as it deepens. Itâs somber but full of love and tenderness. You part only to take a shaky intake of air whenâŠ
The door swings open with an ear-splitting creak that shatters the moment between you both. Stratt standing to the side to let the doctor with the sedative through the door.Â
âAlright⊠Itâs time Dr. Grace.âÂ
What happens next you arenât prepared for. You watch helplessly as your husband takes your hand and runs.
âDonât make this harder than it has to be!â
You both run through the office building, down the corridors and through the fields leading to a tall barbed wire fence. To your horror Ryland starts to climb, his converses on the freshly rained on metal makes him slip every few inches. He holds his hand out to you offering to get you up with him.Â
As you start climbing the fence the guards catch up to you and you give Ryland a boost up but itâs no use, the two of you fall into the muddy soil hands still locked together.Â
âFudge.â Ryland mumbles. Even now Ryland decides not to curse when all you want to do is scream at the top of your lungs.Â
The guards hold Ryland down as he starts crying. You sob as youâre also held back from interfering. Watching him get tackled and sedated leaves a hole in your soul and bile in your throat.
âNO! Please, theyâre my partner. I can't leave them.â he cries. Youâve never seen him so broken, so scared. Youâd give anything to go with him⊠or trade places with him. But this is it.Â
âDonât do it⊠DonâtâŠâ Rylandâs sobs of protest ring in your ears as silence follows. You watch as the last thing Ryland sees and hears is you crying before heâs forced into unconsciousness.
Youâre brought back into the building and a blanket is offered to you as you sit in Strattâs office. Oh how you have some choice words for that woman⊠But you have no fight left in you. Mud on your knees and palms as you sit silently in the office. Stratt across from you ushering the drink towards you again. You take a sip.Â
Head in your hands, Carl enters the room silently. âHeâs ready⊠if you wanted to see him one last timeâŠâ You shoot to your feet pushing past Carl as you practically run to the coma room. Ilyukhina and YĂĄo are still awake as they prepare for the sedation themselves. The room is eerily calm.Â
You look down at Ryland already sedated with the tube down his throat. He looks like heâs peacefully sleeping, and you tell yourself he is despite knowing better.Â
âWhere are his glasses? He canât do the mission without his glasses⊠He has awful eyesightâŠâ You start to tear up as Carl gently holds up Rylandâs glasses from the pack of his things.Â
âWeâll make sure heâs in good hands.â YĂĄo smiles sadly. You nod, thanking him.Â
âAnd⊠Are there any photos of me in there? I donât want him to forget who I am⊠even if⊠IâŠâ You struggle to get the words out. âEven if I never see him againâŠâ Carl nods as Ilyukhina stands from her bed and gives you a gentle hug. You welcome the hug graciously despite wanting to embrace Ryland.Â
Carl pulls out several photos of you and Ryland together, some hugging, others kissing and one from your wedding day.Â
âWe pulled these from his phone, and computer.â Carl says placing the photo album gently on top of all of Graceâs things.Â
âThank you CarlâŠâ you let go of Ilyukhina, letting them all ready themselves for the launch of the Hail Mary.Â
You donât move as you witness it take off. Even long after the line of astrophage disperses and the sky is the same golden hue of orange it was on your wedding night, you stand and stare in the spot you last held your husbandâs hand.Â
The âfuneralâ for the three astronauts is a small gathering. Stratt only wanted the closest and immediate family to attend. You stand for Grace alone. The group of people for YĂĄo Li-Jie and Olesya Ilyukhina only made you feel even more isolated. In lew of burying their bodies, you bury items, some flowers, copies of your wedding photos, and items that are inside jokes between you and him⊠Youâre about to leave the burial site when you see a parade of cars pull up.
A flood of middle school age students rush towards you. Some highschoolers and even older than that⊠All Rylandâs students at one point or another. Youâve been in your husbandâs classroom as a guest teacher before, youâve seen some of these faces. Youâre overwhelmed with love and appreciation from both students and parents alike, many giving you casseroles and cards of all sorts. Hand drawn pictures and gifts that make today a little more bearable. Tears prick your eyes at seeing how truly loved your husband really is
Soon the day comes to get Rylandâs things from the school. Clearing out his classroom almost breaks you. Youâre unable to do it alone and ask for your friends to help. You bring his books, pictures and personal items home, packed in the back of your car. You almost donât want to touch any of it. What if by some miracle he comes back and wants it all the way it was? But you canât think that way. Not really. Even if the mission is a success thereâs no way of him coming back.Â
A suicide mission one way to another solar system isnât something one comes back from; thereâs not exactly a therapy group for people whose husbands were shot up into space forever without their consent. So you find the next best thing, grief counseling. But the years start to mix and meld together in a fuzzy cocktail of grief and trying to live a life in the new reality of earth.Â
Year 1: Slowly but surely you start to heal⊠Start to move on. You go to meetings and talk about Ryland⊠People are either confused, grateful or some mix of the two. You donât blame them. Itâs a lot to try and process. Â
Year 2: While shopping for your weekly groceries you stumble across his favorite cereal⊠It's nothing special, but it brings back a flood of memories you werenât ready to dissect on a random Thursday. Nothing huge, just domestic moments with the love of your life. Moments shared that youâll never get backâŠÂ
Year 3: You finally take off your wedding ring and wear it around your neck.Â
Year 5: Youâre just trying your best⊠you give dating a try⊠the world continues getting colder.
Year 7: Stale dates, mediocre sex⊠No one knows you like he did. But you settle. The world is ending after all. You meet Greg. Heâs kinda okay.
Year 10: Wedding⊠Honeymoon⊠Planned and preciseâŠ
Year 12: Fired from your job, moving across the country, chaos.Â
Year 14: Unexpected kid⊠foreclosure, moving back.Â
Year 17: Three year old, messy hands, messy life⊠Divorce.Â
Year 19: Single parent, five year old⊠two jobs and sore feet.Â
Year 20: Return of the Hail Mary.
When the news of the Hail Mary returning comes to you your legs almost give out. The wedding ring you still wear around your neck feels heavy. You donât even know if he survived. How the ship got home you have no idea. If you knew it was happening you would have gone to the landing⊠But here you are reheating leftovers for your kid watching it on the TV.Â
The exhaustion almost takes hold but then you see him on your screen. Heâs just as young as he was the day he left. Screw relativity and however it works⊠Youâre older and wiser, grey hairs highlighting your locks and smile lines across your face and he looks the same as that day he was dragged away from you in the mud.Â
Does he even want to see you? You have no idea but you have to see him⊠Itâs a need not a want. Youâve spent years mourning a man you thought youâd never see again only for him to come right back to earth and you donât even know if he wants to see you. He wouldnât be here if he didnât want to see you, right? But youâre old, grey, divorced with a kidâŠÂ
Your thoughts come to a screeching halt as a car pulls up to your house. It feels surreal. The door opens, and out he comes, wearing his goofy smile, hair a mess and glasses askew⊠Your perfect beautiful husband Ryland.Â
You go to speak but nothing comes to the surface as you brace yourself against the doorframe practically sinking to your knees.Â
âMy love!â Ryland races towards you as best he can with his cane in hand. It must be from the gravity of Earth after being in space for so long⊠Or something like that, heâs still young, still the same, yet he carries himself with a new confidence that wasnât there before.Â
âItâs you.â you stammer softly, tears streaming down your red hot cheeks. You know for a fact youâre ugly crying right now but you donât care.Â
âItâs me.â he says gently cupping your face, as if testing to see if youâre really there. You canât help but do the same as heâs been dead to the world for two decades.Â
âRy, Iâm not the same person you knewâŠâ you say softly, as your five year old pitter patters up to you and hugs your leg. You look down at them and smile sadly. A whole life you planned with Ryland beneath you clinging to your legs like a koala and they donât have an ounce of Ryland in their DNA.Â
âI know, Iâm not the same either, but⊠maybe we can learn who weâve become? Together?âÂ
You canât help but smile. Heâs so willing to try and make it all work.Â
âI want to learn who this snuggle bug is, I want to relearn my partner, I want to try again.â He says tears rimming his eyes.Â
âThen weâll try.â You say cupping his face in your hands and gently coaxing a kiss, and oh how the fireworks fly just as they did 20 years ago.
