Ya know, my older mother has a Masters degree and about 1/3 of her Phd studies done. She does not watch Fox News or much news media at all beyond the 6 o’clock local broadcast. After the election, while we were watching the news and she was going on and on about how glad she was to see a lovely first lady with class, who knew her place, in the White House, I objected. And she literally started crying and told me that she wishes that she had never wasted her money sending me to college just so I could be turned into a hateful liberal.I told her that I remember her telling me about the race riots in Detroit in the 60′s and about how there was a tank parked in her front yard and about how that should never happen again. I told her that Pete Seeger and Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary wanted their albums back because if she couldn’t listen to what they were saying anymore, she shouldn’t listen to them at all. She told me to leave her house until I could be civil and not twist people words.
It’s not just a lack of education or a stereotypical redneck upbringing and lifestyle that causes people to not only tolerate, but defend “conservative” movements and politicians right now. My mother is just an example of a major cognitive shift that happened to much of her generation. Something happened to these Free Love wanting, Earth Day celebrating, Civil Rights marchers and it terrified them into the arms of hate and greed. It scares me because I’ve been alive for awhile too and I can’t for the life of me, figure out what happened. We need to make sure it doesn’t happen to us.
It’s not as simple as Trump voter and teabagger stereotypes, as we have found out, almost anyone can put on a MAGA hat if they are afraid enough.
